Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of Industrial Management The writer has long felt the need of a scientific treatment of industrial management. Hundreds of young men are now in our schools and colleges intending to engage in the world of affairs, and it is exceedingly important that they gain a clear conception of the principles underlying the successful conduct of industrial enterprises. The material in this book is gathered from many sources. Merely to mention the people to whom the author is indebted for data within these covers would fill several pages with names. The writer has endeavored to give full credit in the text for the drawings, plates, and diagrams, and, unless accidentally overlooked, all books and articles from which he has received assistance have been cited. In the text, however, there is no mention of his obligations to Judge Elbert H.Gary and Mr. Richard Trimble, of the United States Steel Corporation, to Mr. Wm. Laughlin, of Armour and Company, Mr. H. C. Folger, Jr., of the Standard Oil Company, Mr. E.Collins, Jr., of the Sauquoit Silk Manufacturing Company, Mr. L.A. Osborne, Vice-President of the Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Company, and Mr. H. E. Neise, of the American Sugar Refining Company; so he takes this opportunity to thank them for their many favors. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Industrial Management What does the manger of an enterprise do? Chiefly he makes decisions. Then he may or may not see to their carrying out. Others may do this for him, but they cannot make the big decisions for him. How does a man learn how to do this deciding? Chiefly by experience, which is the great and the expensive teacher of men in worldly things. It is possible, however, that a man may acquire experience much faster if he knows the principles that underlie his work. With the object of training young men in the principles that underlie the problems that face the works manager, the Wharton School of Finance and Commerce in the University of Pennsylvania has for some years been giving a course called Industrial Management. This book has grown out of that course, and it is being published in the hope that it may be of benefit to young men who are at work and have not the prospect of attending this kind of a college. I wish to express my appreciation of the kindness rendered by Dr. F. W. Van Meter in reading the manuscript and making editorial changes and suggestions. Book Principles of Industrial Organization Classic Reprint

Download or read book Principles of Industrial Organization Classic Reprint written by Dexter S. Kimball and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Industrial Organization As industrial enterprises have grown in magnitude, as processes have become more refined and competition more keen the problems of organization have steadily grown m importance. Just as the tools and processes of our forefathers became inadequate as enterprises grew in magnitude so the simple administrative methods formerly m use have long since been outgrown by modem plants. Aside, however, from these reasons there are other factors affecting organization, which, while of little importance in former times, promise to be of great importance in the organizations of the future. The ideals that man has held before him in his toilsome journey from savagery to civilization have varied with changing time and place. Among many of the older nations war was the central thought, the country was an armed camp and predatory methods were an approved means of national support. In other cases some form of religion was the predominating influence, and the social and industrial organization was modelled accordingly. In a few of the older civilizations industry was held in high esteem; but for the most part it was considered menial to labor and industry was adjudged by standards that now seem strange indeed. But as the humanistic side of civilization has made progress we have attained higher ideals regarding industry. Never before in the history' of mankind has it been so universally acknowledged that physical, mental and moral well-being rest upon and are solely supported by labor. Industry is the business of the civilized world, and the greater part of our problems, national, state and home, center around the great industrial questions. Furthermore, industry is being looked upon more and more, not as an incidental matter, nor merely as a means of securing personal profits, but as the great basic feature of our civilization on which must rest our entire well-being. And with this new evaluation of industry has come new and higher ideals regarding service to humanity. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Administration of Industrial Enterprises

Download or read book The Administration of Industrial Enterprises written by Edward David Jones and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Administration of Industrial Enterprises: With Special Reference, to Factory Practice In discussing physical equipment it has been necessary to skirt the borders of a vast field of technical knowledge, choos ing such matter as the general executive should possess in his attempt to supervise the work of technical experts. With reference to administrative organization, the aim has been to bring the contributions of scientific management into relation with the general body of underlying principles of administration which are valid for all forms of joint action; and to do SO by sketching the evolution Of administrative practice rather than by a systematic review of pure principles. The relations of labor and capital have been handled with two leading purposes in mind, namely, to present the labor problem from the viewpoint of the employing manager and, second, to elaborate somewhat the meaning of the new philanthropy which aims to bring to the less favored classes a fuller measure of the rational Objects of life, through the organized and normal processes of industry, rather than through extra-economic alleviative agencies. Book Industrial Organization

Download or read book Industrial Organization written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Industrial Organization: Factory Management, Problems of Plant and Equipment, Wage Payment Plans, Production and Inspection First of all, efficiency is not strenuousness. The man who hustles may or may not be efficient; probably he is not. Hustling is not a normal element in efficiency, nor is strenuous work apt to be efficient just because it is strenuous. You work at a lathe with the castings you are finishing piled ten feet away. This means strenuous, but not efficient, labor. To work at that same lathe with the castings piled so near that you can get them without moving from your place is less strenuous, but far more efficient labor. We are familiar with the fact that an overloaded machine leads a strenuous life. None of us will, if we understand mechanics, say that it is an efficient life. This is true of men as well as of machines; true of us as well as of our employees. We must get rid of the idea that strenuousness and efficiency are either similar or the same. Driving is one thing; efficiency is something else. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
