Book The Heat Transfer and Fluid Dynamics of Concave Surface Curvature

Download or read book The Heat Transfer and Fluid Dynamics of Concave Surface Curvature written by and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The overall goal of this project is study convective heat transfer and fluid-mechanics in a concavely curved turbulent boundary layer. The objective is to identify the mechanisms whereby concavity increases surface heat transfer. Progress during the past year has centered on the recently added goal of studying the combined effects of moderate levels of grid-generated turbulence and concave curvature. Overall results from the fluid-mechanics section of the project are that grid-generated turbulence increases the skin friction, but does not alter the near-wall mean velocity scaling or the near-wall levels of the velocity fluctuations. The heat transfer measurements are showing that the Stanton number is increased by the grid-generated turbulence with the combined effects of curvature and the additional turbulence producing the largest increase. Keywords: Heat transfer, Turbulent boundary layers, Adaptive grids.

Book Effect of Transverse Convex Surface Curvature on Turbulent Fluid Flow and Heat Transfer

Download or read book Effect of Transverse Convex Surface Curvature on Turbulent Fluid Flow and Heat Transfer written by Man-Woong Kim and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effect of transverse convex surface curvature on turbulent boundary layer flow and heat transfer over circular cylinders, and on fully developed turbulent flow and heat transfer in concentric annular ducts with smooth surfaces are studied both analytically and experimentally. The analytical results are obtained through a turbulence model based on the variable von Karman's constants, $\rm\kappa\sb{i}$, proposed for the first time in the present study. A computer program is developed for calculation of the desired momentum and thermal characteristics. A numerical calculation using the standard k-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model, with a modified procedure is also carried out. It is assumed that the thermodynamic fluid properties are independent of temperature. An experimental study is conducted to study the effect of the transverse convex surface curvature of the core tubes both on fully developed turbulent flows and heat transfer in concentric annular ducts. Air is used as the working fluid. Three annuli having different radii of the inner cores, R$\rm\sb{i}$ = 3.98 mm, 8.57 mm, and 16.7 mm, with a fixed radius ratio of $\alpha$ = 0.3, are used over a range of the Reynolds number between about 20,000 and 60,000. The inner cores are heated electrically to provide constant heat fluxes throughout the test sections and are instrumented for the temperature and power measurements. The outer tubes are insulated to minimize the leakage of heat. In the case of the experimental study for turbulent boundary layer flows and heat transfer on circular cylinders, the experimental data of Willmarth et al. (31) and Kim and Lee (45, 46) are recompiled for the present study. It is seen that both the friction coefficient and heat transfer increase with decreasing value of the inner core radius of concentric annuli and the radius of circular cylinders, R$\rm\sb{i}$ It is concluded that, while the effect of transverse concave curvature on fluid flow and heat transfer is negligible, that of transverse convex curvature is rather significant.

Book The Effect of an Arbitrary Surface temperature Variation Along a Flat Plate on the Convective Heat Transfer in an Incompressible Turbulent Boundary Layer

Download or read book The Effect of an Arbitrary Surface temperature Variation Along a Flat Plate on the Convective Heat Transfer in an Incompressible Turbulent Boundary Layer written by Morris W. Rubesin and published by . This book was released on 1951 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An analysis was performed to determine the effects on the rates of convective heat transfer produced by arbitrary variations of the surface temperature with distance along a flat plate. The analysis was confined to the case of a low-speed turbulent boundary layer on a flat plate oriented parallel to the free-stream velocity. It was found that a continuously variable surface temperature has, in general, a smaller effect on the local convective heat transfer than does a surface-temperature discontinuity.

Book The Effects of Streamwise Concave Curvature on Turbulent Boundary Layer Structure

Download or read book The Effects of Streamwise Concave Curvature on Turbulent Boundary Layer Structure written by Albert H. Jeans and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concave curvature has a relatively large, unpredictable effect on turbulent boundary layers. Some, but not all previous studies suggest that a large-scale, stationary array of counter-rotating vortices exists within the turbulent boundary layer on a concave wall. The objective of the present study was to obtain a qualitative model of the flow field in order to increase our understanding of the underlying physics. A large free-surface water channel was constructed in order to perform a visual study of the flow. Streamwise components of mean velocity and turbulence intensity were measured using a hot film anemometer. The upstream boundary was spanwise uniform with a momentum thickness to radius of curvature of 0.05. Compared to flat wall flow, large-scale, randomly distributed sweeps and ejections were seen in the boundary layer on the concave wall. The sweeps appear to suppress the normal mechanism for turbulence production near the wall by inhibiting the bursting process. The ejections appear to enhance turbulence production in the outer layers as the low speed fluid convected from regions near the wall interacts with the higher speed fluid farther out. The large-scale structures did not occur at fixed spanwise locations, and could not be called roll cells or vortices. (Author).

Book Measurements of Turbulent Boundary Layer Growth Over a Longitudinally Curved Surface

Download or read book Measurements of Turbulent Boundary Layer Growth Over a Longitudinally Curved Surface written by Robert N. Meroney and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The result of an additional rate of strain on a turbulent parcel of fluid as it undergoes even mild streamline curvature can be very large. Until recently skin friction and heat transfer calculations have ignored this effect. Recent measurements over turbine cascades suggest that curvature influences heat transfer by an order of magnitude. In addition there exists a strong analogy between the effects of centrifugal body forces and the buoyance body force arising in density stratified flow in a gravity field. This note reports the results of a set of measurements of boundary layer development over convex and concave surfaces and compares the results with various turbulence models utilized in computational programs. A moderate curvature wind tunnel test section was constructed to examine the influence of curvature on boundary layer structure. (Modified author abstract).
