Book A Course in the Theory of Groups

Download or read book A Course in the Theory of Groups written by Derek J.S. Robinson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: " A group is defined by means of the laws of combinations of its symbols," according to a celebrated dictum of Cayley. And this is probably still as good a one-line explanation as any. The concept of a group is surely one of the central ideas of mathematics. Certainly there are a few branches of that science in which groups are not employed implicitly or explicitly. Nor is the use of groups confined to pure mathematics. Quantum theory, molecular and atomic structure, and crystallography are just a few of the areas of science in which the idea of a group as a measure of symmetry has played an important part. The theory of groups is the oldest branch of modern algebra. Its origins are to be found in the work of Joseph Louis Lagrange (1736-1813), Paulo Ruffini (1765-1822), and Evariste Galois (1811-1832) on the theory of algebraic equations. Their groups consisted of permutations of the variables or of the roots of polynomials, and indeed for much of the nineteenth century all groups were finite permutation groups. Nevertheless many of the fundamental ideas of group theory were introduced by these early workers and their successors, Augustin Louis Cauchy (1789-1857), Ludwig Sylow (1832-1918), Camille Jordan (1838-1922) among others. The concept of an abstract group is clearly recognizable in the work of Arthur Cayley (1821-1895) but it did not really win widespread acceptance until Walther von Dyck (1856-1934) introduced presentations of groups.

Download or read book The Elementary Theory of Groups written by Benjamin Fine and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2014-10-29 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After being an open question for sixty years the Tarski conjecture was answered in the affirmative by Olga Kharlampovich and Alexei Myasnikov and independently by Zlil Sela. Both proofs involve long and complicated applications of algebraic geometry over free groups as well as an extension of methods to solve equations in free groups originally developed by Razborov. This book is an examination of the material on the general elementary theory of groups that is necessary to begin to understand the proofs. This material includes a complete exposition of the theory of fully residually free groups or limit groups as well a complete description of the algebraic geometry of free groups. Also included are introductory material on combinatorial and geometric group theory and first-order logic. There is then a short outline of the proof of the Tarski conjectures in the manner of Kharlampovich and Myasnikov.

Book Elementary Number Theory Group Theory and Ramanujan Graphs

Download or read book Elementary Number Theory Group Theory and Ramanujan Graphs written by Giuliana Davidoff and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003-01-27 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text is a self-contained study of expander graphs, specifically, their explicit construction. Expander graphs are highly connected but sparse, and while being of interest within combinatorics and graph theory, they can also be applied to computer science and engineering. Only a knowledge of elementary algebra, analysis and combinatorics is required because the authors provide the necessary background from graph theory, number theory, group theory and representation theory. Thus the text can be used as a brief introduction to these subjects and their synthesis in modern mathematics.

Book Group Theory and Its Applications

Download or read book Group Theory and Its Applications written by Ernest M. Loebl and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-05-12 with total page 725 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Group Theory and Its Applications focuses on the applications of group theory in physics and chemistry. The selection first offers information on the algebras of lie groups and their representations and induced and subduced representations. Discussions focus on the functions of positive type and compact groups; orthogonality relations for square-integrable representations; group, topological, Borel, and quotient structures; and classification of semisimple lie algebras in terms of their root systems. The text then takes a look at the generalization of Euler's angles and projective representation of the Poincare group in a quaternionic Hilbert space. The manuscript ponders on group theory in atomic spectroscopy, group lattices and homomorphism, and group theory in solid state physics. Topics include band theory of solids, lattice vibrations in solids, stationary states in the quantum theory of matter, coupled tensors, and shell structure. The text then examines the group theory of harmonic oscillators and nuclear structure and de Sitter space and positive energy. The selection is a dependable reference for physicists and chemists interested in group theory and its applications.

Book Applications of the Theory of Groups in Mechanics and Physics

Download or read book Applications of the Theory of Groups in Mechanics and Physics written by Petre P. Teodorescu and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2004-04-30 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The notion of group is fundamental in our days, not only in mathematics, but also in classical mechanics, electromagnetism, theory of relativity, quantum mechanics, theory of elementary particles, etc. This notion has developed during a century and this development is connected with the names of great mathematicians as E. Galois, A. L. Cauchy, C. F. Gauss, W. R. Hamilton, C. Jordan, S. Lie, E. Cartan, H. Weyl, E. Wigner, and of many others. In mathematics, as in other sciences, the simple and fertile ideas make their way with difficulty and slowly; however, this long history would have been of a minor interest, had the notion of group remained connected only with rather restricted domains of mathematics, those in which it occurred at the beginning. But at present, groups have invaded almost all mathematical disciplines, mechanics, the largest part of physics, of chemistry, etc. We may say, without exaggeration, that this is the most important idea that occurred in mathematics since the invention of infinitesimal calculus; indeed, the notion of group expresses, in a precise and operational form, the vague and universal ideas of regularity and symmetry. The notion of group led to a profound understanding of the character of the laws which govern natural phenomena, permitting to formulate new laws, correcting certain inadequate formulations and providing unitary and non contradictory formulations for the investigated phenomena.

