Book excerpt: The challenges of nursing school exceed the preparation and abilities of many students despite rigorous admission requirements. Nursing faculty strive to find ways to keep attrition rates as low as possible while maintaining the high academic standards necessary for students to become successful and safe nurses. Unfortunately, attrition rates have remained high for decades. To help students achieve academic success, nursing faculty need to learn more about what students believe impacts their success. Using Jeffreys’ Nursing Universal Retention and Success (NURS) (2012) model as a comparative model, this study explored the beliefs of undergraduate nursing students related to factors that impact academic success in the first year of a nursing program. Findings indicated nursing students believe there are multiple factors impacting their academic success and they have the responsibility to address each of those factors to promote their own persistence and progress through their educational program. Participants recognized students’ responsibility related to study skills, time management, priorities, and attitudes. Participants also noted the need for support systems they can access to help them cope with stress and anxiety. Nurse educators can use the findings of this study to develop programs to assist students and provide the necessary supports to increase student retention.

Book excerpt: Suffering is an unavoidable reality in healthcare. Not only are patients and families suffering but also the clinicians who care for them. Commonly the suffering experienced by clinicians is moral in nature, in part a reflection of the increasing complexity of health care, their roles within it, and the expanding range of available interventions that challenge their moral foundations. Moral suffering is the anguish that arises occurs in response to moral adversity that challenges clinicians integrity: the inner harmony that arises when their essential values and commitments are aligned with their choices and actions. The sources and sequelae of moral distress, one type of moral suffering, have been documented among clinicians across specialties. Transforming their suffering will require solutions that expanded individual and system strategies. Moral resilience, the capacity of an individual to restore or sustain integrity in response to moral adversity, offers a path forward. It encompasses capacities aimed at developing self- regulation and self-awareness, buoyancy, moral efficacy, self-stewardship and ultimately personal and relational integrity. Whether it involves gradual or profound radical change clinicians have the potential to transform themselves and their clinical practice in ways that more authentically reflect their character, intentions and values. The burden of healing our healthcare system is not the sole responsibility of individuals. Clinicians and healthcare organizations must work together to transform moral suffering by cultivating the individual capacities for moral resilience and designing a new architecture to support ethical practice. Used worldwide for scalable and sustainable change, the Conscious Full Spectrum approach, offers a method to solve problems to support integrity, shift patterns that undermine moral resilience and ethical practice, and leverage the inner potential of clinicians and leaders to produce meaningful and sustainable results that benefit all.

Student success is especially precarious within programs of nursing, where curricula include clinical, laboratory, and didactic content. Identifying and describing the barriers and facilitators to nursing student persistence provides a blueprint to appropriately use financial and human resources as well as determine the effect student demographic variables has on desiring, attending, or benefiting from persistence interventions. The outcome of this study can guide the deployment of institutional resources to provide persistence-based interventions that are evidence-based. Framed by Tinto’s Theory of Student Departure, this study assessed the effects of career commitment, distress, and persistence on academic success among undergraduate baccalaureate nursing students. Findings indicated a significant relationship between persistence, emotional concerns (a subscale of distress), and the outcome variable of academic success.

Background Stress is considered to be a major factor affecting the health, well‐being and academic performance of nursing students. Resilience has been extensively researched as a process that allows individuals to successfully adapt to adversity and develop positive outcomes as a result. However, relatively little is known about the resilience of nursing students. Design A constructivist, grounded theory qualitative design was used for this study. Method In‐depth individual interviews were conducted with 38 nursing students enrolled in a four‐year, integrated baccalaureate nursing degree programme at a university in Ontario, Canada. Face‐to‐face interviews were conducted from January to April 2012 using a semi‐structured interview guide. Findings The basic social process of 'pushing through' emerged as nursing students' understanding and enactment of resilience. Participants employed this process to withstand challenges in their academic lives. This process was comprised of three main phases: 'stepping into', 'staying the course' and 'acknowledging'. 'Pushing through' also included a transient 'disengaging' process where students were temporarily unable to push through their adversities. The process of 'pushing through' was based on a progressive trajectory, which implied that nursing students enacted the process to make progress in their academic lives and to attain goals. Conclusion Study findings provide important evidence for understanding the phenomenon of resilience as a dynamic, contextual process that can be learnt and developed, rather than a static trait or personality characteristic.

Book excerpt: Nursing students experience significant challenges related to rigorous academic demands and the nursing role in clinical practice. Academic coaching can be implemented to reduce stress experienced by nursing students and aid students in attaining successful academic outcomes and a positive educational experience. The purpose of this descriptive comparative and correlational study was to explore the impact of academic coaching on junior-level baccalaureate nursing students’ perceived stress, students’ perceptions of the coaching relationship, the relationship between perceptions of the coaching relationship and perceived level of student stress, and the impact of academic coaching on students’ perceptions of academic success. Faculty coaches and student participants met bi-weekly for one academic semester. Students’ perceived stress was measured pre- and post-coaching. Student perceptions of the coaching experience and perceptions of the influence of academic coaching on academic success were evaluated post coaching. Survey data was analyzed to identify associations between academic coaching and perceived stress and student perceptions of the coaching relationship. Examination of survey data included analysis of themes and similarities between student perceptions of academic coaching and its influence on perceived academic success. Correlational data analysis was used to identify relationships between student perceptions of academic coaching and perceived stress. Students had positive perceptions of the coaching relationship and the majority of students perceived academic coaching as contributing to and/or influencing academic success. There was no significant change in perceived student stress after academic coaching. The relationship of students’ perceptions of the coaching relationship and level of stress was not statistically significant. The results of this research study broaden understanding of the impact of academic coaching on nursing students and potential interventions to assist nursing students to have a positive educational experience.
