Download or read book The Effects of Maternal Employment on the Scholastic Performance of Children written by Sandra Jean Zins and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects of maternal employment, as contrasted with maternal non-employment, on the scholastic performance of children were studied using a sample of 80 Mount Ogden Junior High seventh grade students and their mothers. The 80 mot hers concerned met the criterion for employment by having worked a forty-hour week outside the home the first six years their child at t ended school or the criteria of non-employment by having never engaged in paid employment outside the home for the first six years of their child's schooling. Of nine areas tested between the two groups no significant difference was found concerning grade point average, reading achievement scores, absenteeism, conduct scores, education of the mother, and the number of hours that the mother and child spent together on a school day. A significant difference at the.01 l eve l was found when comparing the number of children in the family of employed mothers (3. 3 children) to the families of non-employed mothers (4.5 children). A high positive correlation was found between the mother's attitude toward her work or non-work status and the child' s scholastic achievement. It was noted that the study of attitude, in itself, was not sufficient Attitudes must be pursued i n terms of their manifestation in the home, whether they be positively or negatively expressed, and it must be determined whether or not a child in grades one t o s ix can perceive and interpret these manifestations realistically.

Book The Effect of Maternal Employment on Children 92 s Academic Performance

Download or read book The Effect of Maternal Employment on Children 92 s Academic Performance written by Rachel Elizabeth Dunifon and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using a Danish data set that follows 135,000 Danish children from birth through 9th grade, we examine the effect of maternal employment during a child's first three and first 15 years on that child's grade point average in 9th grade. We address the endogeneity of employment by including a rich set of household control variables, instrumenting for employment with the gender- and education-specific local unemployment rate, and by including maternal fixed effects. We find that maternal employment has a positive effect on children's academic performance in all specifications, particularly when women work part-time. This is in contrast with the larger literature on maternal employment, much of which takes place in other contexts, and which finds no or a small negative effect of maternal employment on children's cognitive development and academic performance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Featuring forthright testimonials by women who are or have been mothers as undergraduates, graduate students, academic staff, administrators, and professors, Mothers in Academia intimately portrays the experiences of women at various stages of motherhood while theoretically and empirically considering the conditions of working motherhood as academic life has become more laborious. As higher learning institutions have moved toward more corporate-based models of teaching, immense structural and cultural changes have transformed women's academic lives and, by extension, their families. Hoping to push reform as well as build recognition and a sense of community, this collection offers several potential solutions for integrating female scholars more wholly into academic life. Essays also reveal the often stark differences between women's encounters with the academy and the disparities among various ranks of women working in academia. Contributors--including many women of color--call attention to tokenism, scarce valuable networks, and the persistent burden to prove academic credentials. They also explore gendered parenting within the contexts of colonialism, racism, sexism, ethnocentrism, ageism, and heterosexism.

Book Maternal Employment and Children s Development

This book was released on 2013-11-21 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a review written in 1979, I noted that there was a paucity of research examining the effects of maternal employment on the infant and young child and also that longitudinal studies of the effects of maternal em ployment were needed (Hoffman, 1979). In the last 10 years, there has been a flurry of research activity focused on the mother's employment during the child's early years, and much of this work has been longi tudinal. All of the studies reported in this volume are at least short-term longitudinal studies, and most of them examine the effects of maternal employment during the early years. The increased focus on maternal employment during infancy is not a response to the mandate of that review but rather reflects the new employment patterns in the United States. In March 1985, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that 49.4% of married women with children less than a year old were employed outside the home (Hayghe, 1986). This figure is up from 39% in 1980 and more than double the rate in 1970. By now, most mothers of children under 3 are in the labor force.

Book Employed Mothers and Their Children

Download or read book Employed Mothers and Their Children written by Jacqueline V. Lerner and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-04-14 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1969 the author wrote a letter to Science protesting the unfair treatment of academic mothers, who were expected to work full-time. Her problem with balancing work and family life was typical of the problems of most young parents in the United States. More than 20 years later, the same problems have not been solved, even though more than twice as many families are headed by a fully-employed parent or parents. In this volume, the authors survey the many problems of employed parents and their children. Documenting problems by sound research and pointing to the future solutions is a valuable contribution to the psychological literature.

Book Families in an Era of Increasing Inequality

Download or read book Families in an Era of Increasing Inequality written by Paul R. Amato and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-10-07 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The widening gap between the rich and the poor is turning the American dream into an impossibility for many, particularly children and families. And as the children of low-income families grow to adulthood, they have less access to opportunities and resources than their higher-income peers--and increasing odds of repeating the experiences of their parents. Families in an Era of Increasing Inequality probes the complex relations between social inequality and child development and examines possibilities for disrupting these ongoing patterns. Experts across the social sciences track trends in marriage, divorce, employment, and family structure across socioeconomic strata in the U.S. and other developed countries. These family data give readers a deeper understanding of how social class shapes children's paths to adulthood and how those paths continue to diverge over time and into future generations. In addition, contributors critique current policies and programs that have been created to reduce disparities and offer suggestions for more effective alternatives. Among the topics covered: Inequality begins at home: the role of parenting in the diverging destinies of rich and poor children. Inequality begins outside the home: putting parental educational investments into context. How class and family structure impact the transition to adulthood. Dealing with the consequences of changes in family composition. Dynamic models of poverty-related adversity and child outcomes. The diverging destinies of children and what it means for children's lives. As new initiatives are sought to improve the lives of families and children in the short and long term, Families in an Era of Increasing Inequality is a key resource for researchers and practitioners in family studies, social work, health, education, sociology, demography, and psychology.
