Book Principals and Student Achievement

Download or read book Principals and Student Achievement written by Kathleen Cotton and published by ASCD. This book was released on 2003-10-15 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What are the direct and indirect influences of principals on student achievement? How do successful principals motivate others? What kinds of relationships do they have with parents, students, and staff? Principals and Student Achievement identifies 26 essential traits and behaviors of effective principals to show how they achieve success as instructional leaders. Based on a review of 81 key research articles from the last 20 years, this concise book examines how certain practices can affect student achievement, including: * Communication and interaction * Classroom observation and feedback to teachers * Recognition of student and staff achievement * Dedication to a safe and orderly school environment * Support of professional development of staff * Role modeling The book also reviews differences in instructional leadership between elementary and secondary principals, male and female principals, principals in high- and low-socioeconomic-status schools, and more. We all know that principals are important to student success, but few people have pinpointed exactly how they make a positive difference. At a time when principals are being asked to do more for school reform and accountability, Principals and Student Achievement provides a valuable resource for identifying what it takes to be an effective principal and, in turn, an effective school. Book Qualities of Effective Elementary Principals

Download or read book Qualities of Effective Elementary Principals written by Kimberly Garvey and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this descriptive case study was to understand what elementary principals, elementary teachers, and parents of elementary school students perceive as effective leadership skills in the areas of instructional leadership and school culture for an elementary principal. Five elementary principals, 75 elementary school teachers, and 33 parents of elementary students from two school districts in south central Pennsylvania participated in the study. Each participant responded to a survey created by the researcher. In addition, all five principals and eleven teachers participated in face to face interviews. For the parents, 18 responded to open ended focus group questions. In the area of instructional leadership principals favored qualities that mirrored their daily activities such as : (a) setting instructional goals, (b) using assessment results to show progress, and (c) observing teachers and staff to improve instructional methodology, while teachers and parents considered valuing teaching and learning and motivation of staff as very important qualities of an effective elementary principal. Principals, teachers, and parents all highly valued many school culture qualities such as: (a) developing positive relationships, (b) being trustworthy, (c) respecting others, and (d) supporting others.

Book An Elusive Search

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to explore the perceived instructional leadership behaviors of principals in schools in Alabama and to investigate the relationship between instructional leadership and school effectiveness. This study determined the extent of the relationship between principals' perceptions of their instructional leadership practices, specifically the instructional leadership functions and dimensions identified by the Principal Instructional Management Rating Scale ([PIMRS] Hallinger, 1983/1990), and school effectiveness as described by the Alabama State Department of Education determinant of student achievement, the ACT Aspire. Perceptions of principals were gathered from 94 principals in elementary, middle, and high schools in Alabama. This study used a non-experimental, descriptive, and cross-sectional research design that examined principals' leadership behaviors and determined the degree to which these could be linked with indicators of school effectiveness. This study sought to answer the following research questions: (1) To what extent do principals demonstrate instructional leadership behaviors characterized by PIMRS framework? (2) What are the levels of performance of schools as indicated by their ACT Aspire achievement data, and do these vary by socioeconomic status or community setting? (3) What is the relationship between the instructional leadership behaviors of principals and the performance of schools? (4) Do the perceptions of principals regarding instructional leadership behaviors characterized by the PIMRS framework vary by: (a) total of years of experience in educational leadership, (b) years of experience as principal at the current school, (c) level of education, (d) the grade span of the school, (e) indicators of school socioeconomic status? Findings indicated that a small, but significant positive relationship existed between the instructional leadership dimension Defining the School Mission and the proficiency rates of schools in both Reading and Mathematics. The school's socioeconomic context was a significant variable related student achievement as was the school's community setting. School principal's emphasis on instructional leadership varied by their experience both in terms of years of experience at the current school as principal and total years in educational leadership overall. This study provides administrators and policy makers in Alabama with a confirmation of the widely held assumption that principals are difference makers in the achievement of schools. Further, this study adds to the body of literature linking specific instructional leadership behaviors and increased student achievement.

