Book The Elements of Conchology Or Natural History of Shells

Download or read book The Elements of Conchology Or Natural History of Shells written by Thomas Brown and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Conchology, or Natural History of Shells: According to the Linnean System; With Observations on Modern Arrangements The intention of the following works is to lay before the student, in the simplest style, the Linnean arrangement of shells. The author teas induced to undertake this simple work, because there was no elementary book on shells in the English language, with the exception of Da Casta's, whose arrangement is now generally exploded. The work now presented to the public is strictly according to the Linnean System. Several attempts have been made, to overturn the Linnean arrangement of shells, but without effect. And with all its pretended faults no one has been able to supercede it, by a better system. That it is not so complete as the other departments, most people are ready to allow; but its beauties must perpetuate its pre-eminence. In describing the genera, the author has also pointed out the different alterations of modern arrangements, (particularly that of Lamarck;) and the new genera which they have formed. And it has been his object to illustrate the work, as far as it was possible, by figures of British shells; which will facilitate the study of British Testaceology, and prove equally useful to the study of General Conchology. Book Elements of Conchology Vol 1 of 2

Download or read book Elements of Conchology Vol 1 of 2 written by Lovell Reeve and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-03 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Conchology, Vol. 1 of 2: An Introduction to the Natural History of Shells and of the Animals Which Form Them Edward forbes, in his delightful Natural History of the Euro pean Seas, ' remarks that in this age of volumes, a man had needs offer a good excuse before adding a new book, even though it be a small one, to the heap already accumulated. He should either have something fresh to say, or be able to tell that which is old in a new and pleasanter way. The imperfect knowledge which Conchologists have of the natural history of their Shells would seem to argue that there is yet room for something to be said in reference to the objects of their admiration; and if I have not much to say in the following pages that is fresh, I have, at least, done my best to tell what is in them in a pleasant way. To guide the collector in arranging his specimens, I submit a classification, on the Lamarckian system, of the genera, each with its list of species; and to lead him to meditate, whilst pondering over the treasures of his cabinet, upon the too little remembered fact of their once living existence, a description is given of the structural peculiarities and habits of the animals. For figures of shells, with the live mollusk, I have resorted chie y to the zoologies of exploring expeditions, published under the auspices of the French Government. The figure of s'mla is, however, an original one, from a specimen captured at Port Nicholson, New Zealand, by Mr. Percy Earl; and so also are those ofvi preface.
