Book The Electric Lamp Industry Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Electric Lamp Industry Classic Reprint written by G. Arncliffe Percival and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-19 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Electric Lamp Industry While electric lamp manufacture is essentially a scientific industry, the short account in the following pages is not intended as a technical treatise. Certain data has necessarily been introduced to make the description more complete, which leaves parts of the text open to criticism by those engaged in lamp manufacture. In the preface to most books one usually makes a formal acknowledgment of assistance, but in the present case it is doubtful if the work would have been compiled if the writer's colleagues had not offered such generous help. During a period of severe illness and also while in America the author found the value of many friends, and desires to express publicly his appreciation of help from Dr. W. Phillips, who vigorously but kindly blue pencilled the original copy in the interests of future readers; also to Mr. Paul Freedman for his help in connection with the material in the chapter on vapour lamps and to Mr. S. B. Staines for his efforts in collecting the illustrations. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work. Forgotten Books uses state-of-the-art technology to digitally reconstruct the work, preserving the original format whilst repairing imperfections present in the aged copy. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Electrical Industry: Lighting, Traction, and Power On the other hand, the industry has made tremendous progress in the twenty Odd years since it was born - progress much more rapid than that made, say, by the steam-engine a century ago. There are reasons for the rapidity of the advance, and a glance at the history of the science will Show how it was that electricity suddenly appeared in the commercial world after having passed centuries in the grub-stage in the labora tories of philosophers. Illuminants have been steadily improved and refined. New types Of lamps have been developed giving better colors Of light, more efficient light production, cheaper units and a greater range Of sizes. Principles Of illumination have been studied and applied in the better solution Of lighting problems. Indirect lighting, semi or complete, has introduced great possibilities into the handling Of both small and large installations. The economic value Of good lighting is better appreciated. Color is beginning to play an important part in lighting schemes. It is destined to become even more widely utilized. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Incandescent Electric Lamps and Their Application A little thought will establish the fact, however, that the improve ments made have been chiefly in the lamp itself, the introduction of the metal filament being responsible for the increased efficiency that has placed electric lighting practically within reach of all. In comparison with the advances made in filament construction those made in the direction of scientific artificial lighting have been small. Book History of the Incandescent Lamp Classic Reprint

Download or read book History of the Incandescent Lamp Classic Reprint written by John W. Howell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-18 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Incandescent Lamp Constant experimenting was done to determine the relative advantages Of different ways Of performing the various Operations, and it was a long time before definite methods were settled upon. These methods were frequently changed as more experience was accumulated. Many lamps were burned On life test from the very beginning, to determine the relative value Of the various experiments. This constant experimenting and testing made the work most interesting. During the first year or two, Mr. Edison Spent a good deal Of time at the factory, and had a laboratory there. His presence and leadership Were a great inspiration to all, so that time meant nothing to those Who were helping him to carry out his work or experiments. As the various methods Of manufacture became settled, it became possible to organize the factory Operations and to adopt piece work methods; but it was a long time before any lamp making machinery enabled the substitution Of un skilled labor for the skilled glass workers. It is hard for anyone who sees the modern lamp factory to realize the work done in developing the art to its present degree Of perfection. The lamp is apparently very simple, but its design, manufacture, and development require quite a broad knowl edge Of physics and chemistry. This has attracted many bright-minded men to the industry, who have found it a most interesting field Of work. The growth Of the business, from the invention Of the lamp to the present day, has all taken place during the working lives Of some Of the men still in the business. This history Of the lamp has been written in order to portray the changes and developments which brought it to its present high state Of perfection and efficiency. Book Standard Lighting

Download or read book Standard Lighting written by H. C. Cushing and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-06 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Standard Lighting: With Incandescent Electric Lamps Since an Object is seen by the light which comes to it from the source and thence by reflection to the eye, it follows that color in the Object is seen only when the light contains rays Of that color. For example, a red Object will appear black under light in which red rays are lacking or a blue Object will appear black when blue rays are absent in the source. Daylight is composed of all the colors in proportions seen in the rainbow The light from Mazda lamps contains all the colors composing daylight but if the spectra, or rainbows, Of the two were to be compared it would be seen that the Mazda lamp was richer than daylight in the orange - red region and weaker in the blue. For ordinary purposes, the light from clear Mazda lamps is sufficiently like daylight to answer all requirements, but where color discr1m1nat10n is a factor, as in sorting or grading pro cesses for example, and in the laundry where scorch marks must be readily distinguishable, or where the artificial light is used to supplement daylight, as in an Office, daylight lamps, which screen out the majority Of the excess orange-red rays, find wide application.
