Book The Effects of Simulation on Junior Level Baccalaureate Nursing Students Self efficacy and Intrinsic Motivation

Download or read book The Effects of Simulation on Junior Level Baccalaureate Nursing Students Self efficacy and Intrinsic Motivation written by Michelle E. Dykes and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author's abstract: Nursing education is experiencing a generational phenomenon with student enrollment spanning three generations. Classrooms cultures are changing today and include some Baby Boomers and large numbers of Generation X, Generation Y, and second-degree seeking students. These culturally diverse groups of students have unique sets of learning characteristics. Given the current challenges of growing student diversity, balancing budgets, and meeting faculty shortages, nursing schools are pressed to find alternative teaching methods that are not only cost and labor saving but also effective and equitable for the diverse student groups. This quantitative, experimental research design study explored the effects of the alternative teaching methods of human patient simulation (HPS) and virtual clinical excursion (VCE) on self-efficacy and intrinsic motivation of 126 culturally diverse junior level nursing students. The purpose of this study was to determine if these simulation activities were motivationally effective and equitable teaching methods for students of culturally diverse generation and degree. The Intrinsic Motivation Inventory (IMI) group mean score of the HPS group revealed significantly higher IMI scores than the VCE group. While many HPS subscale scores were higher, VCE scores were still on the higher end of the Lickert scale. The results did not consistently confirm that any one particular cultural demographic group benefitted more or less from either HPS or VCE experience. None of the main effects were significant for any of the general self-efficacy change scores. Only one interaction was significant: simulation type/degree status for the GSE score with midlevel degree type HPS students experiencing a largely higher mean gain in GSE between the first two assessments than those in the VCE experience. Culturally competent educators may use the findings of this study to begin a dialogue regarding appropriate simulation activities for the changing culture of nursing students. Results of this study indicated that, while overall IMI scores were higher for HPS than for VCE, both types of simulation were motivationally appropriate and effective teaching methods for all types of students, regardless of cultural demographic factors. In addition, GSE scores remained relatively constant, indicating that both types of simulation were appropriate and effective for all groups in this study.

Book Baccalaureate Nursing Students Perceptions of Clinical Judegment and Self efficacy Following High fidelity Simulation

Download or read book Baccalaureate Nursing Students Perceptions of Clinical Judegment and Self efficacy Following High fidelity Simulation written by Vicki Carol Pierce and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nurse education literature reflects that educators face a problem of how to provide meaningful clinical learning experiences that help undergraduate nursing students develop clinical judgment and increase self-efficacy. Many schools of nursing are incorporating high-fidelity simulation as an alternative clinical teaching strategy, yet there is little quantitative evidence to support the effectiveness of this teaching method in undergraduate nursing education, particularly regarding the development of clinical judgment. The purpose of this quasi-experimental time series design study was to explore the effectiveness of using multiple high-fidelity simulation experiences to increase perceptions of clinical judgment and self-efficacy in baccalaureate nursing students. Self-report data was collected following three different high-fidelity simulation experiences at three points in time. Data analysis revealed a statistically significant increase (p = .041) in students' perceptions of clinical judgment occurred between Time 1 and Time 3. Students' perceptions of self-efficacy also increased significantly from Time 1 to Time 3 (p = .003) and Time 2 to Time 3(p = .001). Regression analysis revealed a slight positive correlation (sig. = .003) between students' perceptions of self-efficacy and clinical judgment.

Book Globalization and Education

Download or read book Globalization and Education written by Jeffrey S. Brooks and published by IAP. This book was released on 2022-06-01 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Globalization and Education: Teaching, Learning and Leading in the World Schoolhouse explores the various ways educators’ work is influenced by globalization. This book presents topics and contexts traditionally marginalized in mainstream education research discourses and shows how local and global education issues are intersecting and shaping the ways in which ideas and practices are shared around the world. Each chapter presents an educational issue in an understudied international context, such as Saudi Arabia, Guyana, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Indonesia, Brazil, and Nepal. Topics range from how the knowledge industry shapes education in schools to the impact of globalization on school leadership, teaching, and learning. We invite scholars and practitioners to join us in the world schoolhouse, a place where discussion about educational understanding and improvement is not bounded by national borders, school systems or language. This book will both challenge and expand thinking about the complexities of education during a time of globalization and change.

This book was released on 2021 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nursing educators are increasingly utilizing high-fidelity simulation to provide realistic educational experiences to prepare students to enter the workforce. High-fidelity simulation is utilized with the belief when students encounter real-life patients they will be more confident in their ability to care for them. This quantitative study examined the effects of high-fidelity simulation on senior nursing students perceived self-efficacy and perceived practice readiness. The sample (N=48) consisted of senior associate degree nursing students at a community college in the Southeast. The findings showed high-fidelity simulation had a positive effect on students perceived self-efficacy and perceived practice readiness at certain points in the study, while other times not demonstrating a positive correlation. Implications for use of simulation as a teaching strategy in nursing education and recommendations for future research were proposed.

