Book excerpt: "The purpose of this research was to examine the outcomes of a behavioral questionnaire and a performance based screening tool to determine the need for a formal (C)APD evaluation. The two tools used in this research were the Buffalo Model Questionnaire/Buffalo Model Questionnaire-Revised (BMQ/BMQ-R) and the Screening Test for Central Auditory Processing Disorders-3 (SCAN-3). This research was developed to determine if one of these screening tools refer more children for diagnostic central auditory processing disorder testing than the other."--page ii.

Book Clinical Applications of Continuous Performance Tests

Download or read book Clinical Applications of Continuous Performance Tests written by Cynthia A. Riccio and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2001 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first comprehensive guide to Continuous Performance Test techniques Continuous Performance Tests (CPTs) are used in the ongoing diagnosis and treatment monitoring of children and adults with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). In Clinical Applications of Continuous Performance Tests, three well-respected members of the behavioral assessment field discuss the clinical use and limitations of CPTs, as well as their diagnostic efficacy for disorders first evident in childhood and adolescence and those evident later in adulthood. This comprehensive handbook is the first to examine the similarities and differences of the numerous CPT techniques and their research literature. The four major instruments in use today are thoroughly reviewed (Conners’ CPT, Gordon Diagnostic System, Integrated Visual and Auditory CPT, and Test of Variables of Attention/Test of Variables of Attention–Auditory), along with a complete overview of their specific applications. Additional CPTs are discussed in the context of how modifications to the CPT paradigm can affect results and, subsequently, interpretation. Brain-behavior correlates of CPT scores and the use of CPTs for monitoring effectiveness of treatment approaches are also covered in depth. For psychologists, psychiatrists, and neurologists who diagnose and treat ADHD, Clinical Applications of Continuous Performance Tests is a unique and invaluable resource. Examines and compares four major, commercially available CPTs Includes guidelines for clinical practice and application Provides basic neuroscience underlying the CPT paradigms Explains how to monitor medication effects with CPTs Defines the relationship of CPTs to other cognitive and behavioral measures

Book The Relationship Among Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Learning Disability and Central Auditory Processing Disorder

Download or read book The Relationship Among Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Learning Disability and Central Auditory Processing Disorder written by Elana Lynn Miller and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Confusion and controversy regarding the definitions of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), learning disability (LD), and central auditory processing disorder (CAPD) have persisted despite their frequent use in classifying children in educational settings. Differential diagnosis of CAPD appears to represent a particular concern among a variety of professions, including audiology, speech-language pathology, psychology, and education. This study was conducted to determine if several assessment procedures addressing a child's academic, cognitive, and behavioural status would discriminate children identified with an attention deficit disorder, a learning disability, or a combination of these two disorders. We also attempted to determine if these children could be differentiated on the basis of their performance on measures of central auditory processing abilities. The test battery included the SCAN (a screening test for auditory processing disorders), the Auditory Continuous Performance Test (ACPT), the Children's Auditory Performance Processing Scale (CHAPPS), the Conners Parent Questionnaire, the Wide Range Achievement Test (WRAT-3; Reading and Arithmetic subtests), the Listening Comprehension subtest of the Wechsler Individual Achievement Test, and three subtests of the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children - Third Edition. The results indicated that there is a significant, though not mutually inclusive relationship between ADHD and CAPD. Moreover, a proportion of children in all three groups (NA, LD, ADHD) demonstrated auditory processing difficulties. Although there were significant correlations among tests and groups, there was also much variability within each particular group. An interdisciplinary approach to the identification of auditory processing disorders in children with learning difficulties was emphasized.

Book Guide to Assessment Scales in Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

Download or read book Guide to Assessment Scales in Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder written by Scott H Kollins and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-10-23 with total page 63 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive guide to the assessment scales, interviews, and questionnaires for ADHD for children, adolescence, and adults. Written by world-renowned experts in psychiatry, specifically in ADHD. Dr Conners’ work in this book is invaluable as he is the author of the most widely used assessment scales in the field. A follow-up of the 2003 first edition of the Guide to Assessment Scales in Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (also written by Dr Conners and Dr Kollins) Concise analysis of the most useful and popular scales assessing ADHD for children, adolescents, and adults. Explains how to most effectively use the top assessment scales in ADHD for children and adults in the context of a clinical practice Expert commentaries highlight the advantages and disadvantages of each scale, in addition to providing a discussion on how and when to administer them. Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is the most commonly studied and diagnosed psychiatric disorder in children, affecting about 3–5% of children globally and diagnosed in about 2–16% of school aged children. Additionally, it is a chronic disorder; 30–50% of individuals diagnosed with ADHD in childhood continue to be symptomatic in adulthood. However, with early diagnosis, medical management and behavioral treatment has been most effective when treating patients with ADHD at any age. Assessment scales are critical and essential tools for the diagnosis and treatment of patients with ADHD. This book has been designed to provide clinicians with a quick guide to the most effective assessment scales in ADHD for patients at any age. Additionally, the scales are used in clinical trials to evaluate drug efficacy.

