Book THE EFFECTS OF SPRAY PARTICLES FROM THE PENETRATION OF THIN TARGETS BY HYPERVELOCITY PARTICLES

Download or read book THE EFFECTS OF SPRAY PARTICLES FROM THE PENETRATION OF THIN TARGETS BY HYPERVELOCITY PARTICLES written by and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When a thin bumper target is impacted by a hypervelocity particle, a spray of particles is produced. Data are presented on the penetration of these spray particles into a witness plate for various bumper and witness plate materials, spacings, and bumper thicknesses. The exploding foil projection technique and associated diagnostics are also described.

Book An Investigation of Spray Velocity Resulting from High velocity Penetration of Thin Plates by Disks

Download or read book An Investigation of Spray Velocity Resulting from High velocity Penetration of Thin Plates by Disks written by John D. Di Battista and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An analysis based on one-dimensional shock-wave theory is presented to study the maximum velocity of the spray emanating from the rear surface of a thin meteoroid bumper. A set of experiments was designed to evaluate the analytical results. The targets used were 0.0025-cm-thick 11 aluminum foil and 0.041-cm-thick 1100 H14 aluminum plate. The projectiles used were made of tungsten and were disk shaped, 0.56 cm in diameter, and either 0.076 cm or 0.038 cm in thickness. The target and projectile dimensions used in the experiments insured that the one-dimensional assumptions used in the theory were valid. In addition, using a very dense tungsten projectile to impact the aluminum targets produced aluminum spray velocities well in excess of the tungsten projectile velocity. With this technique, the projectile and target materials were clearly differentiable in the spray. The experiments were conducted in the impact velocity range of 0.089 to 0.295 cm/micronsec. The ratio of maximum target-material spray velocity to projectile impact velocity is defined and is plotted against projectile impact velocity. The ratio predicted by using the theory agrees well with the experimental results in the range of impact velocities investigated. Representative series of photographs are presented and analyzed for the experiments conducted in both thicknesses of aluminum targets.

This book was released on 1995 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cratering and penetration behavior of annealed aluminum 1100 targets, with thickness varied from several centimeters to ultra-thin foils less than 1 micrometer thick, were experimentally investigated using 3.2 mm diameter spherical soda-lime glass projectiles at velocities from 1 to 7 km/s.

Book Cratering and Penetration Experiments in Teflon Targets at Velocities from 1 to 7 Km s

Download or read book Cratering and Penetration Experiments in Teflon Targets at Velocities from 1 to 7 Km s written by Friedrich Hörz and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Approximately 20 sq m of protective thermal blankets, largely composed of Teflon, were retrieved from the Long Duration Exposure Facility after the spacecraft spent approximately 5.7 years in space. Examination of these blankets revealed that they contained thousands of hypervelocity impact features ranging from micron-sized craters to penetration holes several millimeters in diameter. We conducted impact experiments to reproduce such features and to understand the relationships between projectile size and the resulting crater or penetration hole diameter over a wide range of impact velocities. Such relationships are needed to derive the size and mass frequency distribution and flux of natural and man-made particles in low-earth orbit. Powder propellant and light-gas guns were used to launch soda-lime glass spheres into pure Teflon targets at velocities ranging from 1 to 7 km/s.

Book Survey of Hypervelocity Impact Information

Download or read book Survey of Hypervelocity Impact Information written by Walter Herrmann and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the survey of high velocity impact information, a great deal of data was accumulated. Considerable difficulty was experienced in extracting original measured quantities, and originating laboratories were contacted whenever possible to supply tabulated data and additional information concerning material properties and measuring techniques. In some cases, such information was no longer available, and information was extracted from graphical data plots, and material properties corresponding to the material specifications were extracted from handbooks. The collected data are organized and presented under separate headings according to the projectiletarget configuration. (Author).
