Download or read book The Egocentric Localization of the Visual Horizontal in Normal and Labyrinthine defective Observers as a Function of Head and Body Tilt written by Brant Clark and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perception of the visual horizontal by observers in five different combinations of head and body position was studied to determine the effect of 20-degree body tilts. Both normal and labyrinthine-defective observers made five settings to the visual horizontal for each condition using a goggle device which presented a collimated line of light to the right eye while the other eye was covered. The results showed no significant constant errors in the settings by either group, and it is suggested that the absence of the E-phenomenon was due primarily to adequate contact cues and kinesthetic cues. The data also makes it clear that vestibular information is not required for veridical perception of the visual horizontal under these experimental conditions. (Author).

Download or read book Visual Horizontal Perception in Relation to Otolith Function written by Earl F. Miller (II) and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To determine the influence of the otolith organs on visually perceived direction of space the constant and variable errors of normal persons and deaf persons with bilateral labyrinthine defects during nineteen positions of body tilt within plus or minus 90 degrees of gravitational vertical were compared. The general perceptual pattern was similar for the two groups, although that of the labyrinthine-defective group was found to be more variable, and greater E- and A-effects were manifested during several of the tilt positions. A significantly larger E-effect was observed in those subjects (L-Ds) with little or no ocular counterroll. (Author).

Download or read book Vestibular System Part 2 Psychophysics Applied Aspects and General Interpretations written by H.H. Kornhuber and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 686 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The function of the vestibular system is not as obvious as those of vision, hearing, touch or smell. Vestibular dysfunction, however, is clearly apparent where lesions are present. It is probably for this reason that the vestibular sense was not discovered until the nineteenth century and that clinicians have continued to playa major role in basic vestibular research right up to the present. The relationship between basic and clinical research is certainly stronger in the vesti bular field than in that of tactile sensation, for instance, as testified by the work of clinicians as MENIERE, BREUER, BARANY, DEKLEIJN and FRENZEL. In this respect the situation is similar in vestibular physiology and in endocrinology, and for the same reason. This second part of the vestibular volume of the Handbook of Sensory Physio logy will be of interest to neurologists, otologists, neurosurgeons, ophthalmologists and physiotherapists on the one hand, and psychologists, physiologists, engineers and aviation specialists on the other. For a full understanding of Part 2, it is necessary to have assimilated the basic anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry of Part 1.
