Book An Investigation of the Capital Structure Policy of Egyptian Banking Sector Firms

Download or read book An Investigation of the Capital Structure Policy of Egyptian Banking Sector Firms written by Sherine Farouk Abdel Al and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research examines the relationship between capital structure and three of its major determinants proposed in the prior literature - profitability, growth rate and size. Our sample includes data for all banks listed in Kompass Egypt, in the period 1995-2007. We utilize panel data regression analysis and show that the total debt ratio is negatively affected by both the bank's return on assets and its earnings growth rate. However, in contrast with the prior literature, the size of the Egyptian banks (measured by total assets) is a weak predictor of their capital structure. Interestingly, only 10% to 20% of the total debt ratio variances are explained by profitability and growth rate, the rest being due to company-related and stable in time idiosyncrasies. Our results differ when we attempt to explain short-term and long-term debt with the same determinants.

Book Determinants of Egyptian Banking Sector Profitability

Download or read book Determinants of Egyptian Banking Sector Profitability written by Heba Hashem and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to examine the determinants of banking sector profitability in Egypt to shed light on the most influential variables that have a significant impact on the performance of this vital sector. Design/methodology/approach - The analysis includes a time series model of quarterly data from 2004 to 2014. The model utilizes Cointegration technique to investigate the long-run relationship between the return on equity as a proxy for bank profitability and several bank-specific variables including liquidity, capital adequacy, and percentage of non-performing loans. In addition, Vector Error Correction Model (VECM) is utilized to explore the short-run dynamics of the model and the speed of adjustment to reach the long-run equilibrium. Findings - The main findings of this work show that banking sector profitability is inversely related to capital adequacy, the percentage of loan provisions and the ratio of deposits to total assets. On the other hand, it is positively related to the size of the banking sector which implies that the banking sector exhibits economies of scale.Research limitations/implications - The implications of this work is that it helps reveal the major factors affecting bank performance in the short-run and long-run, and hence provide bank managers and monetary policy makers with beneficial insights on how to enhance bank performance. Since the banking sector represents one of the main engines of financing investment, enhancing the efficiency of this sector would contribute to economic growth and prosperityOriginality/value - The Vector error correction model showed that about 4% of the disequilibrium is corrected each quarter to reach the long run equilibrium. In addition, all bank specific variables were found to affect profitability in the long-run only. This study would serve as a base that further work on Egyptian banking sector profitability can build on by incorporating more variables in the analysis or investigating other types of econometric models.

Book Interest Rate Spreads Efficiency in the Egyptian Banking Market

Download or read book Interest Rate Spreads Efficiency in the Egyptian Banking Market written by Mona Fayed and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates the efficiency of financial intermediation in the Egyptian banking market by determining the variables affecting the behavior of the interest-rate spread in Egypt for the period 1984-2007. It determines the factors behind the relative inefficiency in the intermediation process in Egypt as reflected in the wide interest rate spread. The analysis focuses on the private sector banks that include three types of banks: commercial banks (PSCB), business and investment banks (BIB), and branches of foreign banks (BFB). Panel data of the banks is used to formally investigate which bank-specific, industry and macroeconomic characteristics are the main drivers for the persistently high interest rate spreads observed in the Egyptian market during the period under study. The study applied two approaches in estimating this model: a static approach and a dynamic one. It highlights the policy measures that can help to improve the financial intermediation process in Egypt.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electronic Banking is relatively a recent technology that enables customers to perform many financial services with no need to visit bank branches. It is internet based technology that can be accessed through a PC (Internet banking) or a wireless network and mobile phone (Mobile banking). Book Competition and Privatization Of the Egyptian Banking

Download or read book Competition and Privatization Of the Egyptian Banking written by Tosson Nabil Deabes and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Egypt's efforts to liberalize its financial sector in the 1990s have been impressive. Egyptian authorities have been successful in reversing more than three decades of interventionist policies. The fundamental building blocks of this liberalization process now seem solid. They include a reduced fiscal deficit, and the unification and freeing of exchange rates, interest rates, and lending decisions from administrative control. The initial privatization of large banks has removed some of the extensive ownership links between banksőone likely cause of uncompetitive banking. The benefits of reform are beginning to show: inflation control consistent with growth rates, confidence in local currency, and buoyant stock market activity buttressed by numerous prominent privatizations. Capital flows into the economy have also been much stronger. Nevertheless, the transformation of the Egyptian financial sector into a modern marketoriented system is still in its infancy. In the future, economic changes which policies can affect should go hand in hand with institutional and attitudinal changes which are potentially more difficult to bring about. Policy makers must continue to work hard to build on the foundations they have laid thus far.

This book was released on 2016 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most important instruments of the financial system that reveals the future of the economy in any country is the profitability of the banking sector. Starting from 2008, Egypt was banged by consecutive shocks, both globally and locally, started with global financial crisis in Sep., 2008. The essential objective of the current study is to investigate factors that affect Egyptian banks' profitability before and after financial crisis using Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) through Eviews. The sample period covers from 2004 to 2013, return on assets and return on equity were used as proxy for banks' profitability. The explanatory variables which effect profitability are deposits to total assets ratio, operating income to asset ratio, credit quality, capital adequacy, loans rate, equity growth minus loan growth rate, asset share ratio and Egyptian banks' total assets to Egyptian gross domestic product (GDP).The empirical findings suggested that Egyptian banks with higher capital strength, asset share, and efficient management exhibit higher profitability level, whilst Egyptian banks with higher credit risk and loans intensity exhibit lower profitability level.
