Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Psalms 113-118 are known as "Egyptian Hallel" psalms (Hallel simply means "Praise Yahweh!"), thus they were written as praises that were sung in connection with the Passover meal and other Hebrew festivals and reflect upon God's redemption of his people, particularly from their bondage in Egypt. In the context of the Passover celebration, Psalms 113 and 114 typically would have been sung before the Passover meal and Psalms 115-118 would have been sung afterward. It is most likely these were the psalms that Jesus and his disciples sung after the Last Supper, a Passover meal, before their retirement to the Garden of Gethsemane and Jesus' subsequent arrest (Matthew 26:30). These psalms are designed not only to aid the Hebrews in their worship, but they were also designed with an evangelistic flavor to them. Imagine the impact that these psalms must have had on visitors to Jerusalem during these festival times. You would have streams of people entering into the city singing praises to God for his wondrous works and inviting others to sing along with them. It was meant to be an exciting time-a time that might bring even outsiders to investigate the wonders of this mighty God and the promise of his marvelous Messiah.

Book The Formation of the Hebrew Psalter

Download or read book The Formation of the Hebrew Psalter written by Gianni Barbiero and published by . This book was released on 2021-10 with total page 463 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This volume, which is based on the papers given at a panel at the 2019 SBL International Meeting in Rome, represents current discourses in Psalms research. The past decades have been marked by the paradigm shift from form criticism to different exegetical approaches which consider the Book of Psalms as the literary context of the individual Psalms. More recently, it has been pointed out that the complex evidence given by the manuscripts from antiquity to the Middle Ages does not support the notion of a fixed canonical text as presupposed by some approaches. The present volume combines contributions about such basic considerations with studies of individual groups of Psalms. With different methodological and hermeneutical approaches, they open up perspectives on the interrelation between the origin, composition and reception of the Psalms." --

Book excerpt: Book of Psalms - Devotional THE PSALMS A very important part of the Bible. A FIVE FOLD DEVOTIONAL BOOK There are five things to keep in mind when we look at the Psalms. These are covered within the pages of this devotional. But before introducing that, let us see the importance of the book of Psalms in knowing more about our Lord. Look carefully at Luke 24:25-27 and verses 44-45. He said to them, "How foolish you are, and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Did not the Christ have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?" And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself. He said to them, "This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms." Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. Jesus used the Psalms many times in His teaching and life. They were much in His thinking. Here are some psalms concerning our Lord: David's greater Son 89 132 Incarnation of Son 8 40 Rejection of Christ 118 78:1-2 Betrayal of Christ 69 109 Death of Messiah & beyond 22 2 Victory over death 16 102 Messiah's marriage & ministry 45 110 Reign of glorious King 72 68 Paul also admonished the believers to make ready reference to the psalms: Ephesians 5:18-20 Colossians 3:16-17.

Such phrases leap to mind whenever Christians lift their hearts to God. For many, in fact, the Psalms are the richest part of the Old Testament. Derek Kidner provides a fresh and penetrating guide to Psalms 73—150. He analyzes each psalm in depth, comments on interpretative questions and brings out the universal relevance of the texts. He also gives special help on the psalmists' cries for vengeance. Book excerpt: The nine essays in this volume originated in the discussions of the Psalms programme unit of the Society of Biblical Literature and a number were first presented as papers at the SBL meetings in 1989 and 1990. The volume documents the growing interest among scholars in understanding the book of Psalms not only as a collection of liturgical materials from ancient Israel and Judah but also as a coherent literary whole. Part I considers the nature and significance of this new approach; it contains essays by J.L. Mays, Roland E. Murphy, Walter Brueggemann, Gerald H. Wilson and David M. Howard, Jr. Part II illustrates the application of this approach and offers preliminary conclusions concerning the shape of the Psalter and its component books; it contains essays by Gerald H. Wilson, Patrick D. Miller, Jr, J. Clinton McCann, Jr. and David M. Howard, Jr.
