Book The Effects of Music Therapy on Comfort in the Mechanically Ventilated Patient in the Intensive Care Unit

Download or read book The Effects of Music Therapy on Comfort in the Mechanically Ventilated Patient in the Intensive Care Unit written by Jamie Marie Besel and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this pilot study was to assess the effects of music therapy on comfort in acute mechanically ventilated patients in the Intensive Care Unit. Mechanical ventilation leads to decreased comfort. Pain and anxiety may increase during this treatment modality, and the literature suggests this may directly affect patient comfort levels. Music therapy as a nursing intervention within the context of comfort, pain, and anxiety of mechanically ventilated patients was investigated. This quasi-experiemental study used a pre-test and post-test design with subjects serving as their own control. The convenience sample consisted of 2 men and 3 women who were mechanically ventilated and fit the selection criteria. Dependent variables measured included comfort, pain, and anxiety. Physiologic dependent measures included heart rate, respiratory rate, and systolic and diastolic blood pressure collected at timed intervals. Comfort was measured using a modified version of the Hospice Comfort Questionnaire. Pain was measured using the Numerical Graphic Rating Pain Scale. Anxiety was measured using the Faces Anxiety Scale. Important preliminary quantitative results are provided by this pilot study. The mean, standard deviation, significance, and paired t-tests were compared for each tool to determine changes in scoring before and after the intervention and control. This was also completed for physiological data including systolic and diastolic blood pressure, respiratory rate, and heart rate. Paired t-tests showed no significant mean differences between two points of measurement on systolic, diastolic, heart rate, and respiratory rate in both the intervention and control groups. Comfort, anxiety, and pain scores before and after the intervention and control also did not demonstrate significance. The small sample size makes generalization of these findings impossible to the entire population of acute mechanically ventilated patients in Billings, Montana.

Book A Single Session Music Therapy Intervention Model for Mechanically Ventilated Patients in Intensive Care

Download or read book A Single Session Music Therapy Intervention Model for Mechanically Ventilated Patients in Intensive Care written by Sung Tak (Josephine) Lee and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Patients in the intensive care unit (ICU) are exposed to numerous stressors including environmental disturbance and extensive medical treatments. The critical state of patients’ medical conditions requires close monitoring for possible rapid changes. One of the standard procedures to maintain adequate oxygen level is mechanical ventilation. This invasive treatment tremendously augments the level of state anxiety among patients. Music therapy has a long history of use in hospital settings as a complementary treatment to improve or maintain patients’ well-being. Studies have shown observable benefits of music therapy in the reduction of state anxiety in patients undergoing medical treatments. However, the administration of musical experience for mechanically ventilated patients in ICU are generally done by non-music therapy staff using pre-recorded music. Publications on music therapy intervention models in the ICU remains scarce. Given the broad range of music therapy methods that can be used for this population, the purpose of this thesis is to design a single session music therapy intervention model for mechanically ventilated patients in the ICU to reduce state anxiety. The structure of this intervention model was based on the intervention research methodology outlined by Fraser and Galinsky [Research on Social Work Practice, 2010]. A systematic literature survey served as the main source of data collection and was then analysed with qualitative content analysis method through a data coding process. This research provides a framework for future music therapy clinical practices and identifies areas for further research with this population.

Book Effects of Music Therapy Vs Music Medicine on Physiological and Psychological Parameters of Intensive Care Patients

Download or read book Effects of Music Therapy Vs Music Medicine on Physiological and Psychological Parameters of Intensive Care Patients written by Carol Lee Shultis and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This randomized controlled trial examined the effects of Music Therapy (MT), Music Medicine (MM), or Attention Control (AC) on physiological and psychological parameters of stress for adult and older adult patients receiving care in the Intensive Care Unit of a community general hospital. Previous studies have indicated effectiveness of music therapy or music medicine for these medical patients, but few data are available for music therapy interventions. This study was an attempt to add to available information about the effects of music therapy compared to the effects of music medicine or attention control for this patient population. Participants (twenty-eight adults, ranging in age from 37-83 years; not mechanically ventilated at the time of session) were randomly assigned to music therapy, music medicine or the attention control group. Repeated measures of heart rate, blood pressure, respiratory rate, oxygen saturation, and anxiety and pain levels were collected before the session, immediately after the session and at 60 minutes post-session. Anxiety was measured using the Faces Anxiety Scale, and pain was self-reported via a Visual Analog Scale. Post-session length of stay was collected from the participants' medical records. Overall, there were no significant interactions among study groups and outcome measures. There was a statistically significant difference between length of stay for music therapy participants and attention control. Over time from pre-session to post-session, statistically significant decreases in anxiety scores were measured for both music medicine and music therapy groups. Pain scores decreased for both music medicine and music therapy groups, however not significantly. Some medically beneficial effects of music therapy or music medicine were evident in the data.

Book The Effect of Musical Entrainment on Respiration of Patients on Mechanical Ventilation in the Intensive Care Unit

Download or read book The Effect of Musical Entrainment on Respiration of Patients on Mechanical Ventilation in the Intensive Care Unit written by Sondra D. Phillips and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of music entrainment on respiration of patients receiving mechanical ventilation in the Intensive Care Unit. Patients met criteria to participate in the study if they were admitted to the ICU, had a medical diagnosis or had undergone cardiac surgery, and were receiving mechanical ventilation for a period of 1-10 days. Subjects were divided into randomly assigned experimental (n = 20) and control (n = 20) groups. Each of the groups contained 10 patients with medical diagnoses and 10 who had undergone cardiac surgery. The experimental group received one session of live music during the spontaneous breathing trial, which was performed every morning during the process of weaning from the ventilator. Data were collected on the measures of rapid shallow breathing index, respiration rate, heart rate, and oxygen saturation rate. The researcher ascertained the patient's preferred music in a family interview (see Appendix F) and used that to fashion a music therapy intervention. Based on baseline readings, musical tempo was matched to the patient's beginning respiration rate. The patient then listened for 25 minutes to four songs which either gradually increased or decreased in tempo, with every 1st beat of the music accented in order to attempt entrainment of respiration. The control group received no music intervention. Each patient (if able) or a family representative gave consent to participate in the study. Results of a Two-Way ANOVA indicated a significant decrease in the RSBI readings of the medical group who received music therapy and only a slightly significant decrease in oxygen saturation rates of cardiac patients who received music therapy. There were no significant differences by group or from pre to post-test for other measures.