Book Lie Groups Lie Algebras and Representations

Download or read book Lie Groups Lie Algebras and Representations written by Brian Hall and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-05-11 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook treats Lie groups, Lie algebras and their representations in an elementary but fully rigorous fashion requiring minimal prerequisites. In particular, the theory of matrix Lie groups and their Lie algebras is developed using only linear algebra, and more motivation and intuition for proofs is provided than in most classic texts on the subject. In addition to its accessible treatment of the basic theory of Lie groups and Lie algebras, the book is also noteworthy for including: a treatment of the Baker–Campbell–Hausdorff formula and its use in place of the Frobenius theorem to establish deeper results about the relationship between Lie groups and Lie algebras motivation for the machinery of roots, weights and the Weyl group via a concrete and detailed exposition of the representation theory of sl(3;C) an unconventional definition of semisimplicity that allows for a rapid development of the structure theory of semisimple Lie algebras a self-contained construction of the representations of compact groups, independent of Lie-algebraic arguments The second edition of Lie Groups, Lie Algebras, and Representations contains many substantial improvements and additions, among them: an entirely new part devoted to the structure and representation theory of compact Lie groups; a complete derivation of the main properties of root systems; the construction of finite-dimensional representations of semisimple Lie algebras has been elaborated; a treatment of universal enveloping algebras, including a proof of the Poincaré–Birkhoff–Witt theorem and the existence of Verma modules; complete proofs of the Weyl character formula, the Weyl dimension formula and the Kostant multiplicity formula. Review of the first edition: This is an excellent book. It deserves to, and undoubtedly will, become the standard text for early graduate courses in Lie group theory ... an important addition to the textbook literature ... it is highly recommended. — The Mathematical Gazette

Book Groups and Characters

Download or read book Groups and Characters written by Victor E Hill and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1999-11-22 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Group representation theory is both elegant and practical, with important applications to quantum mechanics, spectroscopy, crystallography, and other fields in the physical sciences. Until now, however, there have been virtually no accessible treatments of group theory that include representations and characters. The classic works in the field require a high level of mathematical sophistication, and other texts omit representations and characters. Groups and Characters offers an easy-to-follow introduction to the theory of groups and of group characters. Designed as a rapid survey of the subject, this unique text emphasizes examples and applications of the theorems, and avoids many of the longer and more difficult proofs. The author presents group theory through the Sylow Theorems and includes the full subgroup structure of A5. Representations and characters are worked out with numerous character tables, along with real and induced characters that lead to the table for S5. The text includes specific sections that provide the mathematical basis for some of the important applications of group theory in spectroscopy and molecular structure. It also offers numerous exercises-some stressing computation of concrete examples, others stressing development of the mathematical theory. Groups and Characters provides the ideal grounding for more advanced studies with the classic texts, and for more broad-based work in abstract algebra. Furthermore, physical scientists-whose experience with groups and characters may not be rigorous-will find Groups and Characters the ideal means for gaining a sense of the mathematics lying behind the techniques used in applications.

Book Group Theory and Its Applications

Download or read book Group Theory and Its Applications written by Ernest M. Loebl and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-05-10 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Group Theory and its Applications, Volume II covers the two broad areas of applications of group theory, namely, all atomic and molecular phenomena, as well as all aspects of nuclear structure and elementary particle theory. This volume contains five chapters and begins with the representation and tensor operators of the unitary groups. The next chapter describes wave equations, both Schrödinger’s and Dirac’s for a wide variety of potentials. These topics are followed by discussions of the applications of dynamical groups in dealing with bound-state problems of atomic and molecular physics. A chapter explores the connection between the physical constants of motion and the unitary group of the Hamiltonian, the symmetry adaptation with respect to arbitrary finite groups, and the Dixon method for computing irreducible characters without the occurrence of numerical errors. The last chapter deals with the study of the extension, representation, and applications of Galilei group. This book will prove useful to mathematicians, practicing engineers, and physicists.
