Book excerpt: One of America's preeminent psychiatrists draws on his famous Study of Adult Development to give us an exhilarating look at how the mind's defenses work. What we see as the mind's trickery, George Vaillant tells us, is actually healthy. What's more, it can reveal the mind at its most creative and mature, soothing and protecting us in the face of unbearable reality, managing the unmanageable, ordering disorder. And because creativity is so intrinsic to this alchemy of the ego, Vaillant mingles his studies of obscure lives with psychobiographies of famous artists and others--including Florence Nightingale, Sylvia Plath, Anna Freud, and Eugene O'Neill.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With a new chapter This new edition of Herbert Fingarette's classic study in philosophical psychology now includes a provocative recent essay on the topic by the author. A seminal work, the book has deeply influenced the fields of philosophy, ethics, psychology, and cognitive science, and it remains an important focal point for the large body of literature on self-deception that has appeared since its publication. How can one deceive oneself if the very idea of deception implies that the deceiver knows the truth? The resolution of this paradox leads Fingarette to fundamental insights into the mind at work. He questions our basic ideas of self and the unconscious, personal responsibility and our ethical categories of guilt and innocence. Fingarette applies these ideas to the philosophies of Sartre and Kierkegaard, as well as to Freud's psychoanalytic theories and to contemporary research into neurosurgery. Included in this new edition, Fingarette's most recent essay, "Self-Deception Needs No Explaining (1998)," challenges the ideas in the extant literature.

Book It s Time to Choose Your Ego Or You

Download or read book It s Time to Choose Your Ego Or You written by Trey Free and published by . This book was released on 2020-08-28 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Something is living inside each of us, but it is not our true selves. It is a version of us we created in our youth to protect our vulnerable inner beings from the threats of the outside world. It is a version of us we are feeding and strengthening every single day... but we don't realize we are doing it. It spends all its time and energy creating a world of deception around us. A world so authentic and addicting that we have forgotten how to find our way back home. A world where we move mountains to keep this being alive while we willingly neglect our true inner selves, leaving them to starve. Our egos are arguably the most destructive forces on the planet. If we look at many of the major issues that are plaguing us in our modern context, you can most certainly trace their roots back to peoples' egos and our blind obedience to this internal master driving our behavior. Our egos limit us in so many ways. They distract us from enjoying the present moment by ensuring we are always ruminating on the past or anxiously fearing the future. They limit our performance by injecting fear into our thoughts at the moments we need a clear head. They decimate our relationships by seeking self-aggrandizement instead of authentic connections. Therefore, we must ask ourselves the following questions: 1. Am I awake to the deceptions of my self-generated ego?2. Do I recognize the reality I am experiencing is a fictional world created to ensure my ego survives and thrives? I have been on a 11-year journey to confront my ego and remove its stranglehold over my life. This book reveals major pieces of that journey in a unique way. We will start by attaching a 365-pound bundle to me and jumping it out of a plane at 13,000 feet; we will discover hidden signposts that nudged me towards the path that leads back home; we will uncover the brutal 2200-mile Appalachian Trail arena that pitted me against my ego for hours, days, weeks, and months on end, showcasing just how intertwined and deceptive my ego was inside my life; and much, much, more. I created this book to help shake more humans awake and rob more egos of the power they hold over the world we are living in. This book is for those who realize something is hiding underneath the surface of their everyday experience. It is a book for those desiring to find their path back home.

Book excerpt: Discover your true identity in Christ. Many of us live for the approval of others. We let the world decide who we are, or we look to those around us to discover who we think we’d like to be. The problem is that living for what people think of you is the quickest way to forget what God thinks of you. In Altar Ego, pastor and author of Winning the War in Your Mind Craig Groeschel will show you how to sacrifice your broken ideas of approval-based identity on the altar of God’s truth and become who you were meant to be in Christ. You'll learn how to: Expose false labels and selfish motives. Live according to God's higher values with a deeper confidence in His calling. Trade in your broken ego and unleash your “altar” ego as a living sacrifice to Him. Understand how God continuously shapes you into His vision of you. Once you know your true identity and are growing in Christ-like character, then you can behave accordingly with bold behavior, bold prayers, bold words, and bold obedience. Altar Ego reveals who God says you are, and then calls you to live up to it. Rather than living a timid, halfhearted, shallow cultural Christianity, you'll boldly live in the confidence of the God who believes in you.

Book Stepping Out of Self Deception

Download or read book Stepping Out of Self Deception written by Rodney Smith and published by Shambhala Publications. This book was released on 2010-07-13 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A prominent Insight Meditation teacher presents the Buddhist concept of “no-self” in an easy-to-understand way that will radically change your perspective on life Anatta is the Buddhist teaching on the nonexistence of a permanent, independent self. It’s a notoriously puzzling and elusive concept, usually leading to such questions as, “If I don’t have a self, who’s reading this sentence?” It’s not that there’s no self there, says Rodney Smith. It’s just that the self that is reading this sentence is a configuration of elements that at one time did not exist and which at some point in the future will disperse. Even in its present existence, it’s more a temporary arrangement of components rather than something solid. Anatta is a truth the Buddha considered to be absolutely essential to his teaching. Smith shows that understanding this truth can change the way you relate to the world, and that the perspective of selflessness is critically important for anyone involved in spiritual practice. Seeing it can be the key to getting past the idea that spirituality has something to do with self-improvement, and to accessing the joy of deep insight into reality.

Book Self deception and the Common Life

Download or read book Self deception and the Common Life written by Lloyd H. Steffen and published by Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 1986 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Self-Deception and the Common Life investigates the topic of self-deception from three points of view: philosophical psychology, ethics, and theology. Empirical evidence and an «ordinary language» analysis support the case that the linguistic expression 'self-deception' is literally meaningful and that the language of the common life can be trusted. After critically analyzing the cognition, translation, and action accounts, along with the contributions of Freud and Sartre, Steffen proposes a new synthetic «emotional perception» account, one that avoids paradox. Giving attention to relevant moral issues, he argues that self-deception is not immoral, but represents a peculiar form of akrasia. Finally, because theologians employ 'self-deception' to describe the cognitive component of sin, Steffen considers the logic of theological self-deception. His study seeks an «intimate acquaintance» with self-deception and exemplifies a method of analysis relevant to constructive theological inquiry.

Download or read book The Ego Tunnel written by Thomas Metzinger and published by ReadHowYouWant.com. This book was released on 2010-05-21 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We're used to thinking about the self as an independent entity, something that we either have or are. In The Ego Tunnel, philosopher Thomas Metzinger claims otherwise: No such thing as a self exists. The conscious self is the content of a model created by our brain - an internal image, but one we cannot experience as an image. Everything we experience is ''a virtual self in a virtual reality.'' But if the self is not ''real,'' why and how did it evolve? How does the brain construct it? Do we still have souls, free will, personal autonomy, or moral accountability? In a time when the science of cognition is becoming as controversial as evolution, The Ego Tunnel provides a stunningly original take on the mystery of the mind.