Book Exploring the Link Between Simulation and Self efficacy

Download or read book Exploring the Link Between Simulation and Self efficacy written by Donna Elder Beuk and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is estimated that over 30,000 applicants to registered nursing (RN) programs are turned away each year following a rigorous selection process for the limited available program admissions. An alarming number of those students who are accepted and enter upper division programs and depart prior to completion do so because of increased stress and anxiety experienced during clinical activities. Attrition occurs when students repeatedly experience levels of stress and anxiety and feel they have reached a breaking point. Self-efficacy impacts the amount of stress and anxiety an individual can tolerate before encountering negative outcome expectations. The theoretical framework for this study was underpinned by Bandura's (1995) theory of self-efficacy. A multi-case study approach and cross-case analysis was utilized to identify if a link existed between simulation and self-efficacy. Beginning nursing students engaged in a simulated clinical experience prior to the initial acute care clinical experience. Nursing students discoursed about physical and sociostructual influences on agency and environment related to self-efficacy and negative affective behaviors. Based upon students' discourse, this study supports a link does exist between simulation and self-efficacy for beginning nursing students.

Book Self directed Simulation

Download or read book Self directed Simulation written by Kristen Leigh Mattox and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Psychomotor nursing skills are a fundamental part of curricula for all schools of nursing no matter the degree level of the program. Demands placed on schools to produce a generalist nurse with the ability to safely practice in the clinical setting is high. There is no standard method of teaching or evaluation regarding psychomotor nursing skills, and there is much room for studies to demonstrate best practice. On top of the already mentioned high demands placed on schools of nursing are the demands of content-saturated nursing curricula on the students. Nursing students are placed under stress-producing situations that create high levels of anxiety. Schools expect students to perform at very high levels and to demonstrate competency of skills learned in a practicum setting. There is a need for best practice in teaching and evaluating psychomotor nursing skills. There is also a need for experienced faculty to teach the skills. The purpose of this exploratory study was to evaluate student levels of self-efficacy in the performance of psychomotor nursing skills after implementation of the learning strategy self-directed simulation. Self-directed simulation is a strategy created by the researcher in response to students' level of anxiety and uses theoretical knowledge of ways to decrease student anxiety and increase learning and retention. Self-efficacy was measured in 94 students from a Midwestern school of nursing who were enrolled in a fundamentals of nursing course. Additionally, the researcher conducted 14 qualitative interviews to further investigate the self-directed simulation strategy, self-efficacy, and learning.

Book Retention of Knowledge with High Fidelity Simulation

Download or read book Retention of Knowledge with High Fidelity Simulation written by Jaime L. Zinsmaster and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High-fidelity simulation is being used more for nursing clinical education and has received increased attention in nursing literature. Research has added to the knowledge regarding simulation development, evaluation, and implementation. The purpose of this quasi-experimental study was to add to the knowledge base regarding the influence of high-fidelity simulation on gain and retention of knowledge. Forty-four junior level baccalaureate nursing students participated in either a lecture only (n = 19) or lecture with simulation (n = 25) experience. The students were tested pre-intervention, post-intervention, and at 4 months utilizing a multiple choice knowledge evaluation test that was developed by the researchers. The results of this study demonstrate that although there was significant learning with the simulation and lecture experience over the lecture only experience (t = -3.39, df = 29, p = .002), there was not significant impact on the 4 month retention of knowledge between the groups (t = -.30, df = 42, p = .766). Simulation design was tested through the National League for Nursing simulation tools, including the: Simulation Design Scale, Educational Practices in Simulation Scale, and the Student Satisfaction and Self-Confidence in Learning Scales. The scenario was found to be well developed as compared to other pulished studies.

Book Student Nurses Perception of Self efficacy and Perceived Clinical Judgment Through the Use of Multi patient Simulation

Download or read book Student Nurses Perception of Self efficacy and Perceived Clinical Judgment Through the Use of Multi patient Simulation written by Laura J Corson and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New nurse graduates may be ill-prepared to care for multiple patients in the acute care setting due to limited clinical experience. Nurse educators must find ways of bridging the theory-to-practice gap. High-fidelity simulation is one mechanism for bridging this gap. This pilot study explored the effect of multi-patient simulation (MPS) on students' self-efficacy and perceived clinical judgment. This quasi-experimental study sought to explore the readiness of BSN students to care for multiple patients through the use of MPS and a self-efficacy survey measuring perceived level of confidence (LOC) in clinical care. Findings were inconclusive regarding whether MPS as a teaching method helped nursing students increase their perceived LOC and improve clinical judgment skills. Students agreed that the design should be part of nursing education and it identified gaps in their knowledge. This study raised an awareness of what students lack in terms of prioritization management when caring for multiple patients.
