Book The Book of the Elders

Download or read book The Book of the Elders written by and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 2012-05-01 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early part of the fourth century, a few Christians, mostly men and some women, began to withdraw from "the world" to retreat into the desert, there to practice their new religion more seriously. The person who aspired to "renounce the world" first had to find an "elder," a person who would accept him as a disciple and apprentice. To his elder (whom he would address as abba—father) the neophyte owed complete obedience; from his abba, he would receive provisions (as it were) for the road to virtue. In addition to the abba's own example of living, there was the verbal teaching of the elders in sayings and tales, setting out the theory and practice of the eremitic life. In due course, these sayings (or apophthegmata) were written down and, later, collected and codified. The earliest attempts to codify tales and sayings are now lost. As the collection grew, they were first organized alphabetically, according to the name of the abba who spoke them, in a major collection known as the Apophthegmata Patrum Alphabetica. A supplementary collection, the Anonymous Apophthegmata, followed. Later, both collections were combined and arranged systematically rather than alphabetically. This collection was created sometime between 500 and 575 and later went through a couple of major revisions, the second of which appeared sometime before 970. This second revision was published in an excellent new critical edition, with a French translation, in 1993. Now, in The Book of the Elders, John Wortley offers an English translation of this collection, based entirely on the Greek of that text.

Book Choice Sayings of Wisdom for Modern Elders

Download or read book Choice Sayings of Wisdom for Modern Elders written by Sparrow and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-02-17 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When did I get old? I think it sneaked up on me when I wasn't looking. I could definitely tell I was not myself in my early 60s. Minor problems I had never had before were popping up. Decreasing abilities, and increasing disabilities were showing up as I turned 70. Now that I'm into my eighth decade, I am informed, and I have to admit, that I'm not so sharp, that brain dysfunction is setting in. And my mirror has definitely got some distortions in it. This can't be my face I'm trying to shave around all these creases and bumps. I look around at some of the older folks at the senior center and I think, "Oh, oh. I am in trouble. Why did I want to live a long time?" and somebody answered, "Consider the alternative." And so I consider the alternative. Do I want to keep on living? The decades seem to fly by faster as body and brain slow down. When I count my-life span in decades, I have, maybe, one, probably less if I am average . . . maybe two if I should survive to very old age. And why should I want to live so long if the last years are very poor quality of existence? I believe the Psalm writer is right when he wrote Psalm 90:12 Teach us how short our life is so that we may become wise. I agree, life is very short, but is knowing that making me any wiser? And what good is being wiser if I know I will soon be gone? I might as well eat, drink, and live it up, because tomorrow I'm going to die. No! I can't do that. I've already wasted too much of my life. There must still be something I can do that will have value. Though I have read many books, I have found that the Bible is the only one that gives me answers to this problem of aging. That is because it gives me an answer to the problem of dying. Despite what some scientists and philosophers say, I believe the Bible has the answer to relief from the fear of death and the uncomfortable living that precedes it. By believing the promises in the Bible, I know that I have a soul that will live forever. When this old body takes its last breath, my soul will live on and be given a new and perfect body. And that, dear reader, is what gives me the answers I need to the problem of old age and dying. So, no matter how I may look and feel, I am rejoicing in my spirit as I wait for the resurrection of my soul with its new body, to live in God's eternal kingdom. I no longer cling to this life as if it is all there is. When I am no use here, I know that I still have a fantastic future to look forward to. I pray that you, too, will consider putting your hope in Jesus.

Book What the Elders Have Taught Us

Download or read book What the Elders Have Taught Us written by and published by Graphic Arts Books. This book was released on 2013-04-08 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “This wonderful book gives the reader a glimpse into the cultural soul of the Alaska Native people, revealing how culture is very much alive and traditions are thriving.” — Margaret Nelson, Tlingit, Eagle moiety, President and CEO Alaska Native Heritage Center As Alaska’s Native peoples confront contemporary challenges, they increasingly find strength in the traditional values and practices that have sustained their cultures for millennia. In stirring words, What the Elders Have Taught Us pays tribute to the first Alaskans and the ancient values they consider paramount. Ten essayists, one from each of Alaska’s diverse Native cultures, were asked to write about a specific value that is common to all, lessons that have been part of their oral teachings for countless generations. The resulting essays are infused with personal reflection as well as profound truths. Featuring Roy Corral’s outstanding photography, What the Elders Have Taught Us offers rare insight into the lives of Alaska’s First People—at work and play, in celebration and sorrow—living out the legacy handed down by the elders.

Book Happiness Is a Choice You Make

Download or read book Happiness Is a Choice You Make written by John Leland and published by Sarah Crichton Books. This book was released on 2018-01-23 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New York Times Bestseller! An extraordinary look at what it means to grow old and a heartening guide to well-being, Happiness Is a Choice You Make weaves together the stories and wisdom of six New Yorkers who number among the “oldest old”— those eighty-five and up. In 2015, when the award-winning journalist John Leland set out on behalf of The New York Times to meet members of America’s fastest-growing age group, he anticipated learning of challenges, of loneliness, and of the deterioration of body, mind, and quality of life. But the elders he met took him in an entirely different direction. Despite disparate backgrounds and circumstances, they each lived with a surprising lightness and contentment. The reality Leland encountered upended contemporary notions of aging, revealing the late stages of life as unexpectedly rich and the elderly as incomparably wise. Happiness Is a Choice You Make is an enduring collection of lessons that emphasizes, above all, the extraordinary influence we wield over the quality of our lives. With humility, heart, and wit, Leland has crafted a sophisticated and necessary reflection on how to “live better”—informed by those who have mastered the art.

Book Understanding the Congregation s Authority

Download or read book Understanding the Congregation s Authority written by Jonathan Leeman and published by B&H Publishing Group. This book was released on 2016-01-15 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Congregational authority is less about the meetings and more about the mission. Congregationalism has a bad rap for well-known reasons: inefficient meetings, upstart members, browbeaten ministers. But biblical congregationalism isn’t so much about the meetings. It’s about empowering the whole church to promote and protect the gospel. Pastors lead and equip. Members get to work strengthening one another and pursuing Christ’s mission in the world.
