According to the Open Doors 2019 Report by the Institute for International Education (IIE), 341,751 students participated in post-secondary education abroad programs during the 2017/2018 academic year. This figure represents an increase of 2.7% of U.S. students studying abroad from the previous year. Research shows that education abroad provides students with opportunities not only to see the world but also to develop intercultural competence, which is increasingly crucial in the 21st century workplace. There are also numerous studies that show gains in autonomy, confidence, and tolerance for ambiguity in students who complete some type of study abroad experience. In sum, the education abroad experience in itself represents a powerful learning environment that continues to support personal and professional development long after returning home. Nonetheless, these learning environments must be cultivated along with faculty who develop and lead programs, as well as university partners and providers. Furthermore, education abroad programming and assessment is complex and must take into consideration many factors including academic goals, purposeful curricular development, and a balance between academics and leisure activities on site. This book explores the many aspects of education abroad as a learning environment, such as student learning outcomes, faculty development, and program assessment and evaluation. In addition, several chapters present education abroad experiences as a model for community engagement and activism. The authors represent a diverse range of institutions and perspectives and discuss programs around the globe. The book represents the voices of faculty that lead education abroad programs, students who participate in them, and also those of international students on a U.S. campus reflecting on their personal experiences abroad. Furthermore, this book contributes to the discussion of best practices to assist faculty and program directors in creating robust education abroad programs that meet the needs of their students and institutions.

This book, which presents the findings of a long-term evaluation project, provides the kind of systematic and comprehensive data needed to document and give future guidance to programs of study abroad. Using comparative measures, the authors examine the effects of overseas study in terms of education, career, personal satisfaction, and cultural values. Undergraduates in four U.S. college and university programs involving nearly thirty European institutions were chosen for the study. The focus of the research is the role of study abroad in students' acquisition of foreign language proficiency, knowledge of and concern for foreign cultures and international issues, attitudes toward their home country and its values, and career objectives and accomplishments. Student profiles indicate consistent patterns in motivation, achievement, and satisfaction that relate to the experience abroad. In their conclusion, the authors look at the implications of their findings in the context of our times and society and offer suggestions for some new directions for study abroad in the coming years. This analysis will be relevant for educational decision-makers, funding organizations, government, and the research community.

It is the thesis of this book that study abroad is one of the most powerful tools available for internationalizing the U.S. higher education curriculum. After an Introduction giving a general overview of the book, the study begins with four student case histories showing that an individual student's maturity and the extent of his or her immersion in the host country's culture are two key variables that determine to what extent study abroad affects the student. The next two chapters suggest first, that as they study abroad, students develop intellectually in three ways: (1) through language study; (2) through courses in the students' majors that offer new perspectives; and (3) through knowledge acquisition in broad, general areas: and second, that as they study abroad, students change in their perceptions of the host culture, their own culture, and global understanding. In chapter 5, a theoretical framework is proposed for understanding the effects of study abroad and the growth which results from it. The conclusion is reached that study abroad is not only a potentially powerful educational technique, but also that program design and participant selection can have significant effects upon outcome. Finally, a number of recommendations are offered whereby, it is believed, the effectiveness of study abroad programs in U.S. educational institutions can be increased and broadened. (LBG)

A review of literature in this area shows that little significant research addressed the effects of studying abroad upon students' openness to diversity. Further, most studies that have purported to measure study abroad outcomes have failed to use scientifically rigorous methods. This dissertation reports a quantitative study to determine what specific developmental outcome-in terms of openness to diversity-results from students at The Pennsylvania State University participating in an international education program or study outside the United States. The researcher compares measured results with those from a comparison group of students who remained in the United States.
