Book Carry Over Effects of Elevated Salinity and Temperature on Wood Frog Rana Sylvatica Survival Growth and Behavior

Download or read book Carry Over Effects of Elevated Salinity and Temperature on Wood Frog Rana Sylvatica Survival Growth and Behavior written by Bernardo A. Traversari and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anthropogenically-induced salinization of freshwater systems due to the application of road de-icing salts and hydrocarbon mining has been identified as a significant environmental stressor for amphibians across the United States. While the effects of salinity during amphibian embryonic and larval stages are fairly well-understood, less is known on whether these effects can carry over to affect post-metamorphic traits. Moreover, it remains unclear if salinity-induced carry-over effects are adaptive or maladaptive for amphibian survival, or if salinity can interact with other environmental conditions, like temperature, to influence amphibian development. To fill in these gaps, we tested the hypothesis that if wood frogs that develop in saline ponds exhibit adaptive plasticity in their osmoregulatory abilities, then individuals raised in elevated salinity environments as larvae would feature greater tolerance to similarly saline post-metamorphic environments (i.e., the match hypothesis). In addition, we also hypothesized that exposure to elevated salinity and temperature during larval development would have measurable impacts on juvenile behaviors. Our results provided no evidence for the match hypothesis, as juveniles reared in high salinities did not survive or grow better in high-salinity soils compared with those in low-salinity soils. However, we do show that juveniles that experienced elevated salinity as larvae tended to increase weight (but not SVL) regardless of post-metamorphic environment, suggesting that there may be differences in food intake or osmoregulation in these animals. We also showed that the interaction between salinity and temperature experienced during the larval stage affects wood frog explorative capacity without necessarily impacting exploitative behavior, providing evidence for behavioral carry-over effects. Taken together, these findings contribute to a growing body of work to show that the larval environment can affect the expression of physiological and behavioral traits after metamorphosis, but how these traits relate to population recruitment still needs to be investigated. Findings from this study also suggests that salinization of both freshwater and woodland soils adjacent to roads has adverse effects on wood frogs in both the aquatic and terrestrial parts of their life cycle.

Book Principles of Thermal Ecology Temperature Energy and Life

Download or read book Principles of Thermal Ecology Temperature Energy and Life written by Andrew Clarke and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-09-08 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Temperature affects everything. It influences all aspects of the physical environment and governs any process that involves a flow of energy, setting boundaries on what an organism can or cannot do. This novel textbook reveals the key principles behind the complex relationship between organisms and temperature, namely the science of thermal ecology. It starts by providing a rigorous framework for understanding the flow of energy in and out of the organism, before describing the influence of temperature on what organisms can do and how fast they can do it. With these fundamental principles covered, the bulk of the book explores thermal ecology itself, incorporating the important extra dimension of interactions with other organisms. An entire chapter is devoted to the crucially important subject of how organisms are responding to climate change. Indeed, the threat of rapid climatic change on a global scale is a stark reminder of the challenges that remain for evolutionary thermal biologists, and adds a sense of urgency to this book's mission.

Book Physiology of the Amphibia Volume 2

Download or read book Physiology of the Amphibia Volume 2 written by Lofts and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 609 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physiology of the Amphibia, Volume II focuses on the various aspects of amphibian reproduction, both physiological and behavioral, and the interrelationship between these mechanisms and the environment. Organized into five chapters, the book begins with the integrative functions of the amphibian brain. It then describes the cytophysiology of the amphibian adenohypophysis, as well as their reproductive organs and associated sexual structures. It also discusses the physiology of the process of yolk formation, vitellogenesis. The reproductive and courtship patterns and intersexuality among amphibians are also described. This book will be useful to general biologists as a reference source and to students with interests in animal physiology.

Book Bivalvia Through Reptilia

Download or read book Bivalvia Through Reptilia written by T Pandian and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 646 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Animal Energetics, Volume 2: Bivalvia through Reptilia is part of a two-volume treatise focusing on the integrated picture of the energy transformation process at the organismic level. Since it is almost impossible to restrict meaningful discussions to only one level of organization, some reference is made to population energetics as well as to the suborganismic level. The bioenergetics of both vertebrate and invertebrate groups are discussed. Specifically, the bioenergetics of bivalves, gastropods, bryozoans, pogonophorans, echinoderms, lower chordates, fishes, amphibians, and reptiles are covered. Understanding the efficient and fast transformation of biological energy has become an important issue in world affairs; studies on energetics and growth of thermoconformers can therefore be expected to expand greatly in the future. This book aims to provide many keys to a broader understanding of biology as well as open untrodden avenues to biologists with the quest for newer energy sources and efficient methods of energy utilization.

Download or read book Thermal Adaptation written by Michael James Angilletta and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2009-01-29 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Temperature impacts the behaviour, physiology and ecology of all organisms more than any other abiotic variable. In this book, the author draws on theory from the more general discipline of evolutionary ecology to foster a fresh approach toward a theory of thermal adaptation.
