Book excerpt: The effects of time-dependent electron density fluctuations on a synthesized time domain reflectometry response of a one-dimensional cold plasma sheath are considered. Numerical solutions of the Helmholtz wave equation, which describes the electric field of a normally incident plane wave in a specified static electron density profile, are used. A study of the effects of Doppler shifts resulting from moving density fluctuations in the electron density profile of the sheath is included. Varying electron density levels corrupt time domain and distance measurements. Reducing or modulating the electron density levels of a given electron density profile affects the time domain response of a plasma and results in motion of the turning point, and the effective motion has a significant effect on measuring electron density locations. In this paper the theory is extended to include collisions as represented by a Fokker-Planck equation such as the one used in the theory of Brownian motion. Numerical calculations have been carried out to show graphically the transition of the spectrum from the collisionless to the collisiondominated case. The results of the present analysis involve some thus far untabulated functions. These functions have been numerically evaluated and the results are presented in graphical form. (Author).

We assume the absence of a magnetic field, neglect collisions, and assume n/D cubed is greater than 1. The statistical average of P squared is calculated as a function of a equals 1/kD assuming complete thermodynamic equilibrium; that component of P squared, which keeps in phase with the ion charge density fluctuations is also calculated. The frequency spectrum of the time-varying function P is obtained at thermal equilibrium and simplified, assuming the ion mass to be much larger than the electron mass, for general values of a and T/T sub i. For small a the main component of the spectrum has the characteristic Doppler broadening shape corresponding to the electron's thermal velocity. For large a we have a component with narrow width corresponding roughly to the ion-velocity Doppler spread and very narrow side bands at plus and minus the frequency of electrostatic plasma oscillations. Typically the examination on a spectrum analyzer of an rf signal which has been passed through a la oratory plasma reveals a transfer of energy into sidebands of the original frequency. In dc discharges the main components observed are those due to the strong oscillations which occur in the low-frequ ncy range elow one megacycle. A theory of phase modulation of an rf signal by the low-frequency fluctuations of a plasma is described. It is shown that strong sidebands should be expected, and that under certain circumstances the original carrier amplitude may become zero. The res lts obtained agree well with experimental measurements carried out on a plasma column modulated in density by an external lowfrequency signal. (Author).
