Book Modern Electricity and Magnetism Theoretically and Practically Considered

Download or read book Modern Electricity and Magnetism Theoretically and Practically Considered written by Elroy M. Avery and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-19 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Electricity and Magnetism, Theoretically and Practically Considered: Being the Chapter on Electricity, From the Elements of Natural Philosophy The rate of doing work is called power. A horse power represents the ability to perform 550 foot-pounds in a second or foot-pounds in a minute. 1t equals about 746 X ergs per second. Energy is the power of doing work. A mass of matter in motion is able to overcome resistance, or to do work, by virtue of its weight and velocity. Energy of motion, like that of a falling hammer, or of owing Water, is called kinetic energy. But matter often has a supply of possible energy by virtue of a position of advantage. Thus a bent bow, the raised weights of a clock or the water in a high reservoir, has a power of doing work by reason of its position alone. Such energy is called potential energy. It is evident that potential energy is easily converted into kinetic energy and vice versa. Both of these kinds of energy may pertain to masses of matter, as in the illustrations just given, or to the molecules of matter. The energy of vibrating molecules (molecular kinetic energy) does the work of the steam engine and in the case of the expansion of metals by heat, is practi cally irresistible. We shall have much to do with molec ular energy in the following pages. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Electricity and Magnetism: A Text-Book for Colleges, and Technical Schools Energy must be supplied to an electric generator (chemical energy in the case of a battery, mechanical energy in the case of a dynamo), and this energy reappears in various parts of the electric circuit through which the current flows. Thus, energy reappears as heat in an electric lamp and as mechanical work in an electric motor. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Electricity Magnetism for Beginners Classic Reprint written by F. W. Sanderson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Electricity Magnetism for Beginners The following lessons in Electricity are intended to form a first course for boys who have already learnt the elements Of mensuration, statics, dynamics, and heat. As the Object Of the book is to introduce the student to the principal laws Of the subject, and to give him a working knowledge of the quantities involved, I have thought it well, at this stage, to introduce only direct experiments. It will be advisable to omit the last three sections Of the chapter on magnetism until the second and third chapters have been studied. The apparatus required for the experiments is described in the text, or is made clear by the diagrams. This apparatus is of the simplest character, and can be provided at a very small cost for classes Of as many as thirty to work the same experiment at the same time. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Theoretical Elements of Electro-Dynamic Machinery, Vol. 1 This volume is a collection of a series of articles recently published in the "Electrical Engineer" of New York. The writer's desire and intention has been to develop for students of electrical engineering the applied or arithmetical theory of electro-magnetism, as distinguished from the purely mathematical theory of this great and important subject. The groundwork only can be said to have been completed within the limits of these covers. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Elementary Lessons in Electricity and Magnetism Classic Reprint written by Silvanus Phillips Thompson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-21 with total page 554 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Lessons in Electricity and Magnetism These Lessons in Electricity and Magnetism are in tended to afford to beginners a clear and accurate knowledge of the experiments upon which the Sciences of Electricity and Magnetism are based, and of the exact laws which have been thereby discovered. The difficulties which beginners find in studying many modern text-books arise partly from the very wide range of the subject, and partly from want of famili arity with the simple fundamental experiments. We have, at the outset, three distinct sets of phenomena to observe, viz. - those of Frictional Electricity, of Current Electricity, and of Magnetism; and yet it is impossible to study any one of these rightly without knowing something of them all. Accordingly, the first three Chapters of this work are devoted to a simple exposition of the prominent experimental facts of these three branches of the subject, reserving until the later Chapters the points of connection between them, and such parts of electrical theory as are admissible in a strictly elementary work. N o knowledge of algebra beyond simple equations, or of geometry beyond the first book of Euclid, is assumed. Book Senior Magnetism and Electricity Classic Reprint

Download or read book Senior Magnetism and Electricity Classic Reprint written by R. H. Jude and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Senior Magnetism and Electricity The object of this book is to provide a sound course of Elementary Magnetism and Electricity, suitable for use in schools and colleges, containing a lucid account of the theory illustrated by a large collection of simple and instructive experiments. Modern ideas on the nature of electricity have received full attention, so far as this is consistent with a strictly elementary treatment of the subject. Part I. deals with Magnetism, a subject which is much better fitted for easy experimental work than Electrostatics. For example, the Law of Inverse Squares, and the conception of Lines of Force are far easier to demonstrate by practical methods in Magnetism than in Electricity. In Part II. - Electrostatics - the conception of Potential is introduced very early, is illustrated practically by means of the gold-leaf electroscope, and is then made the foundation of the whole subject. Numerous diagrams of lines of force and equipotential surfaces are given, in order to impress on the student the importance of the medium surrounding the "charged" bodies. Part III. - Electrodynamics - opens with a simple treatment of the general principles, which are then treated in detail in the later chapters. The account of the theory of voltaic cells, though strictly elementary, is quite up to date. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Electricity and Magnetism Classic Reprint written by Selimo Romeo Bottone and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-13 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Electricity and Magnetism HE object of the following pages is to present an easy and attractive introduction to the sciences of Electricity and Magnetism. The work is not intended as a text-book; hence no recondite calculations, and no mere enumeration of all the existing electro-magnetic appliances are introduced. Care has been taken to im part exact knowledge, that will not have to be unlearnt, in a readable form. The two old theories are sufiiciently dwelt upon to enable the reader to form an intelligent conception of them, while very special stress has been laid upon the modern, and more satisfactory, mole cular theory. Many instruments are described and figured; very many more are left entirely unnoticed, such as the accumulator, etc., since these can be per fectly understood from a perusal of this work, after re ference to more technical works written by the Author. Enough, however, has been done, without increasing the dimensions of the work beyond the limits prescribed, to. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Electricity and Magnetism At the same time the changes in the modern conception of electrical action demand more recognition than has been given them. Since the student must necessarily form some definite idea as to how such actions take place, it is important that these ideas should be, from the very first, in accordance with the best theories. No subsequent effort can take the place of correct initial conceptions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
