Book The Impact of Family Processes on Adolescent Sexual Initiation and Contraceptive Use

Download or read book The Impact of Family Processes on Adolescent Sexual Initiation and Contraceptive Use written by Amanda Grace Koch and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Teens in the United States have some of the highest rates of pregnancy, childbearing, and abortion among developed countries. Teens suffer in a variety of ways when they become pregnant and bear children. To further understand the sexual behaviors of teens, I examine the effects of parenting style on adolescent (ages 14-17) sexual initiation and contraceptive use at first sex. Four types of parenting styles are investigated: authoritative, uninvolved, permissive, and authoritarian. Adolescents of authoritarian parents were found to be more likely to initiate sex by age 17 than adolescents of authoritative parents. Other parenting behaviors are better predictors of an adolescent initiation. These include: monitoring of the adolescent, amount of autonomy of the adolescent and whether an adolescent turns to her/his parent with problems. These same parental behaviors do not predict whether an adolescent who initiated sex used a form of contraception at first sex.

This book was released on 2016-11-21 with total page 525 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Decades of research have demonstrated that the parent-child dyad and the environment of the familyâ€"which includes all primary caregiversâ€"are at the foundation of children's well- being and healthy development. From birth, children are learning and rely on parents and the other caregivers in their lives to protect and care for them. The impact of parents may never be greater than during the earliest years of life, when a child's brain is rapidly developing and when nearly all of her or his experiences are created and shaped by parents and the family environment. Parents help children build and refine their knowledge and skills, charting a trajectory for their health and well-being during childhood and beyond. The experience of parenting also impacts parents themselves. For instance, parenting can enrich and give focus to parents' lives; generate stress or calm; and create any number of emotions, including feelings of happiness, sadness, fulfillment, and anger. Parenting of young children today takes place in the context of significant ongoing developments. These include: a rapidly growing body of science on early childhood, increases in funding for programs and services for families, changing demographics of the U.S. population, and greater diversity of family structure. Additionally, parenting is increasingly being shaped by technology and increased access to information about parenting. Parenting Matters identifies parenting knowledge, attitudes, and practices associated with positive developmental outcomes in children ages 0-8; universal/preventive and targeted strategies used in a variety of settings that have been effective with parents of young children and that support the identified knowledge, attitudes, and practices; and barriers to and facilitators for parents' use of practices that lead to healthy child outcomes as well as their participation in effective programs and services. This report makes recommendations directed at an array of stakeholders, for promoting the wide-scale adoption of effective programs and services for parents and on areas that warrant further research to inform policy and practice. It is meant to serve as a roadmap for the future of parenting policy, research, and practice in the United States.

Book The Promise of Adolescence

  • Publisher : National Academies Press

Download or read book The Promise of Adolescence written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2019-07-26 with total page 493 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adolescenceâ€"beginning with the onset of puberty and ending in the mid-20sâ€"is a critical period of development during which key areas of the brain mature and develop. These changes in brain structure, function, and connectivity mark adolescence as a period of opportunity to discover new vistas, to form relationships with peers and adults, and to explore one's developing identity. It is also a period of resilience that can ameliorate childhood setbacks and set the stage for a thriving trajectory over the life course. Because adolescents comprise nearly one-fourth of the entire U.S. population, the nation needs policies and practices that will better leverage these developmental opportunities to harness the promise of adolescenceâ€"rather than focusing myopically on containing its risks. This report examines the neurobiological and socio-behavioral science of adolescent development and outlines how this knowledge can be applied, both to promote adolescent well-being, resilience, and development, and to rectify structural barriers and inequalities in opportunity, enabling all adolescents to flourish.

