Book excerpt: This study was conducted in order to determine the effectiveness of a Response to Intervention (RTI) program in a suburban kindergarten through 5th grade elementary school. The research investigated the use of RTI and its effectiveness specifically upon student achievement in reading. Students in kindergarten in this school were examined based upon their reading performance and the lowest learners in the grade level were placed in RTI, a total of about 30 students. Students were often fluctuated between groups of RTI and may have graduated out of the RTI program if their learned skills became adequate with their grade level expectations. The research looks at kindergarten students that were struggling with reading and not receiving RTI during the 2009-2010 school year, before RTI was implemented in the school, and it also looks at kindergarten students that were struggling with reading and did receive RTI during the 2010-2011 school year. The research intended to tell whether RTI made an impact on student achievement and growth. Through the research and study, RTI has shown to be a highly effective strategy to increase student learning and make an impact on their growth.

The problem the researcher set out to find was; Is Response to Intervention (RTI) an effective tool to raise student academic achievement? RTI was a new method of instruction in 2010 and many schools within the nation began to implement this type of instruction, but did it work? The researcher collected student test scores from the California State Test (CST) and from the Little Lake City School District, in Norwalk, California, district benchmark assessments. Perception data and school process data was also collected from students and teachers at William Orr Elementary School, through surveys and interviews. The research found that RTI is an effective tool to help improve student academic achievement. In the years prior to the implementation of RTI, had been in place for 2.5 years, student test scores had risen dramatically. RTI is accountable for flexible groupings of students, student assessments to collect data, data reflections and collaboration, and scientifically proven methods of instruction. These components along with the data collected, prove that at William Orr Elementary School, RTI is an effective tool to raise student academic achievement.

Book excerpt: This paper examined Response to Intervention (RTI) Tier II and Tier III strategies and their effect on student's grades, while comparing 2010-2011 5th grade students second quarter and fourth quarter grades in Language Arts, Reading and Math. The purpose of this research was to determine if using RTI Tier II and Tier III strategies in Language Arts, Reading and Math, increase students grades from Second quarter to Fourth quarter. I compared the second quarter grades to the fourth quarter grades of those students who were involved in Tier II and Tier III Response to Intervention Strategies in Language Arts, Reading and Math. At the end of the school year, I collected these students grades by printing out grade cards that included the class subjects, letter grades and percentage grades of all four quarters of the school year. I only looked at percentage grades for second quarter and fourth quarter in the 5th grade students who were involved in Response to Intervention Tier II and Tier III strategies. The data showed that the 5th grade students involved in Language Arts, Reading and Math Response to Intervention Tier II and Tier III strategies throughout the 2010-2011 academic school year had grades in Language Arts, Reading and Math that improved from second quarter to fourth quarter.

Book excerpt: This research study investigated whether the effects of response to intervention impacted student achievement in a rural virtual high school, as well as sought to determine staff perceptions of the efficacy of the implementation of RTI within the school. The researcher used both quantitative and qualitative analysis to effectively answer the question. The researcher utilized two formative assessment methods; the school's curriculum and intervention platform; Edmentum-PLATO, and the District's Benchmark Assessment; Aimsweb. Results showed strong significance that the treatment group's posttest scores significantly increased as compared to the comparison group with both intervention assessment methods. Staff perceptions concluded that if teachers are effectively trained and if the intervention is implemented with fidelity; student achievement is highly likely.
