This book was released on 2006 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether fourth-grade students’ attitude improved when the Literature Circle roles were used with basal reading stories. The significance of this study was to analyze the attitude toward reading of the experimental group and the control group. The students in the Literature Circle group did not show improvement in their attitude toward reading. Therefore, the null hypothesis was not rejected.

Book A Comparison of Student Reading Comprehension Literature Circles and Basal Readers

Download or read book A Comparison of Student Reading Comprehension Literature Circles and Basal Readers written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author's abstract: "The purpose of this study was to determine if using books with literature circles as a supplement to the basal eader would affect children's reading comprehension. The researcher conducted this study over a period of six weeks. Comprehension tests were given at the beginning and the end of the study. A two-sample, one-tail t test for independent samples was used to compare gain scores on pretests given to the experimental group and the control group. A second t test was used to compare the post-test results and gain scores of comprehension in the experimental group and the control group. Analysis of the data showed a positive difference in the mean gain scores made in reading comprehension by students using literature circles as a supplement to the basal reader versus students using solely the basal reader. The researcher however did not reject the null hypothesis for this study, as the difference was not significant."

Book The Effects of Literature Circles on the Reading Achievement of College Reading Students

Download or read book The Effects of Literature Circles on the Reading Achievement of College Reading Students written by Davonna M. Thomas and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of literature circles on the reading achievement of college reading students using a mixed method approach. A literature circle is defined in this study as students who form a group, read a novel, and meet on a regular basis to discuss what they have read. The researcher-developed intervention included three activities: collaborative oral re-tell, short written response to a prompt, and open discussion. The study employed an experimental design in order to examine the effectiveness of the intervention (literature circles); in addition, the sociocultural context of the college reading classes (and students) is described in detail. Grounded theory was employed to analyze reading attitude, reading motivation, response to participation in a literature circle, and textual engagement. Thirty-eight college students in required reading courses participated in the five-week study. Students were randomly assigned to either the treatment (participation in literature circle) or control (independent reading) condition. Students were able to choose from four pre-selected high-interest young adult novels. At the conclusion of the series of literature circle meetings (or upon completion of reading the novel independently, for control group participants), comprehension was measured using three measures: an oral re-tell of the novel, a twenty question researcher-developed open-ended book-specific assessment, and a twenty question assessment on a two-part high school level passage from the Qualitative Reading Inventory (Leslie & Caldwell, 2011). Textual engagement was measured by coding and counting responses to a semi-structured interview. Multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) revealed a significant main effect for group assignment, meaning that—when all four measures were combined into a linear function—the students assigned to literature circles outperformed the control group students. Given the significance of the overall test, the univariate main effects were examined. Significant univariate main effects were obtained for the researcher developed test and textual engagement. Qualitative analysis revealed that literature circles improve reading comprehension, depth of textual engagement, and provides an opportunity for discourse, collaboration, and social interaction for its participants. These findings suggest that literature circles lead to both improved comprehension and deeper textual engagement for college reading students. Keywords: literature circles/book club/literature discussion, reading comprehension, textual engagement, reader response, post-secondary/college/university, developmental studies, mixed method; experimental design; grounded theory.

Book The Effects of Literature Circles on the Reading Comprehension of Fourth Grade English Language Learners

Download or read book The Effects of Literature Circles on the Reading Comprehension of Fourth Grade English Language Learners written by Carmen P. Vega and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study focuses on the effects of literature circles on reading comprehension of English Language Learners reading in English. 21 fourth grade English Language Learners in a Structured English Immersion class participated in an II-week study using literature circles. Participants were assessed using two different reading assessments before and after the study. In addition, English Language Development levels were assessed in listening, speaking, and reading. Participants were placed into literature groups reflecting instructional reading levels and English Language Development levels. Reader response journals and researcher observations offered additional information about the thinking process of the participants. A participant questionnaire highlighted the perceptions of the participants as readers as well as offered ideas for improving literature circle groupings. Keywords: English Language Learner, literature circles, reader response journal, instructional reading level, English language development level.

Book Effects of Literature Response Groups with Literature Response Journals on Reading Comphrehension

Download or read book Effects of Literature Response Groups with Literature Response Journals on Reading Comphrehension written by Melanie K. Irvine and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigated the effects of literature response groups with literature response journals on reading comprehension in third grade. The primary research question was; will students who are instructed using real literature, responding to the literature by using their own thinking, and discussing with a small group be successful in comprehending on district mandated assessments? Can teachers use real reading to teach the standards expected to be taught and still be successful on basal reading series assessments? The students were assessed in September with the Integrated Theme Assessment from the Houghton Mifflin textbook company and then again in November with the same assessment as in September. The post-test was given after each student participated in literature response groups while reading authentic children's literature and then responding in literature response journals. To analyze the data, I took notes during the literature discussion groups, collected the literature response journals, analyzed the different types of literature responses, and compared the pre-test scores with the post-test scores. As a class, the students had a 16.5% growth from the pre-test assessment in September to the post-test in November. The results made it clear that each individual student is an individual reader and different methods and strategies facilitate comprehension. The more variety of reading strategies taught and expected to be used, the more opportunities for success.

Book Creating Real world Readers

Download or read book Creating Real world Readers written by DeJanee Gregory and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study addresses the topic of literature circles in an elementary classroom and their implications on students’ attitudes toward reading and their self-perceptions as readers. The author was a preservice teacher placed in a yearlong clinical teaching internship in a third-grade English Language Arts departmentalized classroom. The goal of the study was to implement literature circles in hopes to better understand students’ attitudes and self-perceptions as readers. For this study, the author collected data in the form of student interviews, survey data, a personal reflective journal, observations, and students’ reflections. Utilizing the constant comparative method, the author analyzed data for major themes which resulted in the following: autonomy, student engagement, and readers reading. The author found that her students were doing real reading that resulted in an increase in student independence and autonomy, increased student engagement, and dramatic improvements in students’ self-perceptions.
