Download or read book Activating ESL Students Schemata to Improve Reading Comprehension written by Chin-Yi Chen and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The purpose of this thesis is to examine the effect that background knowledge has on memory and comprehension of reading passages. In addition, reading comprehension occurs when readers activate existing knowledge so that new ideas can be incorporated in their cognitive structure. The thesis is divided into four main parts. The first part introduces the educational system in Taiwan and Taiwanese students' problems in reading English. The second part is a review of literature concerning schema functions and types. Also, in the schema-theoretic views of reading, the process of comprehension, script and memory are interpreted. Coady's and Goodman's psycholinguistic views of reading are introduced. The third part offers classroom applications, materials, and discussion concerning the importance of activating students' schemata or (prior knowledge) and suggests some schema-inducing methods and strategies to improve reading comprehension. Finally, a curriculum proposed for the teaching of Russell Freedman's biography, Eleanor Roosevelt: A Life of Discovery (1993) is appended. The daily lesson plans suggest ways to activate students' background knowledge to achieve reading comprehension competence"--Document.

Book The Effect of Cultural Schema on Secondary English Learner Reading Comprehension

Download or read book The Effect of Cultural Schema on Secondary English Learner Reading Comprehension written by Caroline Kezmoh Dutton and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study the role of cultural schema in secondary English learners' reading comprehension of a period-specific text was observed and measured through multiplechoice and fill-in testing. Spanish speaking English learners at the high school level, who were either born in the United States or Mexico, with varying levels of English language proficiency, were the focus of this study. Upon conclusion of the study, English learners born in the United States and with higher language proficiency levels had the highest comprehension scores. The group read Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet while the teacher used targeted instruction to construct cultural schema needed to comprehend the text. All groups improved their comprehension with the introduction of targeted instruction of cultural schema. However, the only statistical significance was found in the analysis of language proficiency and reading comprehension. These findings suggested that English learners' reading comprehension is affected by language proficiency, but further research is needed to understand the connection between cultural schema and reading comprehension.

Book The Effect of Content Schema on the Reading Comprehension of Foreign Language Learners in the Chinese EFL Context

Download or read book The Effect of Content Schema on the Reading Comprehension of Foreign Language Learners in the Chinese EFL Context written by Jia Li and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reading comprehension is a complex interactive process of forming meaning through relating what is encountered in the text to what the reader already knows. Schema theory describes the process by which readers combine their own background knowledge with the information in a text to comprehend that text. Previous research in the effect of content schema on both first and foreign language reading comprehension has provided empirical support for the hypotheses that content schema, either topic or cultural specific, has a significant impact on reading comprehension and content-based pre-reading activities can facilitate reading. However, few studies which focus on Chinese English as a Foreign Language (EFL) context have been done, especially at college level. The present study investigated the effect of content schema on Chinese EFL students reading comprehension.

Book The Routledge Handbook of Adoption

Download or read book The Routledge Handbook of Adoption written by Gretchen Miller Wrobel and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-02-17 with total page 571 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adoption is practiced globally yielding a multidimensional area of study that cannot be characterized by a single movement or discipline. This handbook provides a central source of contemporary scholarship from a variety of disciplines with an international perspective and uses a multifaceted and interdisciplinary approach to ground adoption practices and activities in scientific research. Perspectives of birth/first parents, adoptive parents, and adopted persons are brought forth through a range of disciplinary and theoretical lenses. Beginning with background and context of adoption, including sociocultural and political contexts, the handbook then addresses the diversity of adoptive families in terms of family forms, attitudes about adoption, and characteristics of adopted children. Next, research examining the lived experience of adoption for birth parents, adoptive parents, and adopted individuals is presented. A variety of outcomes for internationally and domestically adopted children and adoptive families is then discussed and the handbook concludes by addressing the development, training, and implementation of adoption competent clinical practice. With cutting-edge research from top international scholars in a diversity of fields, The Routledge Handbook of Adoption should be considered essential reading for students, researchers, and practitioners across the fields of social work, sociology, psychology, medicine, family science, education, and demography.
