Book Electoral Registration in Northern Ireland

Download or read book Electoral Registration in Northern Ireland written by Great Britain. Parliament. House of Commons. Northern Ireland Affairs Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2004 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Committee is happy with the effectiveness of the Electoral Fraud (Northern Ireland) Act 2002 but there are still flaws in the current arrangements. Less than 84 percent of these eligible to vote in Northern Ireland, are currently registered; young people and socially economically depressed groups are especially under-represented. Less than 25 percent of 17 and 18 years olds are registered. Voter's names are no longer placed automatically on next year's register, which is an effective anti-fraud measure, but on the other hand this has highlighted the low level of registration. Fewer of the new Electoral Identity Cards (EIDs) were issued than expected, and, while other forms of photographic ID are acceptable at polling stations, over 3,500 voters were turned away from polling stations at recent elections, because of ID problems. An example of the lack of joined-up thinking was the poor performance of two competing Government telephone help lines during the 2003 canvass period.

Book The Problem of Governing

Download or read book The Problem of Governing written by Michael Keating and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-12-06 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an appreciation of the work of renowned scholar Richard Rose. Over a career spanning more than six decades, Rose has explored a vast range of subjects related to British, American and comparative politics. His work, however, has always been concerned with an underlying theme: governing modern societies in changing times. Celebrating Rose's career which has shaped postwar political science in decisive ways, this volume examines issues, debates and lines of research stimulated by his work. Chapters are organized thematically under five headings central to his research: parties and elections, political institutions, public policy, governing at multiple levels, and trust and legitimacy. The book demonstrates that politics cannot be reduced to economics, the actions of individuals, predictive science or functional determinism, but has its own logic and modes of justification. It will appeal to scholars and students of politics, public policy and governance.

Download or read book UK Election Law written by Bob Watt and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2020-11-25 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains a critical analysis of the law and politics governing the conduct of statutory elections in the United Kingdom. The author argues that elections have now become a marketplace for 'buying' the most seemingly attractive political party on offer into power, rather than an expression of democratic self-government. Thematically arranged, he considers a number of issues dating from before the Civil War through nineteenth century reforms to the foundation of the Electoral Commission and up to their paper 'Securing the Vote' published in 2005. The book Framing the debate for the Electoral Administration Bill 2005, it contains, amongst other legal analysis, analyses leading cases, including:Sanders v ChichesterR v JonesR v Whicher; ex parte MainwaringIn re Fermanagh and South Tyrone. The author presents an argument for a radical reappraisal of election law which involves, rather than excludes the self-governing citizenry, suggesting that election law, perhaps above all other kinds of law, should be the subject of vigorous and open public debate.

Download or read book Standards Matter written by Committee on Standards in Public Life and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2013-01-17 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Committee for Standards in Public Life felt that the time was right to undertake a review of the key lessons that have been learnt since the Nolan Committee's first report (ISBN 9780101285025) was published in 1995 about how to improve ethical standards in public life - to stand back and reflect on what has been achieved and what still needs to be done. The report argues that much of the basic infrastructure to improve standards is now in place. Statements of key principles and codes of conduct have been adopted by most public bodies, new regulators have been created or had their existing remits clarified, and awareness of principles such as integrity, accountability and openness has increased considerably. The Committee believes standards of behaviour in many areas of public life have improved. But the Committee finds it disturbing that concerns continue to be raised about the integrity of so many of the country's key institutions or those within them; and the evidence of the last few years and months suggests that there is still much to do before the high standards in public life to which we all aspire are fully internalised in the cultures of all our public institutions. The report concludes that the need now is not for more principles, codes or regulators but rather for the existing arrangements to be more consistently and actively implemented.
