In stark contrast to traditional university-based teacher education, schemes characterised as fast track provide would-be teachers a greatly accelerated programme of study and practical experience for gaining entry to teaching in schools. Within a wide variety of alternative routes for teacher training and eventual certification (credentialing), so-called fast track programs have been one of the more visible and aggressively developed and marketed schemes over the last twenty-five years. Initially conceived and developed as Teach For America, similar fast track teacher education programs are now also established as Teach First UK and Teach For Australia, and such a scheme is currently under negotiation and development as Teach First New Zealand. TFA schemes have been established in some 18 countries around the world.

Book excerpt: According to the No Child Left Behind Act, all teachers have to be highly qualified by the end of the 2005-2006 school year. High rates of mathematics and science teacher attrition makes reaching the goal of having highly-qualified teachers in each classroom quite challenging. High teacher attrition rates negatively impact students, teachers, schools, and school districts. The purpose of this study is to analyze the effects of The Center for New Teacher Success (the Center), a math and science teacher induction program, on novice mathematics and science teacher retention in a large, urban school district. Independent sample t-test were conducted to determine if there was a difference in retention rates between novice teachers served by the Center and retention rates for the District. Results indicate that Center participants remained teaching in the District at significantly higher levels than non-participants (p=.05). Multivariate logistic regression was used to determine if there was a difference in factors of novice teachers served by the Center that returned after their first year of teaching and those that left during and after their first year. Results indicate the largest increase in likelihood that a teacher would return for their second year of teaching was meeting with a Master Teacher at least nine times throughout the course of the year. Survey analysis was used to assess which aspects of the Center that participants felt were beneficial to their teaching practices. Center participants reported beneficial aspects of the Center include receiving individualized support from Master Teachers, participating in professional development opportunities, and the availability of teaching resources. Through the implementation of thorough induction programs, new teachers will remain in the profession longer, allowing them to further develop the skills and knowledge needed to reach proficiency and maximize student performance.

Book excerpt: This dissertation examined the Beginning Teacher Induction Program of a rural school system in North Carolina. The effects of mentoring, induction sessions, administrative support, ongoing staff development, and other support offered at the system level to beginning teachers were carefully analyzed. -- The researcher used eight themes based on the objectives of the school system's Beginning Teacher Support Program: improving beginning teachers' skills and performance; supporting teacher morale; communications; collegiality; building a sense of professionalism and positive attitude; facilitating a smooth transition into the first and second years of teaching; putting theory into practice; preventing teacher isolation; building self-reflection; and retaining quality teachers. All data were categorized into four primary domains: personal, management, instructional, and socialization. The researcher found that mentoring, need-based professional development, and administrative support are critical for effective induction programs. Data were gathered from stakeholders through interviews, focus group discussions and surveys, and were analyzed for frequency of the themed responses. -- Recommendations for further research are included based on an analysis of the data revealed in this study. Disaggregation of the data in this study determined support is successful in reducing the attrition rate for beginning teachers in the school system.
