Book Preventing Reading Difficulties in Young Children

Download or read book Preventing Reading Difficulties in Young Children written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1998-07-22 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While most children learn to read fairly well, there remain many young Americans whose futures are imperiled because they do not read well enough to meet the demands of our competitive, technology-driven society. This book explores the problem within the context of social, historical, cultural, and biological factors. Recommendations address the identification of groups of children at risk, effective instruction for the preschool and early grades, effective approaches to dialects and bilingualism, the importance of these findings for the professional development of teachers, and gaps that remain in our understanding of how children learn to read. Implications for parents, teachers, schools, communities, the media, and government at all levels are discussed. The book examines the epidemiology of reading problems and introduces the concepts used by experts in the field. In a clear and readable narrative, word identification, comprehension, and other processes in normal reading development are discussed. Against the background of normal progress, Preventing Reading Difficulties in Young Children examines factors that put children at risk of poor reading. It explores in detail how literacy can be fostered from birth through kindergarten and the primary grades, including evaluation of philosophies, systems, and materials commonly used to teach reading.

Book Teacher Read Alouds at 2nd Grade with and Without Student Companion Texts

Download or read book Teacher Read Alouds at 2nd Grade with and Without Student Companion Texts written by Julie Sobel Kaplan and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using an experimental research design, this project investigated the effects of teacher read-alouds when students did, and did not, have access to companion texts. Based on Connectionist theory, the researchers hypothesized that students in the Companion Text group would outperform students in the Listen Only group on the three examined variables: reading achievement gains, vocabulary scores, and comprehension scores. Twenty, Caucasian second graders from a NJ suburban classroom were randomly assigned to one of the two conditions. The IRI (Burns & Roe, 2002) was used as a pre-and post-test to measure reading achievement gains during the intervention. Additionally, teacher-made comprehension tests and vocabulary were administered for all texts. Students listened to teacher read-alouds for fifteen minutes a day, three times a week, for 12 weeks. All students simultaneously heard the teacher read-aloud, although students in the Companion Text condition sat on one side of the classroom rug while students in the Listen Only condition sat on the other. Results of independent t-tests indicated that students in the Listen Only group had significantly greater reading achievement gains following the 12-week intervention than students in the Companion Text group. Analyses of the comprehension and vocabulary measures did not reveal significant differences between the conditions. Results did not support the hypothesis and suggest that, for young children, companion texts during read-alouds may interfere with, rather than facilitate, reading achievement. Further investigation of this phenomenon is warranted as contradicting results have been reported at upper grade levels.

Book The Effects of an Intervention in Reading for Tier 2 Students

Download or read book The Effects of an Intervention in Reading for Tier 2 Students written by Brooke Louise Krause and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine effects of "Timed Repeated Readings" and "Paired Reading" strategies on reading fluency in a group of four second grade students. The research project was conducted daily for six weeks. The participants were all in a second grade, general education setting. They were also classified as being below grade level in reading and placed in the RTI Tier 2 reading group. During these eight weeks, the participants received daily reading fluency interventions which were "Read with Partner" or "Paired Reading" and "Timed Repeated Readings". The goal for these participants was to improve their fluency rate. This intervention required the participants to be actively involved in their learning. Twice a week students' reading aloud words per minute was recorded. After 8 weeks of the interventions, it was found that students reading below grade level were able to increase their reading fluency rates anywhere between 12% and 200%. It was also found that fluency instruction positively influenced reading comprehension within classroom instruction.

Book Reading Fluency

    Book Details:
  • Author : Timothy Rasinski
  • Publisher : MDPI
  • Release : 2021-01-21
  • ISBN : 3039432680
  • Pages : 146 pages

Download or read book Reading Fluency written by Timothy Rasinski and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2021-01-21 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reading fluency has been identified as a key component of proficient reading. Research has consistently demonstrated significant and substantial correlations between reading fluency and overall reading achievement. Despite the great potential for fluency to have a significant outcome on students’ reading achievement, it continues to be not well understood by teachers, school administrators and policy makers. The chapters in this volume examine reading fluency from a variety of perspectives. The initial chapter sketches the history of fluency as a literacy instruction component. Following chapters examine recent studies and approaches to reading fluency, followed by chapters that explore actual fluency instruction models and the impact of fluency instruction. Assessment of reading fluency is critical for monitoring progress and identifying students in need of intervention. Two articles on assessment, one focused on word recognition and the other on prosody, expand our understanding of fluency measurement. Finally, a study from Turkey explores the relationship of various reading competencies, including fluency, in an integrated model of reading. Our hope for this volume is that it may spark a renewed interest in research into reading fluency and fluency instruction and move toward making fluency instruction an even more integral part of all literacy instruction.
