Book excerpt: This report examines the effects of both student and school characteristics on mathematics and science achievement levels in the third, seventh, and eleventh grades using data from the 1985-86 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP). Analyses feature hierarchical linear models (HLM), a regression-like statistical technique that addresses the problem of students nested within schools by directly modeling within- and between-schools variation in achievement. Additionally, HLM allows examination of the impact of school characteristics on the relationship between student characteristics and achievement within schools. Following an executive summary, this report contains: (1) an introduction including information on the background and purpose of the study, a description of data sources and variables used in the analyses, and an outline of the methodological approach utilized; (2) a summary of the effects of school characteristics on mathematics achievement for each of the three grades with respect to the within-school model and the five between-school models; (3) a summary of the effects of school characteristics on science achievement for each of the three grades with respect to the within-school model and the five between-school models, enlarged with a comparison of mathematics and science results; (4) an extensive discussion of the findings in relation to methodological goals, grade level differences, school size, disassociation of socio-economic influences from race-ethnicity, tracking, gender differences, and teacher characteristics; and (5) appendices that include technical notes for the variables and the HLM methodology, descriptive statistics for selected characteristics, and supporting tables for the HLM results. In general, the school characteristics examined in the analyses provided better explanations for average achievement between schools than they did for the effects of gender, race-ethnicity, and socioeconomic status on achievement. Book excerpt: Social factors surrounding critical transition periods, school and class size, and grade configuration at the elementary level greatly impact current and future student performance. The expectation is that all of these factors are standard among schools, but in reality, every school is different; therefore, the potential for inconsistent quality of learning exists. This causal-comparative study explored the difference etween school size, grade span configuration, and transitions associated with a district’s seven elementary feeder schools in a small county in rural Western North Carolina. Differences in student performance, in both reading and math, at the elementary, middle, and high school level, as well as graduation rates, were examined for ties to the identified feeder school. The elements of teacher quality, teacher turnover, and principal turnover were explored as potential variables in student performance. An ex-post facto statistical analysis utilizing t-tests provided an exploration of feeder school characteristics and which feeder schools are more likely to produce successful academic achievement and graduation from high school. The data analysis revealed no statistically significant difference among students who experienced fewer transitions in their school career in regard to reading performance. However, the students who attended a Pre-K through grade eight school had higher mean scores in math than the students who attended a Pre-K through grade five school. Although no statistically significant difference was found between the school configuration and successful graduation, it was noted that students who did not attend any elementary school in the district had a much higher dropout rate.

Book excerpt: This causal-comparative study sought to identify the effects of attending a summer school transition program and students' grade levels (seventh v. eighth v. ninth) on students' grades (based on course failures), attendance (based on students' absences), and behavior (based on number of behavioral office referrals). The students who participated in this study were identified as at-risk during one of three educational transitions: from elementary school to middle school, between seventh and eighth grade in the middle school, and from middle school to high school. As part of their elementary school to middle school, intra-middle school, or middle school to high school transition program, students in the treatment group participated in a three-week summer program with academic classes in math, reading, and science, which their upcoming grade-level teacher taught. The goals of the summer transition program include familiarizing students with new academic structures and teacher expectations as well as previewing curriculum material for the upcoming school year. In order to compare the groups' data, the researcher used the chi-square analysis. While there was no change in students' grades or behavior related to participation in the summer transition program, statistically significant relationships did exist between grade level and attendance for eight and ninth grade students, as well as students who did not attend the summer school transition program. Grade level did not have a significant impact on the change in students' grades or behavior from one year to the next.