Book Parent and Teacher Perceptions of Characteristics of the Effective Elementary School Principal

Download or read book Parent and Teacher Perceptions of Characteristics of the Effective Elementary School Principal written by William M. Bray and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The role of the elementary principal is more challenging and complex than ever before. Principals are not only expected to be strong leaders, but they are expected to practice shared leadership with their various constituent groups. The ever-changing responsibilities of the position have contributed to disparate views on the role of the principal. Different constituent groups vary in their perceptions of an effective principal. The better a principal understands the perceptions and expectations of the various constituent groups he or she serves, the more likely it is that a principal can fulfill the expectations and be perceived as effective. This study identified the perceptions of parents and teachers with regard to the characteristics of an effective elementary school principal. An inventory was used as the primary source of quantitative data for the study. Qualitative data was gathered through participant responses to a series of open-ended questions relating to five leadership themes interviewed within the inventory. Twenty-nine parents and forty teachers from three separate primary schools (grades kindergarten through three) within one school district were surveyed.

Book Principals Perceptions of Professional Development

Download or read book Principals Perceptions of Professional Development written by Lisa Lee Geren and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study is designed to investigate the perceptions of elementary school principals in the state of Arkansas regarding what supports they need to be effective instructional leaders. Phase I of this mixed method study uses an online survey of 112 elementary school principals to better understand their descriptions of an effective instructional leader and the professional development supports they need. Phase II consists of personal interviews of 12 elementary school principals. The research revealed four overarching themes: Personal Attributes, Values Relationships, Leadership Skill Sets, and Meaningful Professional Development. Principals described effective leaders as visionaries, hospitable, empowering others, visible, good listeners, collaborators, ethical, and ones who improve instruction, manage people, data, and foster school improvement. The research data showed that adult learners learn through problem solving, mentoring, and in one-on-one coaching situations. They expressed a need for professional development that was applicable, used real-life situations, and was designed to improve their understanding of new concepts and ideas. Specifically, principals requested professional development on topics including progress monitoring, intervention strategies, improving achievement among at-risk students, time management, teacher evaluation systems, and new curricula. Principals requested more support from human resources, specifically, the hiring of additional assistant principals who could assist with managerial tasks related to discipline, evaluations for classified staff, bus duty, and special education compliance issues, thus allowing more time for principals to embrace their roles as instructional leaders and to internalize the impact of their efforts on student achievement. Participating principals suggested district administrators arrange more frequent opportunities for principals to visit other schools and to meet with principals in their districts to gain a unified understanding of new information. They suggested that district administrators provide professional development in more comfortable locations and in small group settings that incorporate time to evaluate the impact of different strategies on students' academic performance. Finally, they desired professional development facilitated by high profile keynote speakers who are deemed as experts in their fields, as well as professional development that focuses on administrators' skills sets, progress monitoring, and migrant students.

Book Perceptions of the Role of Principal Supervisors in Nassau County New York

Download or read book Perceptions of the Role of Principal Supervisors in Nassau County New York written by Judith A. LaRocca and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research reveals that school leadership is the second most important in-school factor impacting student achievement, with greater impacts seen when principals' leadership practice is focused on learning. Research also shows that leadership practices in the area of principal supervision and supporting principal leadership have a positive impact on student achievement. This qualitative phenomenological study utilized concepts from sociocultural learning theory to frame understandings of the lived experiences of principal supervisors in Nassau County, New York. The rationale for this study stems from a moral imperative to address gaps in learning and achievement in disadvantaged groups through effective educational leadership practice. The purposefully selected sample included ten superintendents who were identified from the 56 public school districts in Nassau County, New York. Interview transcripts from superintendents responsible for supervising elementary principals practicing in K-6 and K-5 schools were coded to identify significant statements, resulting in over 425 individual coding references. The analysis and interpretation of the findings were organized into four analytic categories found within the conceptual framework: (a) leadership support, (b) role of principal supervisor, (c) student achievement outcomes, and (d) principal leadership. Findings show that principal supervisors' practice includes robust support for principals' professional learning and an emphasis on fostering responsive relationships with principals. Superintendents often support principals by including other central office administrators in supervision. Participants understand the importance of principal leadership and its impact on student achievement outcomes, especially principals' practice that emphasizes a focus on teaching and learning. The lens of sociocultural learning theory informs the extent to which these practices are performed. Along with these findings, this research identified that a specific role for supervising principals is not clearly defined and practitioners do not use a standard or framework that defines leadership practice focused on learning in their principal supervision work. Recommendations from this study have valuable implications for central office leaders who want to support principals' leadership through research-based principal supervision practice that can ultimately impact student achievement outcomes and reduce persistent achievement gaps for students in Nassau County public schools.
