Book excerpt: Objective: This systematic review aims to determine the effectiveness of social communication interventions for adolescents and young adults with autism when delivered via telepractice. Method: Three research databases were searched, yielding four studies that met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Inclusion criteria were published journal articles with adolescent or young adult participants with an autism spectrum disorder. The interventions used targeted social communication with an interventionist and needed to be conducted via telehealth for 50% of the intervention. Studies were excluded if participants had significant mental health diagnoses. Studies were also excluded if the intervention used a computer-based intervention or artificials intelligence. Results: PEERS was determined to be an effective intervention when delivered to adolescents via telepractice, as evidenced by two randomized controlled trials. Two other interventions were documented in the literature with positive results, though they did not show consistent generalization of learned social skills across non-treatment contexts, such as increased social outings. Conclusion: Telepractice is a viable method of delivery when teaching social communication. Participants were satisfied with the results of all interventions. Interventions should include a component meant to address generalization deficits.

Book excerpt: Research has suggested that youth with severe developmental disabilities (with and without ASD) benefit both academically and socially from inclusive school environments. The primary service delivery approach used for supporting the social, academic, and extracurricular experiences of adolescent students with significant developmental disabilities is individually assigned, one-to-one paraprofessionals and special educators. While this approach can serve an important auxiliary role in supporting these students' experiences, there is a stark absence of empirical evidence for this approach. Peer-mediated interventions have emerged as a promising alternative to one-to-one adult-delivered support models for improving academic and social outcomes for students with severe developmental disabilities. Research is needed that explores and describes the occurrences of social communication behaviors (SCB) that adolescents with severe disabilities exhibit and how their outcomes are influenced by peer-mediated interventions. The present study used data from a randomized control trial (RCT) to systematically: (1) explore and identify SCB occurrences among high school students with significant developmental disabilities with and without ASD; (2) explore and identify the SCB occurrences among high school typically developing students; (3) compare and contrast the SCB occurrences of both groups in relation to different student variables; and (4) investigate the quality of social interactions between typically developing high school students and high school students with DD before and after the implementation of peer-mediated interventions. Study data used direct observation event recording software and narrative recording. Results indicated statistical and clinical support for the peer support condition as compared to other treatment conditions in promoting various types of SCB among students with severe developmental disabilities, specifically those with ASD. A student's disability severity was found to modulate the occurrences general initiations exhibited by them. Little change was detected in social interaction quality attributes among disability groups between treatment conditions. Findings have positive implications for increasing SCB among students with DD who present with ASD. Findings have implications for assessing SCB and increasing social interactions and engagement among adolescents with severe developmental disabilities, specifically ASD, in general education settings.

The author and participant consider the video development and final product to be a success; however, until peer-reviewed efficacy studies that explore the effects of these intervention adaptations with young-adults with ASD are conducted, the author cannot assert that the intervention adaptations discussed will be effective therapy strategies for young adults with ASD.

It is known that communication deficits in individuals with autism may persist throughout the lifespan. However, there is a paucity of information in the literature pertaining to the communication needs of adolescents and young adults with autism. To meet the complex needs of these individuals, transition plans and programs must be improved. One way in which transition programs can be improved is by incorporating evidence based assessment and intervention methods designed for this population that target communication skills. Caregivers (n=68) of adolescents and young adults with autism anonymously completed a survey pertaining to outcomes, goals, and communication skills. Outcomes for the young adults were mostly poor and communication skill performance was variable. Results revealed that overall, caregivers perceived some communication skills to be more important than others. Caregivers rated the importance of communication skills differently depending on the social goals of the individual with autism. Results achieved significance for the relationship between developmental language level and the perceived importance of certain communication skills. Findings demonstrate that specific communication skills should be assessed and targeted during transitional planning for individuals with autism.

Book excerpt: Introduction: Parenting programs specific to autism are scarce and waitlists are long when available. Identifying alternate service delivery models of therapy and expanding options for intervention are needed to support caregivers in building relationships with their child. Objectives: To test the feasibility of the Modified Interaction Guidance (MIG) as an intervention to improve attachment between children with autism and their primary caregiver via telepractice. Method: Dimensions of feasibility used an embedded mixed method approach incorporating a single-subject design (n= 4 dyads) over 6 sessions. The PICCOLO, Goal Attainment Scale (GAS), Parenting Sense Of Competency (PSOC) were administered. Post-interview qualitative questionnaire explored the caregivers' experience with MIG. Outcome data was analyzed individually. Results: All participants (n=4 dyads) found both the intervention (MIG) and the service delivery model (telepractice) to be acceptable. Caregivers found implementation via telepractice easier and in some cases, preferred. The practicality addressed barriers and facilitators including time commitments, flexibility in timing of sessions, and recourses required to participate at home. All participants had adequate resources and felt time commitments and flexibility of sessions supported success and ongoing commitment. Conclusion: This is the first study to use the MIG intervention using a dyad with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) diagnosis and to deliver this intervention via telepractice. Overall, the intervention was feasible and acceptable. Qualitative data indicated that goals were improving, relationships were evolving, and attunement was developing.

