Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements Chemical Arithmetic: A Short System of Elementary Qualitative Analysis A mass of matter is any portion of matter appreciable by the senses. A molecule 18 the smallest particle of matter into which a body can be divided without losing its identity or it is the smallest portion of matter which can exist by itself. An atom is a still smaller particle produced by the division of a molecule; or it is the smallest portion of matter that can go into combination. Examples. The sun and a grain of sand are masses of matter. The smallest particle of salt which can exist and which exhibits the properties of salt is a molecule. The minute particles of chlorine and sodium which com pose the molecule Oi salt are atoms. A mass is made up of molecules, and a molecule is com posed of atoms. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Chemical Arithmetic: With a Short System of Elementary Qualitative Analysis This little manual is intended to supplement the teaching of the text-books of descriptive chemistry, and to be used as a companion to them, by those who desire to make the whole subject more practical. It is the result of the author's experience after several years of elementary science teaching. Part I. contains some of the more important rules and principles of chemical arithmetic, followed by a series of problems, which will not be found to be above the comprehension of the average student in the schools. The matter relating to chemical theory, and the rules, have been collected from the best authorities. Part II. is devoted to an elementary system of qualitative analysis, and the best methods have been adopted. This part of the book can be used separately, and can be taught together with any good work in descriptive chemistry, such as Eliot & Storer's, Shepard's, Remsen's, or Avery's Chemistry. This is an OCR edition with typos. Excerpt from book: This rule can be simply expressed by the general proportion: ? M: m:: W: w, where M represents the molecular weight of the substance given, m the molecular weight of the substance asked, W the real mass of the substance given, and w the real mass of the substance asked; whence w 45. The Relations of Weight to Volume. 1. To find the volume occupied by a given weight of any gas. Rule. Divide the weight of the gas given by the weight of 1 liter; the quotient is the number of liters. 2. To find the weight of any given volume of gas. Rule. Multiply the number of liters of gas by the weight of 1 liter; the product is the weight of the given volume. Examples. 1. What volume is occupied by 6.08 grams of oxygen, the weight of 1 liter of oxygen being 1.43 grams ? 6.08 -=- 1 .43 = 4.25 liters. Ans. . 2. What is the weight of 25 liters of nitrogen gas, 1 liter weighing 1.26 grams ? 1.26 x 25 = 31.5 grams. Ans. 46. Density of Gases. The density of any gas ex presses how many times the gas is heavier than hydrogen. Knowing the density, the weight of 1 liter may readily be obtained by multiplying it by the weight of 1 liter ofhydrogen, O.OS9G grams, or 1 erith. The molecular weight of any/substance being the weight of 2 volumes of the substance in the state of gas, it is evident that its density in the state of gas may be obtained by dividing its molecular weight by 2. With few exceptions, the density of any elementary gas is expressed by the same number as its atomic weight, and that of any compound gus is expressed by the same number as half its molecular weight. Thus, oxygen, O = 10; density, 16; or 1 liter weighs 16 criths. Ammonia, NH3 = 17; density, 8.5; or 1 liter weighs 8.5 criths. 47. Relation of Gaseous Volume to Pressure. To calculate the chang..

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chemical Arithmetic: With Twelve Hundred Examples The following numerical problems on the chief properties and reactions of the more important elements and inorganic compounds are intended to be used in conjunction with a descriptive text-book of chemistry. The beginner is supposed to be acquainted with elementary arithmetic. Those more advanced are strongly advised to learn the use of logarithms, when Tables VI. And VII. Will materially lighten the arithmetical labour. Those portions of the introduction, which may be omitted on a first perusal, and a few of the more difficult problems, are marked off by lines. For the sake of simplicity, and to avoid frequent changes, in many cases the numbers used are only approximate. More accurate data will be found in my Numerical Tables and Constants in Elementary Science. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Introduction to Chemistry

Download or read book Introduction to Chemistry written by Amos Turk and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-07-15 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction to Chemistry is a 26-chapter introductory textbook in general chemistry. This book deals first with the atoms and the arithmetic and energetics of their combination into molecules. The subsequent chapters consider the nature of the interactions among atoms or the so-called chemical bonding. This topic is followed by discussions on the nature of intermolecular forces and the states of matter. This text further explores the statistics and dynamics of chemistry, including the study of equilibrium and kinetics. Other chapters cover the aspects of ionic equilibrium, acids and bases, and galvanic cells. The concluding chapters focus on a descriptive study of chemistry, such as the representative and transition elements, organic and nuclear chemistry, metals, polymers, and biochemistry. Teachers and undergraduate chemistry students will find this book of great value.

Book A Guide to the Elements

Download or read book A Guide to the Elements written by Albert Stwertka and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Newly updated throughout, and now covering 118 elements, this crystal-clear guide to the periodic table illuminates the basic concepts of chemistry as it traces the history and development of our knowledge of the material world. In this fascinating volume, Albert Stwertka makes complex ideas and terms easily understandable, drawing upon engaging historical anecdotes and everyday examples to clarify the text, which is complemented by numerous illustrations, many in full color. Since the second edition, many new elements have been named and discovered, including Darmstadtium, Roentgenium, and Copernicium, and the elements currently called Ununtrium, Ununpentium, Ununhexium, Ununseptium, and Ununoctium. The third edition provides thorough coverage of all these new discoveries. In addition to the new elements, Stwertka has brought the information about the elements in the second edition up-to-date, based on the latest research. He discusses a cylindrical molecule of carbon known as a "nanotube," which has become a do-all wonder substance, touted for use in everything from X-ray machines to paint. A new form of the element boron has been found that is nearly as hard as diamond. Its superior heat resistance could make it attractive for certain industrial uses. And a new particle detector using ultra-pure liquid xenon has been constructed beneath 5,000 feet of rock in Italy to detect dark matter. Stwertka also covers the 2010 Nobel-winning work on graphene, an ultrathin form of carbon that is vital for future generations of computers and touch screens, the discovery of new superconductors, and the development of new uses for the rare earth elements. Bringing the periodic table into the 21st century, this engrossing guide to the elements will fascinate everyone curious about the basic building blocks of the material world.
