Book excerpt: The purpose of this research study was to compare the impact of Teacher-Set Accelerated Reader goals (TSAR) with Student-Set Accelerated Reader goals (SSAR) of fourth- and fifth-grade students. The goal of this research study was to determine which type of goal setting approach influences reading growth the most as measured by the easyCBM assessment. Student attitudes towards reading were also examined. While the results of a logistic regression provided little support for the idea that student's or his/her teacher's choice of the student's AR goals enhanced the student's chances of AR goal attainment, other analyses suggested that the student's choosing had positive effects. An OLS regression analysis of students' easyCBM posttest scores indicated that, controlling for prior achievement, easyCBM pretest scores, and other demographic variables, allowing the student to choose his or her own goals is linked to greater growth in reading. In terms of student affect, a similar sort of OLS analysis linked student choice of reading goals to improved attitudes towards recreational reading, but the link between student choice and improved attitudes towards academic reading was only observed among Grade 5 participants in the study.

Book excerpt: Schools in the United States have been using the Accelerated Reader (AR) program since the mid-1980s. A search of the literature related to the effectiveness of the AR program revealed that many of the studies were conducted more than a decade ago, and a large number of those studies failed to utilize a control group to provide comparative data. Researchers and educators have examined the use of the AR program, whose parent company is Renaissance Learning, for more than 20 years, yet there is still little definitive data on whether the system positively affects student reading comprehension and motivation to read. This causal-comparative design, in the form of an ex post facto study, examined two groups of fifth-grade students to determine if the addition of AR showed statistically significant effects on their reading comprehension. Data were gathered from both an experimental and a control group; the control group utilized the school system's literacy plan for reading instruction, while the experimental group utilized the literacy plan along with mandatory use of AR. Independent t-tests were used to determine if the treatment (AR) had any effect on reading comprehension by group or by gender. The results from the independent t-tests showed no statistically significant effect for reading method by group and no statistically significant effect for gender by group.

Book excerpt: The importance of creating lifelong readers has been always been a value to all teachers because it is critical factor that contributes to a student’s academic success. Accelerated Reader has been implemented among schools across the nation to engage students into reading and used as a tool to measure student learning in reading achievement. Research on Accelerated Reader reveals that the reading program has contradictory findings of having a positive and negative effect on students. A qualitative research design was used to investigate whether and how Accelerated Reader effects students’ perceptions as reader and attitudes towards reading. A total of 25 second graders provided qualitative data with responses to a survey and interview. Classroom observations were also made over the six-week period of the study. Analyses of student behaviors, responses, and comments led to identification of important themes related to the students’ experiences with Accelerated Reader. The results showed that Accelerated Reader did affect students both positively and negatively.

Limited data revealed that the study was inconclusive. However, the recommendation is that Accelerated Reader should be used as a supplemental source to create student success in reading comprehension and growth.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this research was to determine if personally communicating through weekly journal writing, students' goal setting, and allowing student reading choice affected attitudes toward reading in fifth grade students. Specifically, the study looked at the difference between high-achieving and low-achieving students in reading in a mid-sized school district in the Midwest United States. Students completed a questionnaire at the beginning and end of the research period asking them to rate their attitude toward reading among other questions. The results determined how the following interventions affected attitudes toward reading. The study was structured around students' weekly journal writing about their independent reading books and the investigator's personal response to each student. Students also set a goal of how many books they thought they could read during their fifth grade year, with specific literature genre requirements. Allowing student reading choice was also a large component of the study. Through careful analysis of the study results, the goals of the study were validated. When comparing the baseline data to the intervention data, the students' attitudes toward reading improved through the use of weekly letter writing, student choice, and goal setting.

In the United States, many students who struggle with reading comprehension are not receiving high-quality instruction that ensures comprehension of text. Elementary teachers are faced with the challenge of how to structure and organize literacy instruction that ensures growth in reading comprehension for struggling students. The purpose of this case study is to explore the impact of a reading framework on fourth grade struggling students' reading comprehension, attitudes and engagement. This case study looks specifically at the impact of the Daily 5 and CAFÉ literacy framework that seems to respond to the needs of struggling students and includes Oregon state standards in literacy. The fundamental research questions that guided this study are: (a) How do struggling students perceive their experience in Daily 5 and CAFE reading framework, (b) How do struggling students respond to the comprehension strategies taught in the Daily 5 and CAFÉ reading framework, (c) What are struggling students' attitudes toward reading, and (d) What kind of growth in reading comprehension did the struggling students have over one year? This case study used a constructivist and transactional theoretical lens. Data collected include: interviews, surveys, questionnaires, Draw-a-Reader, journals, and achievement tests. The main finding indicates that fourth grade struggling students made progress in reading comprehension when they engaged in Daily 5 and CAFÉ framework. In addition, findings indicate that their progress was facilitated by certain conditions: (a) letting students choose their reading and writing materials, (b) helping student select explicit reading goals, (c) setting up a positive and supportive classroom environment, and (d) offering opportunities for students to collaborate with each other while reading. The results of this study suggest that the Daily 5 and CAFÉ combined literacy framework benefits struggling readers by producing positive results in reading comprehension as well as contributing to better student attitudes and increased student engagement. With the ever-increasing importance placed on United States National Common Core Standards and Smarter Balanced Assessments as well as the need to address the reading challenges for struggling readers, the Daily 5 and CAFÉ combined literacy framework offers hope for students and teachers alike.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine what effects a college and elementary student supplemental independent reading partner project had on the attitudes, word attack skills, and reading comprehension of average fourth grade readers. The study involved 52 fourth graders who had scored in the third quintile on the reading subtest of the Missouri Mastery Achievement Test at the end of the third grade. All elementary students involved in the study were pre-tested and posttested through administrations of the Elementary Reading Attitude Survey and the Word Attack and Passage Comprehension subtests of the Woodcock-Johnson Psycho-Educational Battery Revised . The 26 students making up the treatment group were assigned college reading partners who met with them twice a week for a half-hour period of recreational reading. The other 26 students, the control group, received only regular classroom instruction. The data in this study were analyzed using analysis of covariance. The posttest means were compared using pretest scores as the covariate and posttest scores as the dependent variable. Results of the analysis revealed a significant improvement in the academic reading attitude, the recreational reading attitude, and the word attack scores of the treatment group when compared to the control group. The improvement in passage comprehension of the treatment group when compared to that of the control group was not statistically significant, but was approaching significance. On the basis of this study it can be concluded that a college-elementary reading partnership which focuses on recreational reading can improve the reading attitudes, word attack skills, and passage comprehension of the average fourth grade reader.