Thus, school districts are in need of professional learning options that can be efficiently and effectively delivered to improve the procedural fidelity of interventions. The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the effectiveness of using telepractice to teach autism teachers how to contrive motivating operations to teach manding to students with ASD. By utilizing multiple baselines across participants design, four autism teachers in public schools received intervention support through an online module along with video models as well as direct performance feedback from autism specialists via video-conferencing. The primary dependent variable was the percentage of correct responses from the instructional procedures of task analysis, and the secondary measure was the subsequent rate of student mands. Data were analyzed both visually (i.e., through the study of behavioral patterns) and statistically (i.e., analysis of effect size). Results indicate that telepractice increased accuracy of both teacher and student target responses.

Book excerpt: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a developmental disorder characterized primarily by social skills deficits that can impair the individual’s ability to develop and maintain meaningful relationships. Research has shown that social skills training provides lasting improvement in social interactions. However, many factors can hinder the availability of intervention groups outside of major metropolitan areas. Individual online social skills interventions have been shown to translate to increases in everyday social skills, and while further investigation is required, current literature suggests that there is great potential for live, interactive online social skills groups to provide similar benefits to in-person intervention groups. Thus, online groups may be one solution to the barriers to accessing available resources. This study sought to explore the feasibility of conducting a live, interactive online social skills group by comparing two groups using the same curriculum; one in-person group that met in a lab on a local college campus, and one piloted online group that met through Zoom, a video conference platform, each for 14 weeks. Each group also participated in person in social activities on campus to gather preliminary generalization data. The online intervention was acceptable to therapists and participants, and a group of therapists who implemented both delivery models reported some advantages and disadvantages of an online format for social skills, expressing a preference for in-person delivery model when possible, but acceptability of online delivery where in-person groups are not available. The online model showed somewhat lower levels of participation, but slightly higher attendance rates than the in-person model. Understanding both the advantages and disadvantages to online social skills, clinicians can utilize the method the best fits their needs.

The disorder is characterized by persistent deficits in social communication, social interaction, and restricted, repetitive patterns of behavior, interest, or activities that together limit and impair everyday functioning. Research has shown that the use of visual resources, such as video modeling procedures, can support individuals with ASD to acquire and maintain a variety of daily living skills leading to enhanced levels of independence. A variety of technological devices have proven to be effective and efficient tools for the delivery of videos aimed at promoting independence among individuals with ASD while reducing the need for external prompts provided by others. As technology advances, devices have become more portable and, ultimately, affordable. Parents and caregivers have not only obtained these advanced technological devices, but actively seek to become more competent in using them to assist their children with ASD in a variety of ways. While there is ample research to support the use of portable devices to promote daily living skills for individuals with autism and other developmental disabilities, relatively few studies have examined whether parents can be trained to effectively deliver video prompting interventions through the use of mainstream devices. The current study sought to evaluate parent fidelity of implementing video prompting procedures using an iPad tablet as taught during a behavior skills training. Procedural fidelity was assessed utilizing a multiple baseline across participants' design to determine if their children with ASD, between the ages of 12 and 17, were able to acquire and master the steps of a targeted daily living skill. Results indicated that parents were successful in their implementation of the training procedures. Results also demonstrated that their children were able to correctly and independently complete the steps of their daily living skills with high accuracy while also self-fading the viewing of video prompts. Implications for parent training and future research are discussed.

Book excerpt: Although the social competence literature shows that individuals with HFA/AS can acquire social skills, these skills often do not consistently generalize into natural environments. Peer-mediated interventions have proven successful in teaching a number of social behaviors to individuals with ASD and have also shown to promote generalization and maintenance. The purpose of this study was to explore the efficacy of two peer-mediated interventions for three adolescent males with HFA/AS ages 12 and 13 in natural settings and the effects of these interventions on the generalization and maintenance of social skills acquired in a school-based social competence program. Using a single subject multiple treatments design the interventions were introduced and then compared to adjacent conditions. The results indicate that participants with HFA/AS made substantial improvements in social competence as a result of participating in the school based social competence program. There is also evidence that some skills acquired in the program generalized naturally to untrained settings. However, by training peers to deliver social interventions in natural environments, social interaction increased above natural levels found in baseline and above levels found during the social competence program alone. Finally, the results indicate that the peer mediated initiation intervention is more effective at eliciting social interaction with adolescents with HFA/AS than the peer mediated proximity intervention.
