Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Electropathic Guide: Prepared With Particular Reference to Home Practice; Containing Hints on the Care of the Sick, the Treatment of Disease, and the Use of Electricity; With Full Directions for Treating Over 100 Diseases In offering this little book to the public, it is but just to say that it was originally designed for our pupils, and those who had attended our lectures, as it was through the earnest and repeated solicitations of such that the work was undertaken, but before it was completed, so many calls were received for it from other sources that a few changes and additions were made, with the hope it would in some measure meet these demands also. These changes were made with particular reference to those who have had little experience in the use of Electricity, or in the treatment of diseases, for though it is no easy or unimportant task to prepare a work in every way suited to the wants of the inexperienced and uninformed, so many of this class are at the-present time resorting to the use of Electricity, that we thought it was better for them to have even a little light than to work entirely in the dark. Then they have our sympathy, and we would benefit them if we could, as most of them have tried the various remedies employed in the treatment of diseases without obtaining the desired relief, and in their gi eat suffering turn to Electricity as the last resort and only hope. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Electropathic Guide: Devoted to Electricity and Its Medical Applications The present issue of the electropathic guide, is quite entirely a reprint of a semi-annual number published in Boston, Mass, in the year 1849. So favorable was its reception, in that form, that seve ral thousand copies were disposed of in a few months. It was then permitted to go out of print, as the author had in course of prepara tion a full and complete treatise upon the practice to which it is de voted, but which the incessant duties of his profession have delayed to the present time, and must still delay. Incomplete as it is, it will be found a valuable assistant to those who would inform themselves in relation to the physiological rela tions, and great medical advantages of that mysterious agent, so nearly allied to vitality, electricity. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between the years 1850 and 1950, Americans became the leading energy consumers on the planet, expending tremendous physical resources on energy exploration, mental resources on energy exploitation, and monetary resources on energy acquisition. A unique combination of pseudoscientific theories of health and the public’s rudimentary understanding of energy created an age in which sources of industrial power seemed capable of curing the physical limitations and ill health that plagued Victorian bodies. Licensed and “quack” physicians alike promoted machines, electricity, and radium as invigorating cures, veritable “fountains of youth” that would infuse the body with energy and push out disease and death. The Body Electric is the first book to place changing ideas about fitness and gender in dialogue with the popular culture of technology. Whether through wearing electric belts, drinking radium water, or lifting mechanized weights, many Americans came to believe that by embracing the nation's rapid march to industrialization, electrification, and “radiomania,” their bodies would emerge fully powered. Only by uncovering this belief’s passions and products, Thomas de la Peña argues, can we fully understand our culture’s twentieth-century energy enthusiasm.
