Download or read book The Effects of Dissolved Ozone on the Corrosion Behavior of 304 Stainless Steel Monel 400 and Naval Brass in Artificial Sea Water written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects of 0.02, 1.2 and 2.3 mg/L ozone on the corrosion behavior of 304 stainless steel, Monel 400, and naval brass were studied at room temperature in artificial sea water at pH 7.5, and the results were compared with those obtained for aerated solutions. Corrosion potentials and cyclic polarization curves were measured after 1 and 17 hour exposure times. Instantaneous corrosion rates were measured using linear polarization resistance (LPR) techniques. Long term (30 day) crevice corrosion experiments were also performed on stainless steel and naval brass in aerated and 0.8 mg/L ozonated solutions. Increasingly noble corrosion potentials were observed in the cases of stainless steel and Monel with increasing ozone concentration due to the noble redox potential of ozone. Naval brass, on the other hand, maintained a fairly constant corrosion potential, independent of ozone concentration, due to the formation of a bulk corrosion product on the metal surface. LPR measurements on naval brass reflected the corrosion rates of both zinc and copper due to dezincification occurring on the metal surface. These corrosion rates were found to Corrosion, Stainless steel, Copper nickel alloy, Dissolved ozone, Chloride solutions be independent of ozone concentration and exposure time, although it appears that exposure to 0.02 mg/L ozone after 17 hours resulted in complete dezincification at the surface. The corrosion rate of Monel was found to increase at elevated ozone concentrations, independent of exposure time. Stainless steel, however, showed a decreasing corrosion rate with increasing ozone concentration after one hour due to ozone quickly stabilizing the passive film.

This book was released on 1998 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ozone is being considered as an alternative to chlorine based biocides for use in marine heat exchange systems. Ozone has several advantages over chlorine based biocides: including stronger oxidizing power, the ability to be produced on site, and degradation to oxygen. Before ozone is used in heat exchange systems it is important to understand its impact on the corrosion behavior of the metals used in these systems. Two separate studies were carried out: the first at the Corrosion Lab, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY comparing ozonated and aerated seawater for thirty, sixty, and ninety days, and the second, at the LaQue Center for Corrosion Technology, Inc. in Wrightsville Beach, N.C. which compared ozonated and chlorinated seawater environments for sixty days. Electrochemical experiments were performed and compared with crevice coupon immersion tests to determine effects of dissolved ozone on the corrosion behavior of Monel 400, Monel K-500, 90Cu/10Ni (CDA 706), and 70Cu/30Ni (CDA 715). Studies in-lab correctly predicted the morphology of crevice corrosion in ozonated seawater but, did not predict the extent of corrosion seen in the North Carolina tests.

Book The Effect of Dissolved Ozone on the Corrosion Behavior of Cu 30 Ni and 304L Stainless Steel in 0 5 N NaCl Solutions

Download or read book The Effect of Dissolved Ozone on the Corrosion Behavior of Cu 30 Ni and 304L Stainless Steel in 0 5 N NaCl Solutions written by H. H. Lu and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electrochemical experiments on the effect of dissolved ozone on the corrosion behavior of Copper-30 Nickel and 304 L stainless steel have been performed in 0.5 N Sodium chloride solutions at room temperature. The experiments performed included measurements of corrosion potential as a function of time and ozone concentrations, cyclic polarization experiments, iso-potential measurements of current densities and Auger electron spectroscopy studies of the chemical composition of the corrosion product films. The results of these experiments have shown that for both Cu-based alloy and the stainless steel, the corrosion potential exhibits a marked shift to more noble values (approx. 300 mv) for ozone concentrations less the 0.2 - 0.3 mg/l. At higher ozone concentrations the corrosion potential is virtually independent of the level of ozone dissolved in the solution. The presence of dissolved ozone resulted in a reduction in the corrosion rate for the Cu-30 Ni alloy, as measured by a significant decrease in the current density at a constant applied potential. This improvement in the corrosion resistance appears to be related to a reduction in the corrosion product film thickness and a higher fraction of oxygen to chloride in the corrosion product film. For the stainless steel, Auger electron spectroscopy indicated no appreciable differences between the passive film produced in ozonated solutions versus those in unozonated solutions. Keywords: Passivity; Pitting. (AW).

Book Corrosion Behaviour and Protection of Copper and Aluminium Alloys in Seawater

Download or read book Corrosion Behaviour and Protection of Copper and Aluminium Alloys in Seawater written by D Féron and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2007-05-17 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Copper and aluminium alloys are widely used in marine engineering in areas such as pipelines, storage tanks, ships' hulls and cladding for offshore structures. This important book reviews key factors affecting the corrosion and service life of these materials in the marine environment. The book is divided into five parts, with part one reviewing key aspects of the corrosion behaviour of both these alloys. Part two discusses the use of copper and copper-nickel alloys in seawater, whilst Parts 3 and 4 cover aluminium bronzes and alloys. The final section of the book covers the use of aluminium-based materials as anodes for the cathodic protection of marine structures.Corrosion behaviour and protection of copper and aluminium alloys in seawater is an important reference for marine engineers concerned with the corrosion and service life of these materials. - Reviews key factors affecting the corrosion and service life of copper and aluminium alloys - Discusses the use of the alloys in seawater
