Book Physiologic Anchorage Control

Download or read book Physiologic Anchorage Control written by Tian Min Xu and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive introduction to physiologic anchorage control, explains the implications for clinical practice, and presents an anchorage technique applicable for the treatment of different malocclusions. The concept of physiologic anchorage control is derived from observations of upper molar movement during growth in adolescence, including in the absence of orthodontic treatment, which indicate that molar forward displacement comprises two components: the first due to biologic force or physiologic anchorage loss and the second due to orthodontic force or mechanical anchorage loss. All previous anchorage methods have been based on the assumption that molar anchorage loss is to be attributed solely to the mechanical force used to retract anterior teeth, and the new concept represents a paradigm shift of clinical significance. This book explores the pattern of upper molar growth in depth, highlights the physiologic significance of the curve of Spee, and analyzes the biomechanics of physiologic anchorage control. An anchorage control system that fully takes into account the latest conceptual insights is described and its clinical use and utility, examined.

Book Temporary Skeletal Anchorage Devices

Download or read book Temporary Skeletal Anchorage Devices written by Ki Beom Kim and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-07-11 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anchorage control is one of the most challenging tasks in orthodontic treatment. Many different types of appliance are used to control anchorage, but an excellent outcome may be difficult to achieve owing to either poor mechanics or inadequate patient compliance. Recently, temporary skeletal anchorage devices (TSADs) have become popular in orthodontics. Some orthodontic movements that are now possible using TSADs were previously considered almost impossible with traditional orthodontic appliances. Several different types of TSAD are currently available, and in choosing between them orthodontists are obliged to rely on the information provided by manufacturers, which is often not based on scientific evidence. This book therefore presents the various design characteristics of TSADs and provides up-to-date scientific evidence to assist orthodontists in selecting the best TSADs for their patients.

Book EFFECTS OF A LINGUAL ARCH AS MAXIMUM ANCHORAGE IN ORTHODONTICS

Download or read book EFFECTS OF A LINGUAL ARCH AS MAXIMUM ANCHORAGE IN ORTHODONTICS written by James Cavalancia and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 63 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lingual arches are frequently used in orthodontic extraction treatment, with the intended purpose of achieving maximum anchorage in the mandibular arch; however, little evidence exists in the literature that supports this anchorage approach. The lingual arch is widely supported in the literature for space maintenance and sagittal correction. It has been proven effective at minimizing any decreases in arch depth and perimeter when there is early loss of primary teeth. Theoretically, the lingual arch as a passive maintenance appliance should exert no forces on the teeth, yet studies have shown both the molars and incisors to move. To examine its anchorage efficiency further, we compared incisor and molar position in extraction treatment with and without the use of a lingual arch. Pre and post-treatment cephalograms that included lower premolar extractions were recruited from a depository of images. Canine retraction with power chain or NiTi closing coils with or without the use of a lingual arch for maximum anchorage were compared for incisor and molar position. Angular and millimetric measurements for IMPA, L1-NB, L1-APog and molar mesialization were measured and compared using a t-test. The greatest difference between pre and post-treatment was the IMPA with 5.19° more uprighting of the incisors in the group with no lingual arch, followed by 4.38° more uprighting in the L1-APog measurement. However, none of the differences between the groups were significant: IMPA (p=0.129), L1-NB (angular p=0.161, millimetric p=0.205), L1-APog (angular p=0.197, millimetric p=0.196) and mesialization of the molar (p=0.308). The change in incisor and molar position does not significantly differ with or without the use of a lingual arch in extraction treatment. Clinically, this suggests that the lingual arch does not provide maximum anchorage. Another modality, such as TADs, may provide a better source of anchorage for space closure.
