Book The Effects of Mastery Learning and Cooperative Competitive and Individualistic Learning Environment Organizations on Achievement and Attitudes in Mathematics

Download or read book The Effects of Mastery Learning and Cooperative Competitive and Individualistic Learning Environment Organizations on Achievement and Attitudes in Mathematics written by Guzver Yildiran and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Motivation for learning is important for positive learning outcomes as well as for measured achievement levels. When students come to our classes, they bring with them learning histories in which we as individual teachers, most likely, did not have an input. Our students do not only bring with them different levels of prerequisite leanings but also different levels of affect for what they will be learning. If we leave their final learning at the mercy of these entry characteristics, a test given the first day before the course will have almost isomorphic results with their achievement levels on the last day. The ones who had "it" on the first day will be the ones who in the future will also have "it", not too different from what the present situation is all over the world. These circumstances will tend to be the case ad infinitum, unless of course, we want to change the situation. This research clearly shows that effective instructional methodologies coupled with cooperative peer interactions not only have an impact on achievement but also on positive attitudes toward one's learning. (Contains 11 tables.).

Book Implementing Mastery Learning

Download or read book Implementing Mastery Learning written by Thomas R. Guskey and published by Corwin Press. This book was released on 2022-10-28 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The definitive classic—updated for our times. After 50 years, Benjamin Bloom’s revolutionary work on mastery learning is more relevant than ever. One of the most widely researched and proven-effective education methodologies in existence, it provides a direct challenge to the traditional, deterministic, time-based approaches to teaching and learning that have perpetuated inequities for generations of children. Mastery learning is the progenitor of many of today’s most promising teaching methods, including competency-based learning, personalized instruction, and differentiated instruction. It helped to elevate the importance and use of formative assessment as a powerful instructional practice. This timely new edition of the foremost practical guide includes: Recent applications of the principles of mastery learning to distance, hybrid, and blended learning environments Updates including evidence from recent implementation efforts, the results of the most current research on mastery learning and its implications for practice Step-by-step guidance on implementation across grade levels and subject areas Supplemental, on-line chapters that unpack the development of effective formative assessments and connections between RTI and mastery learning Written by one of the most highly regarded scholar/practitioners in the field and the leading interpreter of Bloom’s work, this updated guidebook is essential reading for teachers, school leaders, professional learning communities, and anyone who believes that all students can learn well, achieve success, and become confident learners.

Book excerpt: Abstract: A comprehensive book on cooperative learning based on the Second Conference of the International Association of Cooperation in Education in July 1982. The essays presented here are revised versions of the papers given at this conference. Starting with the basic concepts of cooperative learning, these essays then move into more detailed approaches to this type of learning. Topics covered include cooperation and competition in children, learning in small and/or cooperative groups, cooperative learning in science and mathematics and in multi-cultural groups, and the promotion of cooperative learning. Although most of the research presented here deals with classroom learning, many of these concepts can be applied to nonathletic out-of-school activities.

Book Cooperative Learning and Metacognitive Instruction

Download or read book Cooperative Learning and Metacognitive Instruction written by Fanny Jimenez and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2005-07-29 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2004 in the subject Pedagogy - General, grade: A (excellent), Indiana University (Instructional Systems Technology), course: Instructional Psychology, language: English, abstract: INTRODUCTION There has been a lot of research concerning the problems of implementing new techniques and strategies into classroom instruction. The difficulties of innovation may be due to resistance to change, lack of congruence between teachers’ beliefs and practices and several other factors. This does not sound very optimistic in terms of improving learning situations for students. However, there are some ways to enhance student performance that at first sight do not seem to be very complicated but nevertheless are quite effective without depending on the former mentioned barriers too much. The purpose of this synthesis paper is to present recent findings concerning two of those strategies, cooperative learning and metacognitive instruction, and critically discussing their effectiveness and applicability as well as their limitations and implications for future research. First, a short overview is given on the problem of implementing new techniques in classroom instruction and changing teachers’ practices. This is done to provide a framework and consider the main constraints. Then, research on the two strategies is presented and discussed with regard to applicability and limitations. The main indicator of whether those strategies actually reach the student or not is student achievement as usual, even though it is certainly not the only important one and some other indicators are considered. Finally, a short summary and conclusion is given and implications for future research are considered.

Download or read book Making the Grade written by Martin V. Covington and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1992-04-24 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Achievement behaviour in schools can best be understood in terms of attempts by students to maintain a positive self-image. For many students, trying hard is frightening because a combination of effort and failure implies low ability, which is often equated with worthlessness. Thus many students described as unmotivated are in actuality highly motivated - not to learn, but to avoid failure. Students have a variety of techniques for avoiding failure, ranging from cheating to setting low goals which are easily achieved. In Making the Grade, Martin Covington extracts powerful educational implications from self-worth theory and other contemporary views of motivation that will be useful for everyone concerned with the educational dilemmas we face. He provides a comprehensive, insightful review of research and theory, both contemporary and historical, on the topic of achievement motivation, and arranges this knowledge in ways that lead to imminently practical recommendations for restructuring schools.
