Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Botany As this book originally appeared, the description Of the germination Of the bean contained a blunder which is now set right. I am indebted to Mr Heber Smith1 for pointing out that the part played by the micropyle, in the emergence Of the radicle, is Often wrongly given. I regret that I have not room in the text for a fuller account Of the process such as is supplied by Mr Heber Smith's letter. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Botany It will be found that this book differs from most American text-books designed for use in secondary schools, in endeavor ing to combine in one volume the simplest possible directions for laboratory work with an outline of vegetable anatomy and physiology, and a brief statement of the principles of botani cal classification. An account of the functions of the tissues or organs described usually follows as closely as may be the account of the parts in question. The attempt is made to disciiss' plants dynamically rather than statically, to view them as contestants in the struggle for existence, and to con sider some of the conditions of success and failure in the vegetable world. While the determination of species by means of an artifical key is illustrated, preparation for this process is by no means the main object or even a principal end which the author has had in view. The tendency of botany-teaching seems to be more and more away from the old ideal of enabling one's pupils to run down a species as expeditiously as possible, and teaching them how to preserve a properly ticketed memento of the chase. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Essentials of Botany In the use of this book I must urge that it is intended to serve as a guide only to the teacher and student. The student must actually see as much as possible of what is here brought to his notice. The book simply marshals in logical order the objects to be studied. No doubt some thing may be learned by a simple consecutive reading of the paragraphs of the book, but the young botanist should not be content to obtain all his facts at second hand; he must see with his own eyes all that may be seen. Download or read book Elements of Botany Vol 1 of 2 written by Benjamin Smith Barton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-07-31 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Botany, Vol. 1 of 2: Or Outlines of the Natural History of Vegetables It'was with the view of contributing something to this desirable end, that I undertook the arduous task of composing these elements or botany: a task certainly arduous for one who is engaged in the prae. Tice of an anxious and di lclllt profession; occupied for near seven months of the year in the duties Of teaching in the University, and, withal, subject to repeated at tacks Of a violent and dangerous disease. The work is now presented to the public. I cannot but be some what solicitous about it: I cannot dismiss it with frigid tranquillity'r: but I will not tremble for its fate. Should the work confer no reputation upon me, I am still young enough to hope, that reputation may be Oh tained by future efforts. See Fragments of the Natural History of Pennsylvania. Part I. Int. P. Viii. 1' Dr. Johnson. I have divided this work into three parts. In the First Part, Ihave given a pretty extensive delinea' Tron or the plant, beginning with the root, and ending with the various organs of the fructification. The terminology, or nomenclature, of all these parts is amply detailed; indeed, I fear much more amply than may seem agreeable to some of my readers. But as one Of the great Objects of the botanist is the correct or discriminative description Of plants, and as such a de scription cannot be given Without the use Of an appro priate language (such as the modern botanical language, unquestionably, is), I shall offer no apology for my hav ing taken up so much time in the mere description of the various parts of the vegetable. If those, whose ob ject is a more superficial acquaintance'with the study of plants, should feel somewhat fatigued, in pursuing me through such a laboured range Of words, I am per suaded, on the other hand, that some of my readers will feel a regret, that this terminology is not still more extensive. Book A Text Book of Botany Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Text Book of Botany Classic Reprint written by EDUARD. STRASBURGER and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-09 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104-Book of Botany IT is customary to place all living beings in either the animal 01 vegetable kingdoms, but in reality a sharp boundary line between animals and plants first becomes possible when they exhibit a complicated structure. In those of more simple organisation all distinctions disappear, and it becomes difficult to define the exact limits of Botany and Zoology. This, in fact, could scarcely be otherwise, as all the processes of life, in both the animal and vegetable kingdoms, are dependent On the same substance, protoplasm. With more complicated organisation, the specific differences increase, and the characteristics distinguishing animal from vegetable life become more obvious. For the present, it must be confessed, the recognition Of an organism, as an animal or a plant, is dependent upon its corre spondence with an abstract idea of what a plant or animal Should be, .based on certain points of agreement between the members of each class. A satisfactory basis for the Separation of all living organisms into the categories of animals or plants can only be obtained when it is shown that all organisms distinguished as animals are in reality genetically connected, and that a similar connection exists between all plants. The proof of this can only be arrived at through the theory OF evolution. From the study of the fossil remains and impressions Of animals and plants, it has been established that in former epochs forms Of life. Differing from those of the present age existed on the earth. It is also generally assumed that all living animals and plants have been derived by gradual modification from previously existing forms. This leads to the further conclusion that those organisms possess ing closely Similar structure, which are united as species in a genus, are in reality related to one another. It is also probable that the union of corresponding genera into one familv and of families into higher groups serves to give expression to a real relationship existing between them. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Plant Anatomy This book contains the substance of the lectures given to the classes in the last half of the second year's course in botany, at Barnard College. The method followed in this course differs somewhat from that generally adopted in either home or foreign colleges. The study of botany, as a science, is comparatively new in this country, and therefore we have the advantage of the experience of Europe, where the science of botany has long held a place equal in rank with that of its related subjects. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Botany: Structural, Physiological, Systematical, and Medical The work now laid before the public is a fourth edition of the Author's Outline of the First Principles of Botany, much extended and, it is hoped, improved. That work was written for the use of students, and entirely for the purpose of enabling them to fix correctly in their minds the more important points which the teacher brings before them in an academical course. When facts are mixed up with extended discussions, and rapidly adverted to, either in a lecture-room or in a written dissertation, the beginner is apt to lose sight of the exact nature of an argument, and is unable to distinguish with certainty the points upon which it is most material for him to fix his attention. That there existed a want of such a work has been sufiiciently proved by the many editions the original Outline has passed through, in various European lan guages: indeed, while the present new edition is in the press, advice has been received of the translation of the work into Hungarian. The propositions which it contained were such as it is of the most indispensable importance for a student to understand; and were all, apparently, deducible from the evidence which had at that time been collected by Botanists. - The wish of the Author was to sketch a slight but accurate outline, the details of which were to be filled up by the reader himself, who, for this purpose, was referred to the Author's more extended Introductions to Botany.
