Book How Feedback Affects Individuals with Academic Contigent Self esteem

Download or read book How Feedback Affects Individuals with Academic Contigent Self esteem written by Amanda Rose Freitag and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study explored the potential effects that may result to one's state self-esteem levels and affect when individuals with academic-contingent self-esteem receive success or failure feedback. The participants consisted of 92 college students who took the following tests to measure baseline self-esteem: Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (1965) and the Kernis Contingent Self-Esteem Scale (CSES; Paradise & Kernis, 19990 and the Contingencies of Self-Worth Scale (CSWS; Crocker, Luhtanen, Cooper, & Bouvrette, 2002). The students were then asked to complete a timed anagram task being told that this would predict future academic performance. Students were randomly chosen to receive positive or negative feedback on this test. All participants were then asked to participate in a filler task that was neutral in nature. The participants then completed the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS; Watson, Clark, & Tellegen, 1988) and the State Self-Esteem Scale (SSES; Heatherton & Polivy, 1991). In this study, it was found that affect and state self-esteem levels remained unaffected as a result of the feedback they received, regardless of the level of academic-contingent self-esteem.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Praise for the first edition: `The underlying philosophy of this practical book is that raising self-esteem in pupils (including dyslexics) will lead to achievement of higher academic results and fewer behaviour problems. This book is primarily for primary and secondary teachers but would provide much material for discussion among SpLD teachers, given the unexpected and controversial results of Denis Lawrence′s research′ - Dyslexia Contact `Many useful suggestions offered in this book about learning activities are likely to help pupils to feel better about themselves, to learn to respect others and to experience how feelings can be expressed safely′ - British Journal of Special Education Raising self-esteem in pupils can lead to the achievement of higher academic results and fewer behavioural problems. Outlining in simple terms what self-esteem is and providing strategies to support it in the classroom, this book includes clear explanations of the terminology and theory behind self-esteem, and lots of practical examples and useful activities for use with children. The book also covers the main issues surrounding the self-esteem of practitioners. It sets out tried-and-tested strategies that teachers can use to recognise and reduce stress and maintain their self-esteem. This new edition has been fully updated and now includes new case study material and activities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From foreword: Few psychological variables affecting the lives of children are given as much emphasis by mental health professionals and the general public as self-esteem. Psychoanalyst Harry Stack Sullivan viewed the concept of self as the "bedrock of the human personality," and a deterioration in self-esteem has long been associated by both clinicians and researchers with a wide range of difficulties - from depression and delinquency to eating disorders and school failure. The message has not been lost on parents and teachers, who constantly search for ways to improve the motivation and well-being of their children by helping them enhance their self-concept. As one popular book on the subject tells its readers, self-esteem is no less than the "mainspring that slates every child for success or failure as a human being." Careful observations of the child tend to reinforce the validity of such views-and thus the importance of this unusually rich volume.

Book excerpt: This unique and ground-breaking book is the result of 15 years research and synthesises over 800 meta-analyses on the influences on achievement in school-aged students. It builds a story about the power of teachers, feedback, and a model of learning and understanding. The research involves many millions of students and represents the largest ever evidence based research into what actually works in schools to improve learning. Areas covered include the influence of the student, home, school, curricula, teacher, and teaching strategies. A model of teaching and learning is developed based on the notion of visible teaching and visible learning. A major message is that what works best for students is similar to what works best for teachers – an attention to setting challenging learning intentions, being clear about what success means, and an attention to learning strategies for developing conceptual understanding about what teachers and students know and understand. Although the current evidence based fad has turned into a debate about test scores, this book is about using evidence to build and defend a model of teaching and learning. A major contribution is a fascinating benchmark/dashboard for comparing many innovations in teaching and schools.

This book was released on 2018-11-15 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together leading scholars from around the world to provide their most influential thinking on instructional feedback. The chapters range from academic, in-depth reviews of the research on instructional feedback to a case study on how feedback altered the life-course of one author. Furthermore, it features critical subject areas - including mathematics, science, music, and even animal training - and focuses on working at various developmental levels of learners. The affective, non-cognitive aspects of feedback are also targeted; such as how learners react emotionally to receiving feedback. The exploration of the theoretical underpinnings of how feedback changes the course of instruction leads to practical advice on how to give such feedback effectively in a variety of diverse contexts. Anyone interested in researching instructional feedback, or providing it in their class or course, will discover why, when, and where instructional feedback is effective and how best to provide it.
