This book was released on 2016-07-17 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The popularity of this presentation, in a style free from mathematical language, of the important facts and conclusions which modern science has brought forth in regard to the electrical nature of common matter, is shown by the necessity for a third edition of this work. The present edition has been entirely revised and the matter brought up to date, a procedure which has been rendered imperative by the rapidity with which new evidence is being developed by those whose lives are devoted to scientific research in this field. The volume is an excellent one for those who wish to become conversant with modern progress in this subject without the necessity of wading through mathematical demonstrations and developments of theory. - Electrical Review, Volume 67

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Electrical Nature of Matter and Radioactivity The content of this book has already been published as a series of articles in the Electrical Review. The two correlated subjects under consideration are of such general interest, that it has seemed desirable that the discussion of them should be made accessible in compact form. The several chapters as they originally appeared have, therefore, been carefully revised, and brought together in one volume. The author would extend his sincere thanks to his assistant, Dr. H. S. Uhler, for a number of valuable suggestions in connection with the revision of the work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Radiation and Revolution

Download or read book Radiation and Revolution written by Sabu Kohso and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2020-09-11 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Radiation and Revolution political theorist and anticapitalist activist Sabu Kohso uses the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster to illuminate the relationship between nuclear power, capitalism, and the nation-state. Combining an activist's commitment to changing the world with a theorist's determination to grasp the world in its complexity, Kohso outlines how the disaster is not just a pivotal event in postwar Japan; it represents the epitome of the capitalist-state mode of development that continues to devastate the planet's environment. Throughout, he captures the lived experiences of the disaster's victims, shows how the Japanese government's insistence on nuclear power embodies the constitution of its regime under the influence of US global strategy, and considers the future of a radioactive planet driven by nuclearized capitalism. As Kohso demonstrates, nuclear power is not a mere source of energy—it has become the organizing principle of the global order and the most effective way to simultaneously accumulate profit and govern the populace. For those who aspire to a world free from domination by capitalist nation-states, Kohso argues, the abolition of nuclear energy and weaponry is imperative.

It also covers applications in medicine and life sciences. A joint CERN-Springer initiative, the "Particle Physics Reference Library" provides revised and updated contributions based on previously published material in the well-known Landolt-Boernstein series on particle physics, accelerators and detectors (volumes 21A, B1,B2,C), which took stock of the field approximately one decade ago. Central to this new initiative is publication under full open access

Book Semiconducting Lead Chalcogenides

Download or read book Semiconducting Lead Chalcogenides written by IUrii Isaakovich Ravich and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last decade has seen radical changes in our understand ing of the physical properties of semiconductors. It has been es tablished that the energy spectrum of electrons is much more complex than had originally been predicted: in many cases, there are several energy bands with different parameters. It has been found that the effective carrier mass, which had been assumed to be constant for a given material, depends on the carrier energy, temperature, pressure, and even the nature and number of de fects. Our understanding of the mechanism of the motion and scat tering of carriers, recombination mechanisms, and interaction with electromagnetic radiation has also changed. New applications of semiconducting materials have been discovered and old ones have been extended; these include high-power devices, devices sensitive to infrared radiation, and lasers. The visible evidence of the pro gress is in the form of hundreds of publications, some of which re port extremely refined and comprehensive investigations of semi conducting materials. A scientist concerned with investigations or applications of semiconducting materials or devices cannot ignore these publica tions because of the possibility of repeating work already done or of committing serious error. s. On the other hand, a beginner would require years to obtain a thorough understanding of the literature in his own narrow subject, and in many cases this process would be like the chase of a tortoise by Achilles in the paradox of Zeno of Elea (495-435 B.
