Book The Effects of Steady Three dimensional Perturbations in Boundary Layers

Download or read book The Effects of Steady Three dimensional Perturbations in Boundary Layers written by Raymond Sedney and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary purpose of this report is to survey the available information mainly experimental, on the subject. Most attention is given to the complex flow field resulting when a 3-D protuberance is introduced into a laminar boundary layer; less can be said about the turbulent case or 2-D protuberances because enough detailed, careful experiments have not been made. There are some features of the induced flow fields common to all speed ranges; applications range from flow in the atmospheric boundary layer to hypersonic vehicle problems. Some attempts to analyze the downstream flow are also summarized.

Book Steady Three dimensional Perturbations in Boundary Layers

Download or read book Steady Three dimensional Perturbations in Boundary Layers written by Raymond Sedney and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of three-dimensional boundary layers is synonymous with the study of cross flow or streamwise vorticity in the boundary layer. The research is concerned with the initial value problem for the 3-D boundary layer equations. Results are reported on exact solutions for the decay of streamwise vorticity, on a combined oil-flow--optical method of visualizing the surface flow field in the presence of 3D protuberances, and nonuniform behavior of the small crossflow approximation.

Book The Singular Nature of Three dimensional Perturbations of Boundary Layers and the Small Cross Flow Theory

Download or read book The Singular Nature of Three dimensional Perturbations of Boundary Layers and the Small Cross Flow Theory written by Raymond Sedney and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three-dimensional perturbations on two-dimensional boundary layer flows are considered. First initially induced perturbations are studied and a general solution obtained. Second a specific externally induced perturbation is discussed. In both the streamwise velocity perturbation becomes infinite but the cross flow decays as downstream infinity is approached. This implies that the small cross flow approximation is a singular perturbation. The basis for this lies in the fact that the nature of the equations is changed by the approximation, viz., the zone of dependence property is lost.

Book Seventh IUTAM Symposium on Laminar Turbulent Transition

Download or read book Seventh IUTAM Symposium on Laminar Turbulent Transition written by Philipp Schlatter and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-03-11 with total page 628 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The origins of turbulent ?ow and the transition from laminar to turbulent ?ow are the most important unsolved problems of ?uid mechanics and aerodynamics. - sides being a fundamental question of ?uid mechanics, there are numerous app- cations relying on information regarding transition location and the details of the subsequent turbulent ?ow. For example, the control of transition to turbulence is - pecially important in (1) skin-friction reduction of energy ef?cient aircraft, (2) the performance of heat exchangers and diffusers, (3) propulsion requirements for - personic aircraft, and (4) separation control. While considerable progress has been made in the science of laminar to turbulent transition over the last 30 years, the c- tinuing increase in computer power as well as new theoretical developments are now revolutionizing the area. It is now starting to be possible to move from simple 1D eigenvalue problems in canonical ?ows to global modes in complex ?ows, all - companied by accurate large-scale direct numerical simulations (DNS). Here, novel experimental techniques such as modern particle image velocimetry (PIV) also have an important role. Theoretically the in?uence of non-normality on the stability and transition is gaining importance, in particular for complex ?ows. At the same time the enigma of transition in the oldest ?ow investigated, Reynolds pipe ?ow tran- tion experiment, is regaining attention. Ideas from dynamical systems together with DNS and experiments are here giving us new insights.
