Book The Effects of Optical Feedback on Polarization of Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers

Download or read book The Effects of Optical Feedback on Polarization of Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 61 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers (VCSELs) are a type of semiconductor laser with a cavity oriented orthogonally to the planes of material growth. These lasers differ from conventional edge emitting lasers in several important ways. They have symmetric output beams and they are easily built into two dimensional arrays, making them very attractive as photonic components. The characteristic of interest in this thesis is polarization. While the asymmetric cavities of edge emitters exhibit a clear preference for light polarized in a particular direction, the cylindrically symmetric cavity of a VCSEL has no clear preference. Therefore, it should be relatively easy to change the polarization of a VCSEL. This thesis examines the polarization switching effects of optical feedback from an external reflector. By feeding back various amounts of cross-polarized light, the switching susceptibility of the VCSEL can be determined. Measurements confirmed that the polarization of a VCSEL can be switched through polarized optical feedback, with the degree of switching depending on the strength of feedback. This switching was a relatively rare behavior, indicating that most VCSELs had some type of preferential polarization. This preference could be due to the VCSEL structure itself or the manner in which it was excited.

Book Diffractive Optics for Polarization Control of Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers

Download or read book Diffractive Optics for Polarization Control of Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers written by Johannes Michael Ostermann and published by Cuvillier Verlag. This book was released on 2007-08-16 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Lasers (VCSELs) have replaced edge-emitting laser diodes in several applications during the last years, e.g., in short distance optical data communication. Additionally, their invention has enabled new products such as optical computer mice using semiconductor lasers. However, VCSELs have intrinsically an unstable and not well-defined polarization, which has prohibited their usage in a considerable number of application areas up to now. Therefore, this thesis deals with polarization control of VCSELs. The highly sought-after polarization stabilization of VCSELs is achieved by using monolithically integrated surface gratings. The polarization control induced by these surface gratings has proven to be very reliable in thousands of grating VCSELs, under temperature variation, feedback, strain, and high-frequency modulation. Combining a surface grating with a surface relief, VCSELs having simultaneously a stable polarization and a high single-mode output power have been realized for the first time. Thus, surface grating VCSELs combine a well-defined polarization with low production costs and an excellent overall laser performance. With these properties, surface gratings outperform all other methods for polarization control of VCSELs tested before. Consequently, surface gratings have proven to be the method of choice for polarization control of VCSELs in commercial applications.

This book was released on 2003-09-04 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A practical, hands-on guidebook for the efficient modeling of VCSELs Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers (VCSELs) are a unique type of semiconductor laser whose optical output is vertically emitted from the surface as opposed to conventional edge-emitting semiconductor lasers. Complex in design and expensive to produce, VCSELs nevertheless represent an already widely used laser technology that promises to have even more significant applications in the future. Although the research has accelerated, there have been relatively few books written on this important topic. Analysis and Design of Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers seeks to encapsulate this growing body of knowledge into a single, comprehensive reference that will be of equal value for both professionals and academics in the field. The author, a recognized expert in the field of VCSELs, attempts to clarify often conflicting assumptions in order to help readers achieve the simplest and most efficient VCSEL models for any given problem. Highlights of the text include: * A clear and comprehensive theoretical treatment of VCSELs * Detailed derivations for understanding the operational principles of VCSELs * Mathematical models for the investigation of electrical, optical, and thermal properties of VCSELs * Case studies on the mathematical modeling of VCSELs and the implementation of simulation programs

Book Polarisation Properties of Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers

Download or read book Polarisation Properties of Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers written by Abdulqader Qader and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2014-09-19 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New approaches namely circularly polarised optical injection and circularly polarised optical feedback have been used experimentally for the first time. Using circularly polarised externally optical injection, the output polarisation of electrically pumped VCSELs can be strongly influenced. The linear polarisation of VCSELs emission can become circularly polarised for bias currents below or near the threshold current of the stand-alone VCSELs. In addition, using a new circularly polarised optical feedback scheme, the VCSELs emission was made to exhibit a degree of circular polarisation. The degree of circular polarisation depends on the feedback power ratio and the VCSEL bias current.

Book THE EFFECTS OF EXTREMELY SHORT EXTERNAL CAVITY OPTICAL

Download or read book THE EFFECTS OF EXTREMELY SHORT EXTERNAL CAVITY OPTICAL written by Elizabeth Merritt and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Telecommunications is a growing and intensely competitive global multi-trillion dollar industry that specializes in the transmission of information all over the world. The data for every television show, website, and telephone conversation travels through one of the industry s many information networks. One of the most common methods of transmission is using fiber optic networks, in which a laser is modulated to send light signals into an optical fiber. The importance of vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) to the telecommunications industry is growing rapidly. VCSELs are more cost-efficient to mass-produce and they have better fiber coupling efficiencies as compared to the edge-emitting semiconducting lasers that are the current industry standard. VCSELs were developed with the hope that they would not be subject to some of the main failings of edge-emitting lasers, such as sensitivity to optical feedback. This occurs when some of the emitted light from a laser is accidentally reflected off other optical components in a system, like the end of an optical fiber, back into the laser. The space between the aperture of the laser and the reflective surface is defined as an external cavity. Extremely-short external-cavity (ESEC) optical feedback is feedback that occurs from a surface within a few microns of the VCSEL aperture. In an unmodulated VCSEL, ESEC feedback has been shown to produce periodic variation in the VCSEL's threshold current, output power [1], polarization switching current and polarization switching current hysteresis width [2], with respect to variation in the external cavity length. The experimental setup for this experiment mimics the operational setup of a modulated fiber coupled VCSEL as it would be used for data transmission. This presentation will examine those same laser characteristics under the effects of ESEC optical feedback on VCSELs modulated up to 10 GHz.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A distinctive discussion of the nonlinear dynamical phenomena of semiconductor lasers. The book combines recent results of quantum dot laser modeling with mathematical details and an analytic understanding of nonlinear phenomena in semiconductor lasers and points out possible applications of lasers in cryptography and chaos control. This interdisciplinary approach makes it a unique and powerful source of knowledge for anyone intending to contribute to this field of research. By presenting both experimental and theoretical results, the distinguished authors consider solitary lasers with nano-structured material, as well as integrated devices with complex feedback sections. In so doing, they address such topics as the bifurcation theory of systems with time delay, analysis of chaotic dynamics, and the modeling of quantum transport. They also address chaos-based cryptography as an example of the technical application of highly nonlinear laser systems.
