Book The Effects of Using Writing on a Student Learning in a Seventh Grade Math Classroom

Download or read book The Effects of Using Writing on a Student Learning in a Seventh Grade Math Classroom written by Amy L. Davis and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In my mathematics teaching experiences, I have found students encountering difficulties in successfully remembering and demonstrating all of the major concepts they have learned during the school year. Whether or not the students actually learn and remember the content is a problem numerous teachers experience. As a result, I decided to implement writing into a lower-level seventh grade math classroom to determine if writing would affect student learning. The study was implemented with sixteen lower-level seventh grade math students during the first ten weeks of the 2008-2009 school year at Northwest Junior High in the Iowa City Community School District. Pre-surveys and post-surveys were given to students to determine their attitudes toward mathematics and writing. A pretest and posttest was also administered to assess the effects writing ad on students' growth and achievement over the en week study. Students used their writing skills to explain their reasoning behind their answers. Students also wrote in a journal an average of two times per week. Results from the study showed a minimal increase in the number of students having a positive attitude towards math along with a minimal increase in student achievement. These results may be due to implementation of writing in the mathematics curriculum.

Book The Effects of Using Writing in the Math Classroom on Student Achievement in Math

Download or read book The Effects of Using Writing in the Math Classroom on Student Achievement in Math written by Dawn E. Digmann and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 77 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The demands of local, state, and national mandates on the classroom teacher became overwhelming to me. I decided that it must be possible to work towards several goals without doing several tasks. As a result, I implemented writing would affect student achievement. The study was implemented with 22 pre-calculus students during the first nine-week term of 2007-2008 school year at Benton Community Schools. Existing student attitudes towards math were assessed with a survey at the beginning of the study and reassessed at the conclusion of the study. A pretest of pre-calculus concepts was given at the beginning and at the conclusion of the study. Questions were split between skill-based questions, which required a numeric response, and conceptual-based questions, which required a numeric response, and conceptual-based questions, which required a written explanation. Students also wrote in a journal an average of two times per week. Two formal writing assignments were also given throughout the nine-week study. Results showed an increase in the number of students showing a positive attitude towards math along with an increase in student achievement. These results may be due to the implementation of writing in the mathematic curriculum.

Book The Factors Effecting Student Achievement

Download or read book The Factors Effecting Student Achievement written by Engin Karadağ and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-05-14 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the effect of psychological, social and demographic variables on student achievement and summarizes the current research findings in the field. It addresses the need for inclusive and interpretive studies in the field in order to interpret student achievement literature and suggests new pathways for further studies. Appropriately, a meta-analysis approach is used by the contributors to show the big picture to the researchers by analyzing and combining the findings from different independent studies. In particular, the authors compile various studies examining the relationship between student achievement and 21 psychological, social and demographic variables separately. The philosophy behind this book is to direct future research and practices rather than addressing the limits of current studies.

Book The Effects of Journaling on Student Writing Achievement

Download or read book The Effects of Journaling on Student Writing Achievement written by Jessica Dirks and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine if journal writing would affect student writing achievement and attitudes. This study was conducted at the start of the 2007-2008 school year at Excelsior Middle School, part of the Linn-Mar Community School District. Twenty-one eighth grade language arts students participated in this study. Data were collected from pre and post writing assessments, pre and post student surveys, and various writing assignments throughout the first ten weeks of the school year. Results of this study suggest overall improvement in writing fluency, accuracy, and student attitudes. These results are possibly due to journal writing practice.

Book The Impact Journal Writing Has on Achievement in Mathematics

Download or read book The Impact Journal Writing Has on Achievement in Mathematics written by Dianne Susan Patterson and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research focused on the impact journal writing had on achievement in mathematics. It was designed to determine if instructed based and writing in journals would improve achievement in mathematics. The subjects under investigation were 77 third graders enrolled in a rural elementary school in southeastern Ohio. One of the four classrooms in which the study was conducted was a self-contained classroom. The other three classrooms were departmentalized Mathematics classrooms. To measure gains in achievement in mathematics a pretest, posttest, and nonequivalent control group test was administered. An independent sample t-test of difference of means was used in this pretest, posttest, nonequivalent control group design. Results were obtained using the Crunch Statistical Package. It was concluded in the statistical analysis that instructed based and journal writing did not improve achievement in mathematics. Given a larger period of time, statistical information may have shown some gains for students who respond to instructed based and journal writing.