Book Testing for Auditory Processing Disorder in Children Using New Normative Values

Download or read book Testing for Auditory Processing Disorder in Children Using New Normative Values written by Lauren M. Fong and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The auditory processing disorder (APD) test battery used for diagnosing children with suspected APD is variable across clinics. Suggestions have been made for clinicians to use a minimum core battery with supplemental tests as needed; however, agreement on specific tests to include in this battery has not been made (AAA, 2010; Jerger & Musiek, 2000). New normative data were obtained using a battery developed with the suggestions provided in the AAA (2010) position statement in mind (McDermott, 2014). It is well-known that the brain is complex; therefore, co-occurring disorders are not only possible but expected (Witton, 2010). The main aim of this study was to assess children with confirmed or suspected APD using the new normative data for test interpretation. Ten children, aged 7 to 12 years, with suspected or confirmed APD (SusAPD/APD group) were participants in this study. Their language, phonological processing, nonverbal intelligence, and attention were screened. The participants also received a hearing screening and a comprehensive auditory processing (AP) assessment. Case history revealed that nine of the 10 participants also had suspected or previously diagnosed co-occurring disorders. The SusAPD/APD group's scores (screening tests and AP tests) were compared to the scores of the control group (CG) consisting of 20 age- (+/- 6 months) and gender-matched children. Results of the screening tests revealed that the CG performed significantly better than the SusAPD/APD group on the Test of Nonverbal Intelligence, 3rd Edition (TONI-3) and Phonological Awareness (PA) subtest of the Comprehensive Test of Phonological Processing (CTOPP). The CG had better duration pattern test (DPT) scores for the right and left ears when compared to the SusAPD/APD group. The CG also had better mean scores for all screening tests except the IVA-CPT and for all AP tests in the temporal processing domain; however, this finding was non-significant. The use of the suggested screening tests will assist audiologists in making recommendations and modification to the AP test battery. The findings from this study also indicate the need for a larger sample size to further evaluate the sensitivity and specificity of the tests of AP used in this study.

Book Learning disabilities screening and evaluation guide for low and middle income countries

Download or read book Learning disabilities screening and evaluation guide for low and middle income countries written by Anne M. Hayes and published by RTI Press. This book was released on 2018-04-29 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learning disabilities are among the most common disabilities experienced in childhood and adulthood. Although identifying learning disabilities in a school setting is a complex process, it is particularly challenging in low- and middle-income countries that lack the appropriate resources, tools, and supports. This guide provides an introduction to learning disabilities and describes the processes and practices that are necessary for the identification process. It also describes a phased approach that countries can use to assess their current screening and evaluation services, as well as determine the steps needed to develop, strengthen, and build systems that support students with learning disabilities. This guide also provides intervention recommendations that teachers and school administrators can implement at each phase of system development. Although this guide primarily addresses learning disabilities, the practices, processes, and systems described may be also used to improve the identification of other disabilities commonly encountered in schools.

Book Hearing Equals Behavior Updated and Expanded

Download or read book Hearing Equals Behavior Updated and Expanded written by Guy Berard, MD and published by eBooks2go, Inc.. This book was released on 2014-01-10 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you are a parent or teacher working with individuals who struggle to process auditory and sensory information, you will find that this book offers new understanding of these problems, and most importantly, explains the intervention called Berard auditory integration training (AIT). This 10-hour training program reorganizes the dysfunctional auditory and sensory center so the brain no longer gets overloaded with confusing information. Berard AIT is regarded as the most effective approach available for enhancing listening skills, language, learning, sound tolerance, and sensory modulation. Evaluation of learning and behavior difficulties should include how the individual hears. Are there distortions, timing delays, misperceptions, sequencing problems? These disruptions will interfere with processing until the auditory system is reorganized and balanced. Pre- and post-test data provided in this book demonstrates the types of improvements that may be observed after this 10-day retraining program. Readers will understand how listening and learning can "switch on" when the auditory system is rebalanced and functioning effectively. Studies show that this short-term intervention leads to long-term achievement when distortions, timing delays, and misperceptions in processing are eliminated. This 300-page book explains the concepts underlying Dr. Berard's method and how he developed his retraining program through years of detailed clinical observations. Professionals familiar with Berard AIT recommend his program for those struggling with learning and behavior.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Not long ago, conventional wisdom held that ADHD was a disorder of childhood only—that somewhere during puberty or adolescence, the child would outgrow it. Now we know better: the majority of children with the disorder continue to display symptoms throughout adolescence and into adulthood. It is during the teen and young adult years that the psychological and academic needs of young people with ADHD change considerably, and clinical and campus professionals are not always sufficiently prepared to meet the challenge. College Students with ADHD is designed to bring the professional reader up to speed. The book reviews the latest findings on ADHD in high school and college students, assessment methods, and pharmacological and nonpharmacological interventions. Practical guidelines are included for helping young adults make the transition to college, so they may cope with their disorder and do as well as possible in school and social settings. Coverage is straightforward, realistic, and geared toward optimum functioning and outcomes. Among the topics featured: - Background information, from current statistics to diagnostic issues. - ADHD in high school adolescents. - ADHD in college students: behavioral, academic, and psychosocial functioning. - Assessment of ADHD in college students. - Psychosocial/educational treatment of ADHD in college students. - Pharmacotherapy for college students with ADHD. - Future directions for practice and research. The comprehensive information in College Students with ADHD provides a wealth of information to researchers and professionals working with this population, including clinical and school psychologists, school and college counselors, special education teachers, social workers, developmental psychologists, and disability support staff on college campuses, as well as allied mental health providers.
