Book The Ecology of Invasions by Animals and Plants

Download or read book The Ecology of Invasions by Animals and Plants written by Charles S. Elton and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-03-10 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elton sought to articulate more explicitly his vision of an entire field of invasion science. The 1958 book, aimed at an educated lay audience, was almost wholly descriptive, dominated by striking examples of the nature and scope of particular invasions beginning with the seven examples detailed in Chapter 1. From the materials in the proof copy and other sources, we can imagine a new edition would also have targeted biologists and been somewhat more technical and prescriptive. In autobiographical notes he penned near the end of his life, Elton wrote regarding EIAP, “This whole subject has deep significance for the study of plant and animal communities and their balance (or unbalance),”19 and indeed many of the reprints and notes refer to interactions among species and community-wide effects.

Download or read book Plant Pathology V3 written by James G. Horsfall and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 690 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plant Pathology: An Advanced Treatise, Volume III: The Diseased Population Epidemics and Control deals with the epidemics of the diseased population of plants and their forecasting and control. The book highlights the public health implications of plant pathology, giving major consideration to inoculum production, dispersal, and control. This volume is organized into 14 chapters and begins with an overview of populations of inoculum and the consequences of cultivation, emphasizing the inoculum potential. The next chapters focus on the autonomous dispersal of plant pathogens through the soil, seeds, or plant parts; the inoculum dispersal by animals, humans, air, and water; and the factors and processes that trigger an epidemic. The book also introduces the reader to the physical, chemical, and biological aspects of the performance of fungicides on plants and in soil, and then concludes by discussing the genetics of disease resistance and problems associated with plant breeding. This book is a valuable resource for those who are interested in a theoretical treatment of plant pathology and in the broad ecological relationships among organisms, as well as for research workers and advanced students of applied biology.

Book Exotic Plant Pests and North American Agriculture

Download or read book Exotic Plant Pests and North American Agriculture written by Charles Wilson and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 539 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exotic Plant Pests and North American Agriculture examines the threat posed by exotic pests introduced to North American agriculture. Organized into 17 chapters plus an epilogue, this volume begins with a historical overview of pest introductions, including insects and mites, and possible introductions in the future. It then discusses the impact of introduced weeds in North America; ecology and genetics of exotic species; how to detect and stop pest introductions; and research on exotic insects, plant pathogens, and weeds. The reader is also introduced to the use of exotic natural enemies for biological control of exotic pests, prediction of potential epidemics caused by exotic pests, insurance against exotic plant pathogens, and international cooperation on controlling exotic pests. Scientists, plant pathologists, ecologists, and those working in academics, government research laboratories, and regulatory agencies will benefit from reading this book.
