Book The Effects of Repeated Reading on Second Grade Reading Fluency Scores

Download or read book The Effects of Repeated Reading on Second Grade Reading Fluency Scores written by Kiley Stanislaus and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine if there is a difference in student fluency achievement between repeated reading and traditional reading methods. The data that was collected was comprised of a class of sixteen second grade students from a very small, rural town. The class was divided into two equal groups: traditional and repeated reading. The traditional group received fluency practice in a traditional manner while the repeated reading group only focused on repeated reading. Each student was given a one-minute fluency test at the end of each week for a five week period. The findings were analyzed through Microsoft Excel and A Statistical Program (ASP). The results indicated that there was a slight difference as demonstrated by the traditional mean of 80.15 compared to the repeated reading mean of 88.48, but not a significant statistical difference between the traditional and repeated reading method. Further study in the effectiveness of repeated reading on fluency is warranted. The school may want to consider extending this research for a second year and for a longer period of time.

Book excerpt: Reading fluency has been identified as a key component of proficient reading. Research has consistently demonstrated significant and substantial correlations between reading fluency and overall reading achievement. Despite the great potential for fluency to have a significant outcome on students’ reading achievement, it continues to be not well understood by teachers, school administrators and policy makers. The chapters in this volume examine reading fluency from a variety of perspectives. The initial chapter sketches the history of fluency as a literacy instruction component. Following chapters examine recent studies and approaches to reading fluency, followed by chapters that explore actual fluency instruction models and the impact of fluency instruction. Assessment of reading fluency is critical for monitoring progress and identifying students in need of intervention. Two articles on assessment, one focused on word recognition and the other on prosody, expand our understanding of fluency measurement. Finally, a study from Turkey explores the relationship of various reading competencies, including fluency, in an integrated model of reading. Our hope for this volume is that it may spark a renewed interest in research into reading fluency and fluency instruction and move toward making fluency instruction an even more integral part of all literacy instruction.

Book The Impact of Repeated Reading on Reading Fluency and Comprehension with Second Grade Students

Download or read book The Impact of Repeated Reading on Reading Fluency and Comprehension with Second Grade Students written by Jennifer K. Goedken and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The non-fluent readers in my second grad classroom had low fluency and comprehension scores, but were not eligible for additional reading assistance through Title 1 or special educational instruction. I implemented the Read Naturally program, a repeated reading program, with these students over a nine week period during the first quarter of the 2008-2009 school year. The Standardized Test for the Assessment of Reading, the Basic Reading Inventory, and fluency probes, which are measures used by the Alburnett Community School District, were given as pretests and posttests for this pre-experimental approach to research, utilizing a one-group pretest-posttest design. Teacher recorded bi-weekly comprehension and fluency assessments, as well as a journal were utilized to monitor the progress of the subjects during the treatment period. Students worked with Read Naturally for 30 minutes, four times per week. Read Naturally is a fluency based program which utilizes repeated reading strategies to improve and develop the skills necessary to become fluent oral readers through the utilization of books, audiotapes, and computer software to develop speed, accuracy, and proper expression in oral reading practices. Results showed significant gains in the areas of fluency and comprehension of students involved in the study. Te results may be due to the implementation of the Read Naturally program.

Book The Effects of Using Poetry as a Repeated Reading Technique to Improve the Fluency of Second Grade Readers

Download or read book The Effects of Using Poetry as a Repeated Reading Technique to Improve the Fluency of Second Grade Readers written by Jennifer Dechant and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine if using poetry as a repeated reading strategy would improve second graders' reading fluency scores. Fluency is defined as the ability to read accurately, quickly, and effortlessly with appropriate expression and meaning, is an important aspect of reading because it is the bridge between word recognition and comprehension. This study was concluded in a second grade classroom of 21 students in the fall of 2008. Selected students were chosen to practice and read aloud one poem a week for an eight-week study. Throughout the study, fluency data was collected by listening and timing individuals. Fluency was measured by pre and posttest, and teacher rubric. Results of the study showed a significant growth in fluency among all students involved in this study. While there may be other contributing factors, using poetry can help increase fluency scores.

Download or read book The Effects of Repeated Readings on Second Grade Students with Specific Learning Disabilities written by Amy Marie Keller and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this action research project was to implement repeating readings and examine their effectiveness on the reading fluency of second grade students who have specific learning disabilities. For eight weeks, reapeating reading strategies were implemented for approximately 20 minutes, three days a week. This study took place during reading class with three second grade students. The students' growth was assessed using the Standard Oral Reading Fluency Assessment Passages from the Achievement Improved Monitoring System (AIMSWeb). The Oral Reading Fluency subtest from the Wechsler Individual Achievement Test (3rd edition) and the Reading Fluency subtest from the Woodcock Johnson Tests of Achievement Revised III were also administered. These assessments were given in the winter as a baseline and again in the spring to measure the students' reading fluency growth. Data was analyzed to measure the effectiveness of using the strategy of repeated readings to increase the reading fluency rate of students with reading disabilities.

Download or read book Examining the Effects of Repeated Reading Fluency Interventions on Student Progress Towards Grade level Goals written by DeeAnn Thompson and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of two different fluency-based reading interventions as determined by fluency progress monitoring rates of participants and teacher-perceived usefulness toward the progression towards the participants' grade-level goals as measured on the Measures of Academic Progress (MAPs) standardized test. This study was precipitated by the recent adoption of a Response to Intervention (RtI) approach in the school setting. This approach is designed to increase student achievement of students who are "below," "at," or "beyond" grade level expectations. This study specifically looked at students who are categorized as "below" grade level in reading achievement. The Helping Early Literacy with Practice Strategies (HELPS) intervention was utilized with 6th and 7th grade students during the first research period (Study 1) and "The Six-Minute Solution" was used with a group of 5th and 6th grade students during the second research period (Study 2). Results indicated the interventions did have an overall positive effect on the fluency rates and the standardized tests scores achieved by the students in this study.
