Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Effects of Magnetic Fields on Magnetic Storage Media Used in Computers The nbs Center for Computer Sciences and Technology undertake research and advisory services aimed at improving the efficiency of data processing Operations in industry and Government. In recent years there has been concern for the protection against unwarranted erasure of important computer records that are maintained and stored on magnetic media. This study has been initiated by Dr. Ruth M. Davis in respons to the questions that were raised by the Office of Management and Budget in Section 3. The report investigates the effects on recorded media of magnetic fields that are produced by sources such as permanent magnets. Guidelines for protecting magnetic tape, disk and drum files by installation managers are suggested by Dr. Davis in Section 2. This book was released on 2011-08-28 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gives an introduction to nanostructured materials and guides the reader through their different engineering applications. It addresses the special phenomena and potentials involved in the applications without going into too much scientific detail of the physics and chemistry involved, which makes the reading interesting for beginners in the field. Materials for different applications in engineering are described, such as those used in opto-electronics, energy, tribology, bio-applications, catalysis, reinforcement and many more. In each application chapter, the reader will learn about the phenomena involved in the application, the nanostructured materials used in the field and their processing, besides finding some practical examples of their use in laboratories and in industry. The clear language and the application-oriented perspective of the book makes it suitable for both engineers and students who want to learn about applications of nanostructured materials in Engineering.

Book The Nanotech Pioneers

Download or read book The Nanotech Pioneers written by Steven A. Edwards and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-01-08 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hype, hope, or horror? A vivid look at nanotechnology, written by an insider and experienced science writer. The variety of new products and technologies that will spin out of nanoscience is limited only by the imagination of the scientists, engineers and entrepreneurs drawn to this new field. Steve Edwards concentrates on the reader's self interest: no military gadgets, wild fantasies of horror nanobot predators and other sci-fi stuff, but presents a realistic view of how this new field of technology will affect people in the near future. He is in close contact with many pioneers in nanotechnology, and includes their backgrounds to allow readers, especially college students considering a career in the field, to better imagine themselves in such positions. However, technology does not develop in a vacuum, and this book also looks at the social, political and economic changes attendant upon the development of nanotechnology. For the science-interested general public as well as chemists, students, lecturers, chemical organizations, materials scientists, journalists, politicians, industry, physicists, and biologists.

Book Quantum Mechanics with Applications to Nanotechnology and Information Science

Download or read book Quantum Mechanics with Applications to Nanotechnology and Information Science written by Yehuda B. Band and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-01-10 with total page 993 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quantum mechanics transcends and supplants classical mechanics at the atomic and subatomic levels. It provides the underlying framework for many subfields of physics, chemistry and materials science, including condensed matter physics, atomic physics, molecular physics, quantum chemistry, particle physics, and nuclear physics. It is the only way we can understand the structure of materials, from the semiconductors in our computers to the metal in our automobiles. It is also the scaffolding supporting much of nanoscience and nanotechnology. The purpose of this book is to present the fundamentals of quantum theory within a modern perspective, with emphasis on applications to nanoscience and nanotechnology, and information-technology. As the frontiers of science have advanced, the sort of curriculum adequate for students in the sciences and engineering twenty years ago is no longer satisfactory today. Hence, the emphasis on new topics that are not included in older reference texts, such as quantum information theory, decoherence and dissipation, and on applications to nanotechnology, including quantum dots, wires and wells. This book provides a novel approach to Quantum Mechanics whilst also giving readers the requisite background and training for the scientists and engineers of the 21st Century who need to come to grips with quantum phenomena The fundamentals of quantum theory are provided within a modern perspective, with emphasis on applications to nanoscience and nanotechnology, and information-technology Older books on quantum mechanics do not contain the amalgam of ideas, concepts and tools necessary to prepare engineers and scientists to deal with the new facets of quantum mechanics and their application to quantum information science and nanotechnology As the frontiers of science have advanced, the sort of curriculum adequate for students in the sciences and engineering twenty years ago is no longer satisfactory today There are many excellent quantum mechanics books available, but none have the emphasis on nanotechnology and quantum information science that this book has
