Book The Effects of Self graphing and Feedback on the Quantity and Quality of Written Responses to Mathematical Word Problems

Download or read book The Effects of Self graphing and Feedback on the Quantity and Quality of Written Responses to Mathematical Word Problems written by Alecia A. Dole and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Education in the United States has undergone major changes over the last 15 years. Between No Child Left Behind and Common Core State Standards, teachers are under more pressure than before to achieve excellence with their students. This study looked to see if there was a relationship between a self-graphing plus feedback intervention and the quantity and quality of written responses to math word problems. There seemed to be a functional relationship between the two resulting in increases across the board in total words written and math vocabulary. Limitations, future directions, and implications for practice are all discussed.

Book The Effects of Self graphing on the Written Expression of Fourth Grade Students with Hight incidence Disabilities

Download or read book The Effects of Self graphing on the Written Expression of Fourth Grade Students with Hight incidence Disabilities written by Kate Elizabeth Pulley and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of self-graphing on the writing of fourth grade students with high-incidence disabilities. The subjects recruited were three fourth grade students with learning disabilities. The study took place in a charter school for students from kindergarten through fourth grade located in an urban area of Columbus, Ohio. There were three dependent variables measured in this study: total words written, number of correct word sequences, and number of correct punctuation marks. The primary dependent variable was total words written. The students were asked to write for 3 minutes in response to a story starter, and data were collected four times a week. During intervention, the students self-graphed the total number of words written during the writing prompt completed that day. Correct word sequences and correct punctuation marks were measured by the experimenter. Using a multiple-baseline across subjects design, a functional relationship was determined between the self-graphing intervention and the total words written as well as the number of correct word sequences in the students' writing. No relationship was found between the self-graphing intervention and the number of correct punctuation marks. Implications for future research and practice are discussed.

Book The Effects of Repeated Writing on Secondary Students Writing Fluency

Download or read book The Effects of Repeated Writing on Secondary Students Writing Fluency written by Carisa Marie Taylor and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: A multiple baseline across subjects design was used to evaluate the effectiveness of repeated writing, self-graphing of total words written (TWW), and feedback on the writing fluency of high school students with disabilities. In one experimental group, the individual components of self-graphing, repeated writing, and feedback were introduced cumulatively. In the second experimental group, participants moved directly from baseline condition to repeated writing with self-graphing and feedback. Results were mixed within and across groups. High variability was observed across participants and phases. Self-graphing of TWW was associated with an improvement in quantity and quality in two of three participants in Group One. Repeated writing was associated with an improvement in quantity with a decline in quality in all participants in Group One. Feedback was associated with a decline in quantity and an improvement in quality in two participants in Group One; a third participant showed the same effect but only one writing was conducted with feedback. A decline in quantity and an improvement in quality were also observed in one of four participants in Group Two. Indicators of social validity for the intervention were positive from participants and responding teachers and parents. Qualitative independent evaluations of overall writing quality failed to demonstrate improvement between pre and post-intervention responses as well as between first and second writings with self-graphing and feedback.

Book The Effects of Self graphing on the Writing Performance of Second Graders

Download or read book The Effects of Self graphing on the Writing Performance of Second Graders written by Lynn Dardig Heward and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Writing, an integral part of everyday life, is the most complex form of communication. For most people, proficient writing is necessary to function in school, the workplace, and the community. In school, writing is often the primary means through which students demonstrate their learning. The purpose of this study was to examine ways to increase writing productivity for elementary students. Specifically, a multiple baseline with an embedded reversal design was used to examine the effects of self-graphing and indiscriminable contingencies on the writing productivity of typically developing second graders. In general, there were minimal differences between experimental conditions for each student. However, for some students, evidence of a possible functional relationship was demonstrated for at least one of the dependent variables. Limitations, future directions, and implications for practice are provided in the discussion.

Book Effects of Self monitoring and Self evaluation on the Written Language Performance and On task Behavior of Elementary Students with Learning Disabilities

Download or read book Effects of Self monitoring and Self evaluation on the Written Language Performance and On task Behavior of Elementary Students with Learning Disabilities written by Yvonne L. Goddard and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: This study was conducted to determine the effects of self-monitoring (alone and in combination with changing criterion with public posting) and self-evaluation on the written language performance and on-task behavior of elementary students with learning disabilities. The subjects were seven elementary students enrolled in a private school for students with learning disabilities. Throughout the study, students wrote for 10 minutes each session. Self-monitoring procedures for written language performance included having the students count and record the number of words and sentences written. Self-evaluation involved the students evaluating the quantity and quality of their writing as compared to the last session. The changing criterion with public posting condition involved the experimenter and/or student setting goals for the number of words written, then posting these totals in the classroom each day. During all sessions, the experimenter collected data on written language performance, including number of words, sentences, different words, and adjectives written. For three students, the experimenter also collected on-task data each session.

Book Effects of Writing in the Mathematics Classroom

Download or read book Effects of Writing in the Mathematics Classroom written by Wojciech Kolc and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Writing in the subject matter is widely supported by authors and professional organizations. For example, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) lists communication, including writing, as an essential part of mathematics education in their Principles and Standards for School Mathematics (2000). The NCTM also states that students can use communications with peers, teachers, and others to organize and consolidate their mathematical thinking. In addition, effective classroom communications provide students with the opportunity to review, analyze, and evaluate the mathematical thinking and strategies of others so that mathematical ideas can be expressed more precisely. Similarly, Sutton and Krueger (2003) believe that reading and writing should be combined with mathematics at all times, and go on to state that the importance of writing in the mathematics classroom cannot be overemphasized. Aside from helping students to clarify their understanding of mathematics and improve their communications skills, writing also helps students to organize their ideas and thoughts more logically so that clear and coherent conclusions can be reached. The purpose of this study was to see if doing a significant amount of writing in a high school mathematics class will improve students' understanding of mathematical concepts. More specifically, the researcher wanted to know whether students gain more confidence and reduce their math phobia if asked to write about their difficulties and challenges when solving multistep problems and word problems. Additionally, this research focused on improving students' abilities to explain their reasoning behind required procedures. This study took place in a large urban high school in Connecticut. There were 51 participants of this study, all of them enrolled in Academic Geometry classes. Historically students in an academic track have been resistant when asked to explain their thinking and have avoided any kind of word problems. This investigation focused on students' attitude in math as well as their achievement. Although this study did not show any significant increase in grades on post-tests, students in the experimental group improved their ability to explain their reasoning behind required procedures and they gained more confidence when asked to solve word problems.
