Book The Electric Light and the Storing of Electrical Energy Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Electric Light and the Storing of Electrical Energy Classic Reprint written by Gerald Molloy and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-15 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Electric Light, and the Storing of Electrical Energy Observe that, although the great mass of nails has fallen down from the poles of the electro-magnet, there are one or two of the smaller nails still feebly clinging to it. To satisfy you that this is not a mere accident, I repeat the experiment again and again: each time, when the current is shut off, two or three small nails remain attached to the poles of the magnet. From this we may infer that, although the iron bar loses its magnetism, when the current ceases to pass, it does not lose: it altogether; some faint traces still remain. This is called residual magnetism: and I ask you now to take a note of it, because you will see, a little later on, what an important part this residual magnetism will be called upon to play, in the development of our machine. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Storage of Electrical Energy It is a fact. Deserving consideration, that the accumula tion of electricity by the Leyden jar increases the quantity effect, and diminishes the intensity of the electricity accumulated. As the Leyden jar serves to increase the discharge with out prolonging its effect it is not usually considered under the head of electrical storage of this age of electricity, It has the property of producing secondary currents in an induction apparatus when discharged through the primary coil. With a strong charge this secondary current may be caused to melt a foot of platinum wire. And alone or in connection with its induced effects will no doubt play an important part in the storage of electrical energy in the future. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Student's d104-Book of Electricity The grand theory of the conservation of energy is only now in its youth, and the principle of the atomic structure of matter is scarcely out of its cradle. The idea of a universe composed of atoms, linked together by some medium and in ceaseless motion, and that on the character of this motion depend heat, light, electricity, magnetism, chemism, sound, &c., is only now Shaping itself into form in the mind of the philosopher. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to Electricity The book, therefore, seems to me admirably adapted for the instruction of a class, but there is another point of view from which it may be regarded. If the man in the street, or, in other words, a person of ordinary information and intelligence who has passed through the ordinary school curriculum, wishes to obtain some insight into the nature of electricity, there is hardly any English book at present to which he can be referred. Diagrammatic descriptions of machines for the commercial pro duction of electrical energy will hardly help him to what he wants, nor will the analysis of compli cated instruments, like Lord Kelvin's multicellular voltmeter. Here, on the other hand, he should find many simple experiments, which, even without actually performing them, should give him, when read, a fair apprehension of the laws they are intended to illustrate, and should enable him to appreciate the many popular lectures now delivered on the subject. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Electrical Distribution of Heat, Light and Power Believing that the subject of electrical distribution and its attendant dangers is of interest to a wider circle of readers than. Is represented by the membership of the medico-legal International Congress, the writer republishes his address, with a list of deaths from electric lighting apparatus and the able paper of Mr. John Murray Mitchell. To prevent any hasty and ill-advised legislation on the matter, it is necessary that it should receive careful con sideration from scientific, legal and business standpoints. Though the writer would favor making the law suggested by Mr. Mitchell apply solely to the high-tension alternating current on the ground that the continuous current can be made safe, it will perhaps serve as a basis for discussion which could not otherwise be obtained. Book Practical Electricity Classic Reprint

Download or read book Practical Electricity Classic Reprint written by Terrell Croft and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-18 with total page 662 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Electricity Seven years in the making, is the record for Practical Elec tricity. Some Of the material was written during the years from 1910 to 1913 for the American Electrician's Handbook, but it developed that the text thus prepared was not suitable for a handbook. Hence, it was stored away temporarily and has been incorporated in the present volume. Since June, 1916, a very considerable portion Of the author's time and effort has been devoted to this work. Practical Electricity was written for certain definite purposes. Primarily, its Object is to present the fundamental facts and theo ries relating to electricity and its present-day applications in a straight-forward, easily-understood way for study by any man, Of little mathematical training, who desires to acquire a working knowledge of the subject. If a man understands arithmetic he should be able to get the meat out of this book. Secondarily, the book was designed for university graduates who desire a medium whereby they can, with minimum efiort, review, refresh and re construct in line with modern theory and practice their concepts Of electric and magnetic phenomena. While it has not been found necessary to use the higher mathematics, the statements and ex planations are technically accurate. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Electric Light From this beginning the section was expanded to include the whole field of engineering and is designated at present as the Divisions of Mineral and Mechanical Technology. The growth and enlarge ment of the collections has been particularly marked in the fields of mining and mineral industries; mechanical engineering, especially pertaining to the steam engine, internal combustion engine and loco motive naval architecture, and electrical engineering, particularly the development of the telegraph, telephone and the electric light. In the acquisition of objects visualizing the history of electric light the Museum has been rather fortunate, particularly as regards the developments in the United States. Thus mention may be made of the original Patent Office models of the more important dynamos, arc lights and incandescent lights, together with original commercial apparatus after these models a unit of the equipment used in the first commercially successful installation on land of an incandescent lighting system, presented by Joseph E. Hinds in whose engraving establish ment in New York City the installation was made in 1881 and a large series of incandescent lights, mainly originals, visualizing chrono logically the developments of the Edison light from Its inception, pre sented at intervals since the year 1898 by the General Electric Company. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Electric Lighting The application of electricity to the production of light is of but recent date, even as a scientific discovery; and as a matter of practical use for commercial purposes, it goes back but a very few years. Sir Humphrey Davy, at the Royal Institution in 1810, by breaking the continuity of the circuit of an electric current emanating from a battery of 2000 cells, and by separating slightly the two extremities of the broken circuit, produced a most brilliant light in an arch-like form in the intervening space. The name of the "voltaic arc" has been given to this strip of light; while that of "electrodes" has been assigned to the two points between which the arc is formed. Book Electric Lighting

Download or read book Electric Lighting written by Hippolyte Fontaine and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-16 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Electric Lighting: A Practical Treatise The electric light may be utilised in two ways, either by powerful foci illuminating or visible at great distances, or by less intense foci giving a light suitable to all kinds of night work. In the first case, nothing can equal the services rendered by electricity; in the second case, there is no longer com parison, the advantage being sometimes in favour of gas, oil, petroleum, &c., sometimes in favour of electricity. Thus for lighthouse service, fortifications, maritime service, shores, armies in campaign, the electric light is superior to all others; for show-rooms and manufactories, for open-air yards and large workshops, it is equally suitable; for domestic house hold illumination, and for certain trades carried on under low roofs, where there are numerous local subdivisions, gas, oil, or petroleum is preferable. In many establishments lighted by gas it has been advantageous to substitute electricity. In any case the number of applications would be very limited if we should continue to deprive ourselves of light, as it is the custom to do in the majority of manufactures, where during the night superintend ence is impossible, where the work produced during the night is much less than in the day. But, we hasten to add, this statu qua is not to be feared; some intelligent manufacturers - and their number is great - will replace their present system Of lighting by a system of lighting four or five times more intense, and they will not hesitate to admit that their products are better, in larger quantities, and consequently more economical; this example will not be lost, and to sustain competition their fellow-manufacturers will imitate them.
