Furthermore, the author develops a stochastic two-dimensional discrete-time Markov modeling approach that dramatically simplifies the understanding of delay-based congestion control protocols.

Book excerpt: The current diversity of transport services, as well as the complexity resulting from the deployment of specific transport protocols or mechanisms over the different services provided by heterogeneous networks, demand a novel design of the transport layer. Moreover, current and future applications will only be able to take advantage of the most adapted and available transport services if they are able to interact (i.e. discover, compose, deploy and adapt) efficiently with this advanced transport layer. The work presented in this book proposes a model-driven methodology and a service-oriented approach aimed at designing the mechanisms, functions, protocols and services of the next generation transport layer. The first part of this book presents the state of the art of transport protocols and introduces a model-driven methodology and an ontology semantic model implementation aimed at designing next generation transport protocols. The second part presents the UML-based design of a component-based transport protocol. An extension to this protocol based on service-component and service-oriented architectures is also presented. The third part presents various model-driven adaptive strategies aimed at managing the behavioral and structural adaptation of next generation autonomic transport protocols. The fourth and final part presents the design of a transport layer based on component-oriented and service-oriented approaches and integrating the autonomic computing paradigm guided by the semantic dimension provided by ontologies.

Future network protocols will be 4G defined over an entirely packet-switched network with digital network elements, high bandwidth and built-in network security. The bandwidth provided will be 100Mbps for stationary objects and 20 Mbps while in motion. 4G wireless networks will support global roaming and service portability across multiple wireless and mobile networks, for example from a cellular network to a satellite-based network to a high-bandwidth wireless LAN. TCP Performance degrades severely on a wireless link due to higher Bit Error Rate, Mobility, Limited Capacity, Non Uniform Error Profile and frequent Disconnections. We propose a new transport layer protocol for 4G Wireless Systems, compatible with the existing TCP/ IP implementations that combines the best of the currently proposed algorithms and our own new congestion control algorithm. We designed an optimized congestion control algorithm for the wireless link that provides connection oriented, reliable data service with graceful handovers and ability to recover from frequent disconnections. The protocol deals with high bit error rate by implementing split connections with local fast retransmissions. It uses Zero Window Advertisement to accomplish smooth handover under inter-wireless cell mobility. Several other methods have been proposed to overcome TCP-over-wireless faults including split-TCP connection, triple-acknowledgements and acknowledgment caching. Each of these methods improves the efficiency of TCP by improving a single fault aspect, while our proposal combines compatible improvements into an efficient and reliable protocol.

Book excerpt: The objective of this research is to investigate and develop an efficient and seamless data transport protocol for a heterogeneous wireless mobile network. In next-generation network, most of heterogeneous wireless mobile networks will be combined and complementarily constitute a hierarchical network. To integrate different networks, many challenging issues should be solved. In this thesis, an efficient and seamless data transport mechanisms are explored. We investigate the problems that the current transport control protocol (TCP) will experience within the heterogeneous mobile network. In a heterogeneous network, a mobile host experiences drastic changes in network condition during a session. Traditional TCP struggles with abrupt network changes by intersystem handoff and cannot work efficiently in this environment. We propose a TCP scheme to be tailored to the heterogeneous mobile network to support seamless data transport. In the proposed scheme, a TCP is informed the impending handoff events and works differently based on a handoff type. Simulation results present the proposed algorithm improves throughput, stabilizes data transmission rapidly, and provides a seamless data transfer. We also propose an adaptive resource management scheme within a 3G cellular network based on a users priority level to reduce the call dropping and blocking rates. In a heterogeneous network, a network that provides smaller bandwidth may struggle with handed-off calls being served with a higher bandwidth. Therefore, a resource management algorithm should be defined so that an ongoing call is not dropped by a handoff and provides seamless data transfer. We propose an adaptive resource management scheme based on downgrading the quality of some existing services in a 3G cellular network. We analyze the system capacity, call blocking rate and call dropping rate of the proposed algorithm, and simulate the performance variation of the downgraded traffic. The results show that the proposed scheme increases system capacity, and decreases the call dropping rate at the cost of small delay of the downgraded data traffic.

It presents firstly a study of interactions between two routing protocols (AODV, DSR) and two transport protocol versions (TCP New Reno, Vegas). After this study, we conduct some simulations to analyze the behavior of these protocols with different node mobility and network load values. The performance results of each protocol are examined to identify our own scenarios in order to evaluate our proposed solution for better interactions between these protocols. This solution is called CL-TCP (Cross Layer TCP). It is an adaptation of the TCP congestion control mechanism with some parameters provided by the routing layer (mobility nodes and the size of routing length). After the evaluation of CL-TCP, the results showed that it significantly improves the interactions between TCP Vegas and AODV protocols.
