Book excerpt: Mind wandering, or thought unrelated to the task at hand, predicts mood in the moment more than five times better than what activity a person is doing and is implicated in clinical disorders such as depression. In addition to emotion, mind wandering predicts errors in reading comprehension and tasks requiring sustained attention. Given mind wandering's prevalence in 50% of daily life and its relevance to well-being and cognitive performance, it is worth better understanding how to regulate it. Therefore, we investigated mind wandering's correlative, causal, and mechanistic relationship to two of its potential regulators, working memory and mindfulness. In chapter 2, we investigated whether working memory solely inhibits mind wandering or instead facilitates mind wandering in a context-dependent fashion. We accomplished this by assessing whether those with greater working memory capacity reported more mind wandering specifically during undemanding tasks. In chapter 3, we explored whether mindfulness was related to decreased mind wandering by developing a behavioral measure of mindfulness - breath counting - and assessing whether it was negatively correlated with mind wandering. In chapter 4, we investigated the causal relation of mind wandering with working memory and mindfulness by assessing whether working memory training would increase working memory and thus increase mind wandering, and whether breath counting training would increase mindfulness and thus decrease mind wandering. Finally, in chapter 5, we examined whether working memory capacity reduced mind wandering by restricting it from awareness. This mechanism was investigated by assessing whether awareness of mind wandering increased when working memory was loaded and thus no longer available to restrict mind wandering from awareness. Findings suggest that working memory may facilitate mind wandering in undemanding contexts. In contrast, mindfulness may result in decreased mind wandering in the moments when it is exercised, and repeatedly exercising mindfulness through breath counting training may increase mindfulness.

We addressed many of the limitations through larger samples, a design combining a randomized active-controlled trial (RCT) with cross-sectional analysis of long-term training, and complementary brain and behavioral measures. Mindfulness meditation involves paying attention to the present moment, with a non-reactive stance toward experience. This dissertation rigorously tested the impact of mindfulness meditation training on the neural correlates of emotional nonreactivity, resting state functional connectivity (RSFC) in brain networks associated with attention and mind-wandering, and structural neuroplasticity. We examined the impact of short-term training with Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), which is widely used, extensively tested and has demonstrated clinical efficacy. In Chapter 1, we examined amygdala reactivity and functional connectivity with ventromedial prefrontal cortex (VMPFC) during emotional stimuli, which have been implicated in emotion regulation. Mindfulness meditation was associated with reduced amygdala reactivity and increased functional connectivity with VMPFC. Increased amygdala-VMPFC functional connectivity was associated with decreased amygdala reactivity from pre- to post-intervention. In Chapter 2, we replicated and extended prior work showing increased RSFC between posterior cingulate cortex (PCC) and lateral prefrontal cortex (LPFC), which are implicated in mind-wandering and attention, respectively. Increased PCC-LPFC RSFC is hypothesized to reflect better attentional control of mind-wandering. In support of this hypothesis, we found that increased self-reported attention was associated with stronger PCC-LPFC RSFC from pre- to post-intervention. In Chapter 3, we attempted to replicate and extend research showing changes in regional gray matter volume (GMV) associated with mindfulness meditation training. However, there were no significant differences in GMV between meditators and controls. Yet, time practicing mindfulness meditation was associated with differences in amygdala and hippocampus GMV. This dissertation provides evidence for tangible neural changes associated with mindfulness meditation training, which are consistent with hypothesized benefits in emotional nonreactivity and attention. The lack of replication of group differences in brain structure highlights the need for publishing null results, and for rigorous RCTs of MBSR in community samples. Finally, effects of practice time were evident across measures, underscoring the importance of sustained meditation practice.

We used free recall and recognition memory tests based on positive, negative, and neutral images to measure memory performance, and compared results between experimental and control conditions. This paper focuses on the recognition memory portion of the study. Our experimental group underwent a brief, single-session mindfulness meditation, and our control group underwent a brief, single-session mindwandering meditation prior to being presented with the stimuli images. After being presented with the stimuli, participants underwent a distractor task, and then took the free recall and recognition memory tests. We hypothesized that those in the mindfulness condition would remember more positive and neutral images, but less negative images, than those in the mind-wandering condition. Our hypothesis was not supported by our results, which indicated no significant difference in performance on the memory tests between groups.