Book Adolescent Sexual Behavior and Childbearing

Download or read book Adolescent Sexual Behavior and Childbearing written by Laurie Schwab Zabin and published by SAGE. This book was released on 1993 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The topic of adolescent sexual behavior and childbearing at once entails multiple issues related to sexual activity, development, and parenting--each with its own sweeping consequences. Adolescent Sexual Behavior and Childbearing integrates current findings to provide a comprehensive approach to this topic by examining research from diverse perspectives. Discussions of the biological, sociocultural, and interpersonal forces and influences impinging on adolescents are thoughtfully delivered--and patterns of sexual activity, contraceptive use, abortion, single-parenthood, adolescent relationships, and prenatal care are carefully delineated. Interventions to prevent adolescent pregnancy are also provided, making this a resource that yields a powerful statement of the issues for research and social policy. "This is a book that should find a place in the working libraries of all persons interested in adolescent sexuality and pregnancy prevention." --Journal of Perinatology

Book Parenting Practices and Adolescent Sexuality

Download or read book Parenting Practices and Adolescent Sexuality written by Michelle Rainey and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adolescent sexual behavior is at the forefront of social science research because it is central to a number of social and medical issues; it remains a major public concern. Underlying factors that influence adolescent sexual behavior are investigated within a sociological framework. Aspects of sexuality are explored through the application of self-control theory which posits that parents are responsible for development of self-control in their children, and that the level of self-control determines the propensity to engage in risk-related behavior. It is hypothesized that adolescent perceptions of parental warmth and control influence adolescent level of self-control; that level of self-control influences engagement in risk-taking behavior; and that risk-taking behavior influences whether or not adolescents feel they are at risk for acquiring STDs. Using data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health, this study employs structural equation modeling using LISREL. Results showed adolescent level of self-control influences risk-taking behavior, and that engagement in risk-taking behavior does influence adolescent perception of risk for acquiring STDs. The findings are of great value for primary and secondary educators, public officials and policy makers, guidance counselors, parents or other concerned family members, and even for adolescents.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three decades into the HIV pandemic, the goals remain clear: reduce the number of infections, improve the health outcomes of those who are infected, and eliminate disparities in care. And one observation continues to gain credence: families are a powerful resource in preventing, adapting to, and coping with HIV. Recognizing their complex role as educators, mentors, and caregivers, Family and HIV/AIDS assembles a wealth of findings from successful prevention and intervention strategies and provides models for translating evidence into effective real-world practice. Chapters spotlight the differing roles of mothers and fathers in prevention efforts, clarify the need for family/community collaborations, and examine core issues of culture, ethnicity, gender, and diagnosis (e.g., minority families, adolescents with psychological disorders). Throughout, risk reduction and health promotion are shown as a viable public health strategy A reference with considerable utility across the health, mental health, and related disciplines,Family and HIV/AIDS will be a go-to resource for practitioners working with families, researchers studying at-risk populations, administrators seeking to create new (or evaluate existing)prevention and care programs, and policymakers involved in funding such programs.

Book Father Influence on Adolescent Sexual Debut

Download or read book Father Influence on Adolescent Sexual Debut written by Daniel J. Blocker and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Guided by the limited previous literature of adolescent sexual debut and father behaviors, this study examined the influence of father warmth, involvement, and monitoring on adolescent age of sexual debut and likelihood of sexual debut before age 16. Participants and measures were drawn from the Flourishing Families Project and included 346 families and variables from measures completed by adolescents and their parents. A zero-inflated Poisson model was used to test the relationship between father variables and adolescent sexual debut. Gender differences were also analyzed. The findings indicate that an increase in father warmth correlates with a decreased age of sexual debut for adolescent sons and daughters. Results also suggest that an increase in father engagement is related to an increase in the age of debut. Findings suggest that these effects seem to be protective in some circumstances, while increasing risk in other instances. Implications for future research is considered.

Book The Mother daughter Relationship During Early Adolescence and Its Influence on Sexual Initiation Prior to Age 16 in the Daughter

This book was released on 2009 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conclusions: Results support that high levels of cohesion, good communication and being satisfied with the time spent together in the mother-daughter relationship during early adolescence is associated with later sexual initiation in the daughter. This suggests that this relationship may act as a protective factor against sexual initiation prior age 16.
