Book The Efficacy of Prayer

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Efficacy of Prayer: Being the Donnellan Lectures; For the Year 1877 There is, I suppose, no question in Theology the decision of which more deeply affects man's practical life than this - Has Prayer any effect beyond the mind of the person who prays? If this question be answered in the negative - if we arrive at the conclusion that Prayer has no external efficacy, it is plain that its internal efficacy must speedily disappear. No man's mind can be beneficially affected by the constant repetition of that which he believes to be a mere idle form. Indeed with such a belief he would soon discontinue the practice; and it is far better that he should. My object in the following Lectures is to examine the evidence on both sides of this important question. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Correspondence of Charles Darwin Volume 22 1874

Download or read book The Correspondence of Charles Darwin Volume 22 1874 written by Charles Darwin and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-03-05 with total page 1055 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is part of the definitive edition of letters written by and to Charles Darwin, the most celebrated naturalist of the nineteenth century. Notes and appendixes put these fascinating and wide-ranging letters in context, making the letters accessible to both scholars and general readers. Darwin depended on correspondence to collect data from all over the world and to discuss his emerging ideas with scientific colleagues, many of whom he never met in person. The letters are published chronologically: volume 22 includes letters from 1874, the year in which Darwin completed his research on insectivorous plants and published second editions of Descent of Man and Coral Reefs. The year also saw an acrimonious dispute between Darwin and St George Jackson Mivart as a result of an anonymous review the latter had written in which he criticised Darwin's son George.

Book The Many Sidedness of George Minchin Minchin

Download or read book The Many Sidedness of George Minchin Minchin written by Richard Hornsey and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-10-31 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first complete biography of George Minchin Minchin (1845–1914), professor of applied mathematics at the Royal Indian Engineering College. Minchin’s extraordinary range of accomplishments offers a unique inside view of the major technological and educational developments of late nineteenth century Britain. The scientific community’s excitement during the early days of electromagnetic theory, wireless telegraphy, and x-rays are revealed by Minchin’s letters to eminent friends (notably the Maxwellians, Oliver Lodge and George Francis Fitzgerald). This book also traces Minchin’s little-known pioneering work on photoelectricity, which led to the first electrical measurements of starlight and laid the foundations for solar cells and television. Minchin’s mathematical textbooks were praised for their lucidity, and his advanced pedagogical thinking underpinned his lifelong work on reforming science education. He explained scientific concepts for a general audience using science fiction poetry and critiqued contemporary society in sharp and humorous satires. These works provide fresh perspectives on the place of science in Victorian society. This book is for anyone fascinated by the late nineteenth century revolution in electrical technologies. This is also a valuable read for historians of science, and for those interested in technical education, and science and society in Victorian Britain.

This book was released on 2023-01-26 with total page 883 pages. Darwin depended on correspondence to collect data from all over the world, and to discuss his emerging ideas with scientific colleagues, many of whom he never met in person. The letters are published chronologically. Darwin died in April 1882, but was active in science almost up until the end, raising new research questions and responding to letters about his last book, on earthworms. The volume also contains a supplement of nearly 400 letters written between 1831 and 1880, many of which have never been published before.
